Book excerpt: The Cenozoic India-Asia collision generated the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalayan collisional system, the latter consisting of the convergence-perpendicular Himalayan orogen and the convergence-parallel Eastern and Western Flanking Belts located along the margins of India. Studying the evolution of each of these tectonic domains is critical to understanding the collision process and differentiating the end-member models of indenter-induced continental deformation. Despite this importance, there is a notable lack of geologic investigations on the development of the flanking belts in comparison to the extensive research of the Tibetan Plateau and east-trending Himalayan orogen. To address this problem, the research of this dissertation is focused on the Mesozoic-Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the northernmost segment of the Eastern Flanking Belt, the northern Indo-Burma Ranges, which are located directly east to southeast of the eastern Himalayan syntaxis. In the following chapters, I integrate the results of geologic field mapping, balanced cross section construction and restoration, U-Pb zircon geochronology, whole-rock geochemistry, thermobarometry, and (U-Th)/He zircon thermochronology to examine the litho-structural framework of the northern Indo-Burma Ranges and tectonic relationships in time and space with the adjacent eastern Himalayan orogen, the southern Tibetan Plateau, and the Eastern Flanking Belt. The research of this dissertation shows that the study area exposes a southwest- to west-directed Cenozoic thrust belt cored by a hinterland-dipping duplex system. Thrust faults sole into a northeast- to east-dipping di collement, which extends to >30 km depth. Southwestward forward propagation of the thrust belt in the foreland was coeval with out-of-sequence thrusting in the hinterland. This structural framework combined with the observed southward deflection in the trends of ductile stretching lineations within shear zones (northeast-trending in the north and east-trending in the south) suggest deformation around the eastern Himalayan syntaxis is best approximated by models of clockwise lithospheric flow accommodated by distributed thrusting. Major lithologic units involved in the northern Indo-Burma thrust belt from south to north include the easternmost continuations of the Tertiary Sub-Himalayan Sequence, Proterozoic-Cambrian Lesser Himalayan Sequence, and Indus-Yarlung suture zone of the Himalayan orogen and the Mesozoic northern Gangdese batholith belt and Mesoproterozoic basement of the Lhasa terrane. However, several Himalayan-Tibetan lithologic units are missing, including the Paleoproterozoic-Ordovician Greater Himalayan Crystalline Complex, Proterozoic-Eocene Tethyan Himalayan Sequence, Mesozoic-Cenozoic Xigaze forearc basin, and Cenozoic igneous rocks of the southern Gangdese batholith. Research suggests that these units were present in the study area at the onset of the Cenozoic India-Asia collision and their present-day absence is related to an eastward increase in post-collisional crustal shortening and continental underthrusting along the Himalayan collisional system. This interpretation is supported by a Cenozoic shortening strain estimate of ~81% (>156 km) across the northern Indo-Burma Ranges and a dramatic southward decrease in the width of the collisional system from ~200 km across the Himalayan orogen to ~5 km across the study area. Active deformation across the northern Indo-Burma Ranges and adjacent southeastern Tibetan Plateau is characterized by right-slip transpression partitioned between the range-bounding, oblique-slip Mishmi thrust in the southwest and right-slip Puqu and Parlung faults of Jiali fault zone in the northeast. The leading Mishmi thrust is kinematically-linked with the ~1000-km-long, right-slip Sagaing fault to the south via a previously-unmapped, southwest-trending restraining bend. This structural relationship of the Eastern Flanking Belt provides a key example of the spatial transition from transpressional deformation near the corner of an indenter to discrete right-slip motion along the side of an indenter during continental collision.

These include plate tectonic-scale processes such as plate subduction and the development of a volcanic arc, fold-thrust belt, and associated basins; the development of climatic gradients across the orogen; shallow-crustal structural partitioning of the basins into discrete depocenters; and the surficial (topographic) responses to such events. This dissertation examines the interplay of tectonic, sedimentary, and climatic processes during the evolution of two retroarc foreland basin systems: the Late Cretaceous-Eocene Magallanes-Austral basin of Patagonia (Chapters 2 and 3) and the Late Cretaceous-Oligocene Rocky Mountain foreland basin of southwestern Montana (Chapter 4). These chapters investigate a variety of geologic processes that occur at different temporal and spatial scales. Specifically, major goals of this dissertation include (1) generating a paleogeographic reconstruction of latest Cretaceous depositional environments in the Magallanes-Austral basin to better understand the termination of the long-lived deep-marine foreland basin (Chapter 2); (2) utilizing detrital zircon U-Pb ages to understand variations in sediment dispersal patterns and long-term average sedimentation rates during shoaling of the Magallanes-Austral basin (Chapter 3); and (3) integrating structural, stratigraphic, sediment provenance, and stable isotope ([delta] 18O, [delta] 13C) data to better understand the spatial and temporal relationships of tectonic activity and climate (Chapter 4). Data types and methods are diverse, and include detailed outcrop description, detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology, thin-section petrography, 1-D subsidence modelling, and stable isotope ([delta] 18O, [delta] 13C) stratigraphy from calcic paleosols.

The interplay of the Asian monsoon system and the tectonic evolution of the mountain belt make it an ideal laboratory to study interactions between tectonics, climate and erosion, and its implications on weathering and atmospheric CO2 drawdown. Lateral variations in exhumation rates have been observed and studies on paleoclimate have been conducted in the central and western Himalaya, but the onset, the evolution and the characteristics of the monsoonal climate are still debated. Paleo weathering rates and intensities are challenging to reconstruct and remain poorly studied, especially in the eastern part of the orogen.This thesis focuses on lateral variations in climate, weathering and vegetation along the Himalayan mountain range, on weathering regimes in the eastern Himalaya since Miocene times, and on the implications for the evolution of the Asian monsoon. The foreland basin sediments of the pre-Siwalik and Siwalik Groups contain a record of tectonics and paleoclimate. The approach focuses on a direct west-east comparison; we therefore sampled three previously dated sedimentary sections in the western Himalaya, namely the Joginder Nagar, Jawalamukhi and Haripur Kolar, which combine into a timespan of 20 Ma, and the Kameng river section in the east, which spans over the last 13 Ma.Stable carbon isotopes on organic matter are used to reconstruct changes in vegetation. Stable carbon isotopes show important lateral variations, with a change toward more positive values in the west at ~7 Ma and in contrast no change in the east, indicating a change in vegetation from C3 to C4 plant in the west but not in the east. These variations implicate a change towards a dryer and more seasonal climate in the western Himalaya, whereas the climate in the eastern part remained too humid for C4 plants to evolve, due to its proximity to moisture source (Bay of Bengal).In order to reconstruct paleo weathering regimes by analyzing foreland basin sediments, it is important to take into account changes in provenance and possible influences of burial diagenesis. Results of heavy-mineral and petrographic analyses of the Kameng section provide better insight into diagenesis and provenance, showing that the older part of the Kameng section is influenced by diagenesis. Changes in provenance do not correlate with changes in clay mineralogy and major elements, which are therefore indicating an overall increase in weathering over time, with a remarkable change at ~8 Ma.The compilation of the three sections in the west represent one of the longest sedimentary records in the Himalayas, spanning over 20 Ma. Clay minerals show similar trends in the west and the east, indicating the development of a more seasonal climate starting at ~8 Ma. Major elements show a trend toward stronger weathering over time in the west and the east, but the western Himalaya are generally more weathered than in the east, which is consistent with the interpretation of the stable carbon isotope data, suggesting the climate to be more humid in the east. More runoff and erosion inhibit extensive weathering of the sediments, whereas dry sea sons with little runoff allow sediments to weather.Lithium isotopic compositions were measured on bulk sediments as a new approach to reconstruct chemical weathering rates, applied for the first time on Siwalik sediments. Results show a change in weathering intensity in the west, where lithium isotopic values become more positive over time, whereas, they stay relatively constant in the east. More positive values in the west, suggest that the system becomes more weathering-limited and more incongruent.

Book excerpt: Direct constraints on processes associated with rifting and mantle exhumation are necessary to understand the thermal and structural evolution of continental rift systems, and the role of pre-existing crustal architecture on orogenesis and foreland basin development. This work constrains the Early Cretaceous hyperextension history along the Iberia-European margin and how rift inheritance affected the structural and foreland basin evolution of the Late Cretaceous-Oligocene Pyrenean orogeny. Chapters 1 and 2 aim to understand the thermal and structural evolution of the North Pyrenean basement massifs during Early Cretaceous rifting and hyperextension using multi-mineral thermochronometry. These chapters integrate zircon, apatite, and rutile U‐Pb ages from the Agly and Saint Barthélémy massifs that provide new constraints to understand the decoupled versus coupled extensional evolution, exhumation timing of the middle‐lower crust, and the age of juxtaposition of the upper crust granitic pluton with middle crustal gneisses, and fluid-rock interactions along a detachment fault. Novel method integration and approaches using apatite were developed and implemented in these chapters to best interpret the apatite U-Pb ages to gain the most insight into thermal, structural, and fault zone processes in the Early Cretaceous rift system’s distal margin. Chapters 3 and 4 use the sedimentary record in the pro-wedge foreland basins of inversion and orogenesis to understand the provenance, hinterland evolution, and the role of extensional inheritance on the orogenic phase of the margin. This work shows that the eastern Pyrenean foreland basin deposits were sourced from Corsica-Sardinia and the Catalan Coastal Ranges during the Late Cretaceous-Paleocene, and the Pyrenees beginning in the Eocene. Detrital mineral trends across the basins suggest that the pro-wedge foreland basin developed and remained segmented throughout the Late Cretaceous-Oligocene. The results from these chapters highlight the dominant control of inherited structures and rift basins on controlling the sediment provenance and foreland basin architecture in inverted rift systems. The dissertation aims to show the structural evolution of the Early Cretaceous rifting and thermal and structural processes that were operating within the continental crust at the rift margin, and how this inherited rift architecture affected the orogenic evolution and foreland basin development during the Pyrenean orogeny. These results add to our overall understanding of the structural and thermal evolution during rifting and continental break-up and role of rift inheritance in the evolution of superimposed orogenic systems and their associated foreland basins
