Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is part of a publication series emerging from an international interdisciplinary study group on "New Technologies and Work (NeTWork)". NeTWork is sponsored by the Werner-Reimers Foundation (Bad Homburg, Germany) and the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme (Paris). The NeTWork study group has set itself the task of intellectually penetrating various problem domains posed by the introduction and spread of new technologies in work settings. This problem focus requires interdisciplinary co-operation. The usual mode of operating is to identify an important problem within the NeTWork scope, to attempt to prestructure it and then to invite original contributions from European researchers or research teams actively involved in relevant analytic or developmental work. A specific workshop serves to cross-fertilize the different approaches and to help to integrate more fully the individual contributions. The concept of telematics refers to the integration of computer, telecommunication and information technologies. It alludes to the opportunities presented by the technical means to communicate and transfer data over large distances by "intelligent equipment". Teleshopping, teleconferencing, teleworking and telebanking are but a few examples of a development which influences both public and private environments. Both households and workplaces are likely to be thoroughly changed by telematics. This publication emphasises the application of telematics in working environments. The central questions of the book are: How will the present and future development of telematics effect the nature and organization of work, and under which conditions will this development be optimal? From the various contributions it is clear that telematics is not a single direct cause or determinant of particular changes in work and organization. The development and application of telematics depend on decision making of actors at a political scene both outside and inside the work organizations. The effects of the use of these applications appear to be co-determined by many other factors. In fact, the technology interacts with political, economic, and social factors in a complex process that shapes new organizational forms and work relationships.

Book excerpt: The field of telematics --- an integration of telecommunications and informatics --- is one of the new electronic technologies which merges communication and information processes by using computer networks, and is expanding rapidly. It is expected that developments in this field will have a strong impact on future transportation and locational decisions as well as on the behaviour of companies and individuals. This Proceedings volume contains the papers that were held during the First International Symposium ''Telematics --- Transportation and Spatial Development'', The Hague, 14--15 April 1988. The lectures held covered current and expected developments in telematics and the effects of applications of telematics on the economy, transportation and spatial planning. The main topics discussed were: -- Telematics as a new technology -- Telematics as substitute for physical transport -- Telematics as an optimization of existing transportation techniques and processes -- Telematics as a factor in spatial reorganization

Book excerpt: This book is the final result of a team effort involving a large number of international experts, coordinated and led by Dr. Marcelo Sosa-Iudicissa, in Brussels, Dr. Nora Oliveri, in Buenos Aires, Dr. Carlos A. Gamboa, in Washington, and Ms. Jean Roberts, in England. They have attracted and assembled together the contributions of 80 specialists from over 20 countries in North America, Europe and Latin America. This makes the present book a unique publication, presenting a true global vision of the opportunities opened up by the advent of the Internet for doctors, health professionals, planners and managers, as well as for patients and the public at large, wanting to know more and better about their own health maintenance and protection. It also presents a range of informatics and telematics applications available nowadays to medicine, examples on how people with a health concern are using the Internet in both industrialised and developing countries. This change, bringing empowerment through knowledge, is showing us the trend towards a New Health Paradigm in the In-formation Society. This book is aimed at medical practitioners, administrators, teachers and students who wish an authoritative state-of-the-art as well as how-to for commencing or enhancing wish done on the Internet. A self-contained CD-Rom is included with the book, providing readers with a flying start in accessing key information sounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the current state of discussion from different perspectives. It starts with the European view. Representatives of the CEC present the political strategies and objectives of the IV Framework Programme regarding education and training supported by technology and telematics. International experts join the discussion, specifying political, cultural, sociological, psychological and market factors which determine the success of the implementation of new learning environments. How should learning systems be developed and evaluated: this question is tackled in the following section. Specific project desciptions show how the involvement of different user groups has been achieved: home learners, small and medium-sized enterprises, large companies, secondary and tertiary education. The perspective then shifts to the different components of learning systems: the management of virtual space, the economical production of learning material, the use of simulation... A more technology-oriented section discussing questions of different technologies and standards concludes the publication.

Book excerpt: Spanning a hundred years (1910 – 2010) and three geographical locations – Europe, Japan and North America – this unique book examines the capacity of performance to recode reality. It argues for a seamless continuity between philosophy, critical theory and artistic practice. Each chapter ends with scores, providing readers with the opportunity to explore the discussed ideas in an embodied, and, where applicable, interactional way. The book's analysis of such landmark phenomena as the ready-made, action painting, intermedia, feminine writing, identity politics, cyborgian bio-art and ludic (h)activism make it an invaluable source for practical theorists, and undergraduate and Masters-level students of performance studies, performing arts, fine and visual arts and cultural studies.

Book excerpt: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Predictive and Analytical Rendering in Edge Computing focuses on the role of AI and machine learning as it impacts and works alongside Edge Computing. Sections cover the growing number of devices and applications in diversified domains of industry, including gaming, speech recognition, medical diagnostics, robotics and computer vision and how they are being driven by Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and distributed computing, may it be Cloud Computing or the evolving Fog and Edge Computing paradigms. Challenges covered include remote storage and computing, bandwidth overload due to transportation of data from End nodes to Cloud leading in latency issues, security issues in transporting sensitive medical and financial information across larger gaps in points of data generation and computing, as well as design features of Edge nodes to store and run AI/ML algorithms for effective rendering. Provides a reference handbook on the evolution of distributed systems, including Cloud, Fog and Edge Computing Integrates the various Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques for effective predictions at Edge rather than Cloud or remote Data Centers Provides insight into the features and constraints in Edge Computing and storage, including hardware constraints and the technological/architectural developments that shall overcome those constraints
