Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most Third World nations, importing technology from other countries is considered vital to industrialization and economic development. This book examines the processes of technology transfer and development by tracing how Hindustan Machine Tools—a public enterprise in India—successfully collaborated with manufacturers from industrialized nations in its growth from a single factory to a diversified industrial complex. The author critically analyzes the company's overall strategies for diversification and expansion and its approaches to selecting, acquiring, absorbing, and generating technology and to developing appropriate management. He also points to important relationships between “policy efficiency” and “administrative efficiency” and discusses socioeconomic and cultural factors that can obstruct the successful development and operation of an industrial enterprise in a developing country.

Book excerpt: As part of its contribution to the 1979 United Nations Conference on Science and Technology for Development IUNCSTD) the United Nations Institute for Training and Research jUNITAR) organized an informal research group to assess various aspects of applying science and technology to development through the United Nations system. This research group was constituted in early 1978 at the initiative of Dr. Robert S. Jordan, former Director of Research at UNITAR, and was headed by Professor Volker Rittberger, a UNITAR Special Fellow. One of the activities of this group has been the production of a series of working papers on science and technology. These papers seek to provide preliminary analyses rather than definitive conclusions. Their purpose is to facilitate the access of others to the ongoing work of the group and to stimulate critical comments and reactions leading to further improvement of this work.

This provides a framework of analysis for the modern bioprocessing industry in Mexico. The necessity to go beyond mastery of imported technologies for these industries is discussed. More generally, the absence of core-scientific capabilities at the firm-level and other country-specific factors deter the potential for developing countries to catch-up in biotechnology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The philosophical study of technology has acquired only recently a voice in academic conversation. This situation is due, in part, to the fact that technology obviously impacts on "the real world," whereas the favored stereotype of philosophy allegedly does not. Furthermore, in some circles it was assumed that philosophy ought not impinge on the world. This bias continues today in the form of a general dismissal of the growing area now referred to as "applied philosophy". By contrast, the academic scrutiny of science has for the most part been accepted as legitimate for some 30 years, primarily because it has been conducted in a somewhat ethereal manner. This is, in part, because it was believed that, science being pure, one could think (even philosophically) about science without jeopardizing one's intellectual purity. Since World War II, however, practitioners of the metascientific arts have come to ac knowledge that science also shows signs of having touched down on numerous occasions in what can only be identified as the real world. No longer able to keep this banal truth a secret, purists have sought to defuse its import by stressing the difference between pure and applied science; and, lest science be tainted by contact with the world through its applications, they have devoted additional energy to separating applied science somehow from technology.
