Book Synopsis Tender Head by : April Rivers Eberhardt
Download or read book Tender Head written by April Rivers Eberhardt and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-01-31 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term “tender-headed” is a colloquialism used in the African-American community. Caring for ethnic hair is a unique and interesting process that brings forth a lot of debate and conversation. We share many familiar experiences and expressions. For instance, when the term “kitchen” is used in reference to doing African-American hair, we who have endured the hair styling routines of our heritage may remember that word being used to describe the thick hair at the nape of the neck. One thing is for sure, “tender-headed-ness” is one of those things that is common ground for many multi-cultural people. What's even more fascinating is that a multitude of brown girls like the characters in this book can share in this experience of getting their tangles untangled, under the skillful and quick fingers of their mothers, grandmothers or aunties, who have probably also gone through this same process themselves, when they were once little brown girls too. For many multi-cultural girls and boys, being “tender-headed” is a cultural trait and getting those tangles untangled is an often times uncomfortable but bearable rite of passage that many of us have gone through. Because of its unique texture, there are some challenges to getting their hair styled. It isn't always pleasant, but it certainly is memorable.
Book Synopsis Tender Headed by : Olatunde Osinaike
Download or read book Tender Headed written by Olatunde Osinaike and published by Akashic Books. This book was released on 2023-12-05 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tender Headed, selected by Camille Rankine as a winner of the 2022 National Poetry Series, is a musical and formally playful meditation on Black identity and masculinity "In this dynamic debut collection, Nigerian American poet Osinaike unpacks ideas of masculinity with playful musicality . . . Acutely attuned to poetic lineage, Osinaike cites established poets Yona Harvey, Ladan Osman, and Morgan Parker, setting a context for his own new and versatile voice." —Booklist The irony of transformation often is that we mistake it to have occurred long before it does. Tender Headed takes its time in asserting the realization that growth remains ever ahead of you. Examining the themes of Black identity, accountability, and narration, we encounter a series of revealing snapshots into the role language plays in chiseling possibility and its rigid command of depiction. Olatunde Osinaike's startling debut sorts through the many-minded masks behind Black masculinity. At its center lies an inquiry about the puzzling nature of relationships, how ceaseless wonder can be in its challenge of a truth. In the name of music and self-identity, the speaker weaves their way through fault and how it amends Black life in America. This is demonstrated best in how the demanding, yet vulnerable tone for the collection is set in "Men Like Me," its restless opening poem. Here, we find the speaker reciting a chronicle of generational neglect from men that became him also. Earnest and sharp, there is a beauty in seeing a poet not shy away from both the melancholy and resolve of rescripting their path while cherishing their steps and missteps along the way. This collection is a panel aching of fathers, sons, uncles, grandfathers, all of whom would do well to join in and confront shared privileges that are typically curtailed or altogether avoided in conversation. Tender Headed entrusts the heart to be a compass, insisting on a journey unto itself and a melodic detour toward tenderness precise with its own footing.

Book Synopsis Pathophysiology of Headaches by : Messoud Ashina
Download or read book Pathophysiology of Headaches written by Messoud Ashina and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed overview of the current state of knowledge regarding the pathophysiology of both primary headaches – migraine, tension-type headache (TTH), and cluster headache – and the very important and frequent type of secondary headache, medication overuse headache (MOH). After an introductory chapter describing relevant neuroanatomy and vascular anatomy, the evidence gained from animal models regarding the pathophysiology of migraine and the other primary headaches is reviewed. Knowledge of the genetic component in the different types of headache is then examined with reference to recent evidence, for example regarding the implication of the trigeminovascular system and cortical spreading depression in migraine. Detailed information is provided on insights into primary headaches from imaging studies, including functional magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography and on their neurophysiology and biochemistry. A further series of important chapters describe present knowledge of the pathophysiology of each specific type of headache and consider future directions. Written by acknowledged experts in their fields from Europe and the United States, clinicians and students will find Pathophysiology of Headaches to be an excellent source of up-to-date information on why patients experience headaches. In addition, it will be of value for pain researchers investigating the underlying mechanisms of headache.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ?The Tender Years? is my autobiography, a true and honest account of my life from birth to the present day. It takes in what for many, are taboo subjects: - childhood sexual abuse, self-harm in various measures, and psychiatric care today ? as we leave the 20th Century. My own psychiatric care takes in the hub of ?the System?, the receiving end of in-patient and out-patient or ?client? services ? which is still much in need of improvement. I try to describe the many mistakes that may be made in this ?hit and miss? side of medicine. The book embraces a host of emotional feelings, captured in a format that adults should find inspirational to read. One of the key reasons for writing the book is that it hints of the physical as well as the emotional scars. Hopefully my later years will successively become less ?tender? from these. In offering a light at the end of the tunnel, if QT Saunders got through a tough life and is still standing ? anyone can ? and against all the odds.

Book excerpt: Working at the local processing plant, Marcos is in the business of slaughtering humans—though no one calls them that anymore. His wife has left him, his father is sinking into dementia, and Marcos tries not to think too hard about how he makes a living. After all, it happened so quickly. First, it was reported that an infectious virus has made all animal meat poisonous to humans. Then governments initiated the “Transition.” Now, eating human meat—“special meat”—is legal. Marcos tries to stick to numbers, consignments, processing. Then one day he’s given a gift: a live specimen of the finest quality. Though he’s aware that any form of personal contact is forbidden on pain of death, little by little he starts to treat her like a human being. And soon, he becomes tortured by what has been lost—and what might still be saved.
