Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world seems to be getting smaller and business moving much faster. To be successful in this type of environment you need instantaneous access to any information, immediate responses to queries, and constant availability, on a worldwide basis, and in a world where the volume of data is growing exponentially. You need the best resources you can get, and ones that can satisfy those needs. IBM® can help. A primary component that can affect performance is access to disk-based data. And, as data volumes grow, so does the performance impact. To improve performance, it is time to look for technology enhancements that can mitigate that impact. IBM solidDB® is powerful relational, in-memory caching software that can accelerate traditional disk-based relational database servers by caching performance-critical data into one or more solidDB in-memory database instances. This capability can enable significant performance improvements. It brings data closer to the application so you can use a faster and more efficient data access paradigm. The result? Faster delivery of information for your queries to enable faster analysis and decision-making that can give you a significant business advantage. Have questions? Many of the answers you need are contained in this IBM Redbooks® publication.

Book excerpt: Telecommunications and the City provides the first critical and state-of-the-art review of the relations between telecommunications and all aspects of city development and management. Drawing on a range of theoretical approaches and a wide body of recent research, the book addresses key academic and policy debates about technological change and the future of cities with a fresh perspective. Through this approach, the complex and crucial transformations underway in cities in which telecommunications have central importance are mapped out and illustrated. Key areas where telecommunications impinge on the economic, social, physical, enviromental and institutional development of cities are illustrated by using boxed extracts and wide range of case study examples from Europe, Japan and North America. Rejecting the extremes of optimism and pessimism in current hype about cities and telecommunications, Telecommunications and the City offers a sophisticated new perspective through which city-telecommunications relations can be understood.

Book excerpt: This open access book constitutes the research workshops, doctoral symposium and panel summaries presented at the 20th International Conference on Agile Software Development, XP 2019, held in Montreal, QC, Canada, in May 2019. XP is the premier agile software development conference combining research and practice. It is a hybrid forum where agile researchers, academics, practitioners, thought leaders, coaches, and trainers get together to present and discuss their most recent innovations, research results, experiences, concerns, challenges, and trends. Following this history, for both researchers and seasoned practitioners XP 2019 provided an informal environment to network, share, and discover trends in Agile for the next 20 years. Research papers and talks submissions were invited for the three XP 2019 research workshops, namely, agile transformation, autonomous teams, and large scale agile. This book includes 15 related papers. In addition, a summary for each of the four panels at XP 2019 is included. The panels were on security and privacy; the impact of the agile manifesto on culture, education, and software practices; business agility – agile’s next frontier; and Agile – the next 20 years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just like the previous workshop at VLDB 1999 in Edinburgh, the purpose of this workshop is to promote telecom data management as one of the core research areas in database research and to establish a strong connection between the telecom and database research communities. As I wrote in the preface of those proceedings, data management in telecommuni- tions is an interesting area of research given the fact that both service management and service provisioning are very data intensive, and pose extreme requirements on data management technology. Given the feedback on the previous workshop we decided to keep the same program set-up for this workshop: an invited speaker, a collection of research papers, and a panel discussion. We received 18 good quality papers from which we selected 12 to construct a very interesting program. The program has been divided into four sections. The first section focuses on CDR data warehouse and data mining technology. Data warehousing and data mining around customer usage data remains an important area of interest for telecommunication operators. The growing competition, especially in the mobile market, means that operators have to put more effort into customer retention and satisfaction. The second section focuses on performance issues around databases in telecommunication. Since telecommunication databases are characterized by their extreme requirements, for example in terms of volumes of data to be processed or response times, high volume data management and embedded and real-time data management are key aspects of the telecommunication data management problems in today’s operational environments.

Book excerpt: Blockchain technology provided a buzz-seeking opportunity for all industries to implement improved corporate procedures and trust-building. Still, some industries, such as the banking sector, may view it as a disruptive technology that must be adopted. A transaction ledger’s contents can be verified, maintained, and synchronized by community members using blockchain technology. A transaction can never be changed or removed from the blockchain; updates may only be made by participants in the system. Its distributed database cannot be manipulated, disrupted, or hacked in the same manner as conventional, user-controlled access systems and centralized databases. Building Secure Business Models Through Blockchain Technology: Tactics, Methods, Limitations, and Performance studies and explores the status of blockchain technology and, through the latest technology, builds business models to secure the future direction in the field of business. This book discusses the tactics and methods, as well as their limitations and performance. Covering topics such as AI-based efficient models, digital technology and services, and financial trading, this premier reference source is a valuable resource for business leaders and managers, IT managers, students and educators of higher education, entrepreneurs, government officials, librarians, researchers, and academicians.

Joining the forces of the two events with The Open Group Conference provided the unique opportunity for an intensive exchange between practitioners as well as for discussions on standardization efforts and academic research in the areas of enterprise transformation and enterprise architecture (EA). Based on careful reviews by at least three Program Committee members, 18 papers were chosen for inclusion in these proceedings. They were presented in six sessions on enterprise architecture management (EAM) effectivity, languages for EA, EAM and the ability to change, advanced topics in EA, governing enterprise transformations, and EA applications.

Book excerpt: This book investigates the interplay of the recent transformation of working life and the growing appeal of political right-wing populism and extremism in Europe. It explores the individual and collective reactions and the strategies people develop in order to come to terms with socio-economic change. It raises the question of whether, and to what extent, changes in the employment system and in working life contribute to making people receptive to xenophobia, nationalism and racism. Based on an eight country study using both quantitative and qualitative research methods, this volume makes a significant contribution to the deeper understanding of the subjective reactions to socio-economic change and its political reverberations.
