Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is morally right and wrong differs from one individual to the next. From the big issues of abortion and sexual expression to the life choices of integrity, these differing opinions exist throughout human culture. Who is right and who is wrong? Is mankind fit to decide what is good and evilor is this decision too great a responsibility for us to handle? As the moral fabric of the individual, the family, the nation, and the world disintegrates, we are faced with the dilemma: Who really decides what is morally right and wrong? In The Knowledge of Good and Evil, Joshua K. Hildebrandt takes us back to the beginning to a man and a woman and a tree in a garden to discover how this question can be answered, and to show us the freedom that can be ours in laying down the right to choose!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of Jesus Christ takes on fresh clarity and meaning in this masterful work by Dwight Pentecost. The words, the miracles, and overarching message of the Messiah come alive in flowing and detailed chronology, set against the cultural, political, and religious setting of his day. You'll gain new understanding of why Jesus came, how he operated, and what he accomplished. Above all, you'll acquire a deeper appreciation for the love that guided his path, beginning in a manger in Bethlehem, leading through three and a half years of ministry that ended abruptly at the cross on Golgotha, and blazing forth in eternal triumph at the resurrection. Drawing liberally on the works of others who have written about Christ, such as Alfred Edersheim, J. W. Shepherd, W. Graham Scroggie, and Frederick Faraar, Dr. Pentecost reveals in his own writing a familiarity with the subject that comes from years of teaching. Yet he writes, not as one who knows all there is to know about Christ, but with the restraint of one who knows that Jesus is to be worshiped and adored as the great King, and that no book can do more than begin to tell all the wonders of his being and his love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite an increasing portion of our lives being conducted online, the topic of the internet is vastly underrepresented in the current literature on technology and theology. The HTML of Cruciform Love challenges outdated misconceptions about internet theology and asserts that there is no topic more pertinent to our daily walk as contemporary followers of Jesus Christ than the theological implications of the internet age. These twelve essays investigate the themes of community and character formation in the digital realm. A host of interrelated sub-themes are represented, including the application of patristic theology to contemporary internet praxis, a demonology of the internet, and virtue ethics in cyberspace, while other studies consider the influence of internet technology on aesthetics, personhood, and the self. Together, the essays work towards a collaborative, constructive, cruciform theology of the internet as something more than a supplementary component to our personal lives; rather, it is a vital medium for the digital communion of the saints through the HTML of cruciform love.

Book excerpt: R.S. Thomas's presentation of God has given rise to controversy and dissent. Exploring Thomas's techniques of creating his images of God, Elaine Shepherd addresses the problems surrounding the language of religion and of religious poetry. Refusing to limit herself to conventionally religious poems, and drawing on material from the earliest work to Counterpoint and beyond, she identifies the challenges with which Thomas confronts his readers. The sequence of close readings engages the reader in an exploration of language and image: from the image of woman as constructed by the Impressionist to the non-image of the mystical theologian.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study offers a theological response to the problem of anxiety from the point of view of Hans Urs von Balthasar. It is a systematic presentation, analysis and development of Balthasar's original theology of anxiety found in his only work on the subject, Der Christ und die Angst. The study takes a thematic approach based upon the four types of analysis found in Der Christ und die Angst: phenomenological, anthropological, theological and ecclesial. These four approaches to the topic correspond to the phenomenon, origins, redemption and transformation of anxiety. Through this thematic approach, Balthasar's thought is examined in relation to some of the important figures on anxiety. The phenomenon of anxiety is presented in relation to modern psychiatry. The examination of anxiety's origins places him in dialogue with Kierkegaard on anxiety from discursive reasoning and Freud on anxiety from ego-consciousness. The redemption of anxiety places Balthasar in relation to Aquinas in order to clarify Balthasar's interpretation and to show its significance in the theological tradition. The transformation of anxiety places our author in dialogue with Luther on the shape of anxiety in the Christian life. The final chapter begins to unravel the construct of anxiety, with a brief exploration of how it is transformed in the Church according to Balthasar, something he had never explicitly developed. The influence of Bernanos on Balthasar's thought is felt throughout the study. The entire study is framed by the two Gardens wherein transpire the most significant events concerning anxiety for Balthasar: the Garden of Eden and the Garden of Gethsemane.
