Book excerpt: #1 Bestseller by Woodson James (True Crime). TRUE-LIFE story of notorious Mafia boss Johnny Toracio and his associate Carlo Juliano from the Salerno crime family in New York City.Orphaned and homeless in New York City at 14 years old, Carlo Juliano lived on the streets to survive until a local crime family boss, Johnny Toracio, gave him a job, a place to live, and a mentor for his new life as a gangster. For the next few years, Carlo flourished on the streets of New York befriending leaders of construction scams, art theft rings, drug cartels, biker gangs, extortion rackets, gambling, and cybercrime. "A lot of people talk about heaven and hell. I know where I'm going. I have a lot of friends down there, and I sent a lot of my enemies there too. They will all be waiting for me. You can put money on that."- Johnny ToracioSample from Book: Johnny told me a story about one of his associates, Lucky Charms.Johnny boasted, "Did you hear the story about how I got the club manager in line from Manhattan the other night when he disrespected Lucky? Lucky had a girlfriend who wanted to quit as a bartender in a joint that was connected to another family. She asked him to come with her when she told the manager she wanted to quit. When she tried to quit, the manager yelled at her, "You ain't going anywhere. Get back behind the bar." Lucky stood up for the girl and told the manager, "She's done working here, and that's it." The manager challenged Lucky, "Who the hell are you? Get out of here before I put a gun in your face."Lucky replied, "Look, you don't know who I am, and I don't know who you are. How about we handle this through our people? I'll go to my boss, and you can go to your boss. This will all get sorted out. I know Johnny from 101st avenue."The manager didn't believe Lucky knew me.He attempted to call Lucky's bluff by saying, "I don't care who you know, and I don't care about Johnny! I am not afraid of Johnny."Lucky told the manager, "Ok, no problem, I am going to leave."Lucky went straight to me. After he described what happened, I told Lucky to take me to see the manager. When we arrived, I walked in slowly wearing a long black overcoat. I knew he would recognize me immediately. The manager shrieked like a little girl, "Look, I had no idea! I thought your friend was bullshitting me! I am sorry! Please, I don't want any problems! I meant no disrespect!"In the back of the bar, I saw a door open with stairs behind it. I pointed to the door. and calmly told the manager, "We're going down to the basement."The manager walked in front of me. How scared was he? Who knows what he was thinking. He winced in pain when he nervously bumped into the doorway. When we arrived at the bottom of the stairs, I told him to turn around.I stared at him and he looked down on the ground. I pulled out my .357 revolver. His lip twitched.I ordered, "Get down on your knees." Then, I jammed my revolver in his mouth. His eyes developed a tearful gaze. His jaw shook uncontrollably. I declared, "I don't care who owns this place. I want $500 a week out of here. Do you understand?"That little girl wasted my time making me come out there to visit him. Now he had to pay.He couldn't go to anyone to protect him. He was fucked. I remember when a friend of mine used to rob banks, he looked at it as a regular job. He used to say, "There is no room for error in my work. If other people screw up at their legitimate jobs, then they get fired or reprimanded. If I screw up, I go to jail for over 10 years or I get shot. When I went into this, others told me the odds of getting away with robbing a bank my first time was 80%. I thought those odds were pretty good. I felt supercharged the first time I got away with it. I kept doing it - that was my demise. Eventually, the odds stacked up against me and I got caught."

So hard that due to Orlando tussling with a prison guard he was thrown in the RHU, better known as the hole, for a one year torture session with the guards. A torture session neither he nor anyone else who assaulted staff was supposed to, live through. It was at that time, that upon Orlando's death, he had an encounter with God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Florida has been the location and subject of hundreds of feature films, from Cocoanuts (1929) to Monster (2004). Portraying the state and its people from the silent era to the present, these films have explored the multitude of Florida images and cliches that have captured the public's imagination--a nature lover's paradise, a wildlife refuge, a tourist destination, home to the "cracker," and a haven for the retired, the rich, the immigrant, and the criminal. Sunshine in the Dark is the first complete study of how the movie industry has immortalized Florida’s extraordinary scenery, characters, and history on celluloid. Historians Fernández and Ingalls have identified more than 300 films about Florida--many of them shot on location in the state--to analyze how filmmakers from the Marx Brothers and John Huston to Oliver Stone and Francis Ford Coppola have portrayed the state and its people. Prior to the 1960s, cinematic trips to Florida usually brought happy endings in movies like Moon Over Miami (1942), but since the 1970s, films like Scarface (1982) have emphasized the state's menacing aspects. In the authors' analysis of the films, which examines location settings, plotlines, and characters, they find a bevy of Florida stereotypes among the leading characters--from the struggling crackers in The Yearling (1946) to the drug-addicted con man in Adaptation (2002). Featuring more than 100 still photographs from movies, as well as filmographies by year and genre, the book is an encyclopedic resource for movie fans and anyone interested in Florida popular culture.

Book excerpt: From Karen Gravano, a star of the hit VH1 reality show Mob Wives, comes a revealing memoir of a mafia childhood, where love and family come hand-in-hand with murder and betrayal. Karen Gravano is the daughter of Sammy "the Bull" Gravano, once one of the mafia's most feared hit men. With nineteen confessed murders, the former Gambino Crime Family underboss—and John Gotti's right-hand man—is the highest ranking gangster ever to turn State's evidence and testify against members of his high-profile crime family. But to Karen, Sammy Gravano was a sometimes elusive but always loving father figure. He was ever-present at the head of the dinner table. He made a living running a construction firm and several nightclubs. He stayed out late, and sometimes he didn't come home at all. He hosted "secret" meetings at their house, and had countless whispered conversations with "business associates." By the age of twelve, Karen knew he was a gangster. And as she grew up, while her peers worried about clothes and schoolwork, she was coming face-to-face with crime and murder. Gravano was nineteen years old when her father turned his back on the mob and cooperated with the Feds. The fabric of her family was ripped apart, and they were instantly rejected by the communities they grew up in. This is the story of a daughter's struggle to reconcile the image of her loving father with that of a murdering Mafioso, and how, in healing the rift between the two, she was able to forge a new life.

Book excerpt: The Anthem Handbook of Screen Theory offers a unique and progressive survey of screen theory and how it can be applied to a range of moving-image texts and sociocultural contexts. Focusing on the “handbook” angle, the book includes only original essays from established authors in the field and new scholars on the cutting edge of helping screen theory evolve for the twenty-first-century vistas of new media, social shifts and geopolitical change. This method guarantees a strong foundation and clarity for the canon of film theory, while also situating it as part of a larger genealogy of art theories and critical thought, and reveals the relevance and utility of film theories and concepts to a wide array of expressive practices and specified arguments. The Anthem Handbook of Screen Theory is at once inclusive, applicable and a chance for writers to innovate and really play with where they think the field is, can and should be heading.

True, the standard he abides by is somewhat different from traditional ethics, yet he is a man of principle. His uncompromising commitment is to omertá - the code of silence. He believes when you are involved in murder, arson, extortion, and other such crimes, you keep your mouth shut, no matter what. So living up to his beliefs, Valenti takes the rap for a murder he did not commit, and serves eighteen years in prison. When he gets out, using his professional skills, he takes care of the rat that framed him. Finally free, he tries being a law abiding citizen but he simply can't cut it. He's had very little training, indeed none, on the right side of the law. Thus, he returns to his roots, working for a powerful organized crime family led by the brutal boss of bosses. He performs well, getting excellent job performance reviews, but as in most jobs, office politics is killing him - so to speak - and he clashes with the boss. Given his skills as one of the best in the murder-for-hire business, he smells that he may be the target of the boss of bosses, but Valenti turns the table on him. With the help of a mole in a special U.S. federal crime fighting unit, he outwits the boss, and devises an ingenious plan that assures he can live with his true love in anonymity and peace. He disappears leaving no forwarding address.

Book excerpt: The Mob is notorious for its cruel and immoral practices, but its most successful members have always been extremely smart businessmen. Now, former mobster Louis Ferrante reveals its surprisingly effective management techniques and explains how to apply them-legally-to any legitimate business. As an associate of the Gambino family, Ferrante relied on his instincts to pull off some of the biggest heists in U.S. history. By the age of twenty-one, he had netted millions of dollars for his employers. His natural talent for management led Mafia bosses to rely on him. After being arrested and serving an eight-and-a-half-year prison sentence, Ferrante went straight. He realized that the Mob's most valuable business lessons would allow him to survive and thrive in the real world. Now he offers eighty-eight time-tested Mafia strategies, including: * Go get your own coffee!: Respecting the chain of command without being a sucker. * The walls have ears: Never bad-mouth the boss. * Is this phone tapped?: Watch what you say every day. * How to bury the hatchet-but not in someone's head. * Don't split yourself in half: The wrong decision is better than none at all. * Don't build Yankee stadium, just supply the concrete: Spotting new rackets. * Leave the gun, take the cannolis...and beware of hubris. Ferrante brings his real-life experiences to the book, offering fascinating advice that really works and sharing behind-the-scenes episodes almost as outrageous as those occurring on Wall Street every day.

This edition contains films ranging from the years 2013 through 2016, with some periodic “oldies but goodies” mixed in. Like Philip’s previous three books, On the Aisle, Volume 4 contains brief and to-the-point movie reviews that are geared toward the average moviegoer. It is not really written from a critic’s perspective, but from that of the average viewer. The reviews are simple and easy to understand. What is unique about the book is that it tells the synopsis of the film, then it gives the author’s opinion of the film, and then it lets the reader decide whether or not they would like to see the film. The films are rated on a scale of 1 through 5. There are also half-star ratings, such as 3 1⁄2 stars (VERY GOOD). The contained films are listed in alphabetical order, and for ease of reference, there is also a table of contents page. Enjoy... On the Aisle, Volume 4. Irreverent, hilarious and surprising, Wayne Rooney: Boots of Gold is a tarts-and-all biography of England's most famous sportsman and an exposé of the iniquities of some of those who have sought their pound of flesh from his celebrity. Short-tempered and sweary he may be, but there's no doubting Rooney's passion for the beautiful game. But who is the real Wayne Rooney? On the one hand there was the disastrous World Cup in 2010, sex scandals and the unedifying spectacle of his grotesque contract negotiations with Manchester United; on the other, unprecedented success as the best British footballer of his time. On form, he's an unstoppable force, and the jewel in the crown of one of the most powerful club sides in history. But then there's the infamous entourage: a controversial agent, a crooked lawyer, tarts and gangsters, all attracted to the fabulous money Rooney gets for kicking a pig's bladder around a field. Wayne Rooney: Boots of Gold charts the rise and fall - and rise and fall again - of football's most intriguing star.

Book excerpt: Lawman Eliot Ness has been transformed into legend by the films and television programs that depicted the war he and his "Untouchables" waged against Al Capone and the mobsters of Prohibition-era Chicago. Published by McFarland in 2000, the first edition of this volume analyzed both Ness the person and Ness the myth. This updated and expanded second edition is enhanced by information gathered through interviews with members of the original casts of the television and film versions of The Untouchables. Also included is new material on the historical Frank Nitti and "The Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run," along with several gangsters whom Ness never actually encountered except in his media portrayals, among them Mad Dog Coll and Dutch Schultz. The author concludes by evaluating the life and accomplishments of Eliot Ness, and his impact as a cultural icon.
