Book Synopsis The Traditional Chinese Iron Industry and Its Modern Fate by : Donald B. Wagner
Download or read book The Traditional Chinese Iron Industry and Its Modern Fate written by Donald B. Wagner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the economic history of the traditional Chinese iron industry in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with particular emphasis on the interactions among technological, economic and geographic factors. The traditional technology of iron production is described together with the ways in which it changed and developed in response to upheavals wrought by foreign competition, war and revolution and by the growth in China of a modern iron industry. Many of the book's findings are counter-intuitive, and will provide food for thought in the study of Third World industrial development. The author has written widely on the history of science and technology in China, and is currently engaged in writing the volume on ferrous metallurgy for Joseph Needham's Science and Civilisation in China.
Book Synopsis China's Technological Catch-Up Strategy by : Michael T. Rock
Download or read book China's Technological Catch-Up Strategy written by Michael T. Rock and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-09 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to 1979, China had a bifurcated and geographically-dispersed industrial structure made up of a relatively small number of large-scale, state-owned enterprises in various industries alongside numerous small-scale, energy-intensive and polluting enterprises. Economic reforms beginning in 1979 led to the rapid expansion of these small-scale manufacturing enterprises in numerous energy-intensive industries such as aluminum, cement, iron and steel, and pulp and paper. Subsequently, the government adopted a new industrial development strategy labeled "grasp the large, let go the small." The aims of this new policy were to close many of the unprofitable, small-scale manufacturing plants in these (and other) industries, create a small number of large enterprises that could compete with OECD multinationals, entice these larger enterprises to engage in high-speed technological catch-up, and save energy. China's Technological Catch-Up Strategy traces the impact of this new industrial development strategy on technological catch-up, energy use, and CO2 emissions. In doing so, the authors explore several detailed, enterprise-level case studies of technological catch-up; develop industry-wide estimates of energy and CO2 savings from specific catch-up interventions; and present detailed econometric work on the determinants of energy intensity. The authors conclude that China's strategy has contributred to substantial energy and CO2 savings, but it has not led to either a peaking of or a decline in CO2 emissions in these industries. More work is needed to cap and reduce China's CO2 emissions.
Book Synopsis Technological Innovation and International Competitiveness for Business Growth by : João J. M. Ferreira
Download or read book Technological Innovation and International Competitiveness for Business Growth written by João J. M. Ferreira and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-22 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how companies combine technological innovation and competitive actions that create new opportunities for business growth in the international market. The complexity of designing today’s technology platforms requires profound knowledge in multiple areas. Technology development and commercialization as an ongoing competitive process involves enabling and inhibiting mechanisms, which govern the speed and acceleration of technological innovation. To compete more effectively, potential competitors are using coopetition and pooling their resources for shared gain in areas where they do not compete directly. Thus, a thorough examination of the current paradigms, theories, and frameworks is needed to increase our understanding of the technology-innovation-competitiveness linkages of business growth. This book brings together recent developments and methodological contributions within technological innovation, international competitiveness, and business growth that bridge the existing gaps and simultaneously advances the debate on this research topic.

Book Synopsis Industrial Reform in China by : Keijiro Otsuka
Download or read book Industrial Reform in China written by Keijiro Otsuka and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial Reform in China is the first major attempt to explore the success of China's economic reform using studies of specific industries: the clothing, machine tool, and iron and steel industries, supplemented by analysis of official statistics. Particular emphasis is placed on thecomparison of management and production efficiency between township-village enterprises (TVEs) and state-owned enterprises (SOEs). The authors discover that the efficiency of TVEs has been enhanced by the transfer of technology, know-how, and marketing capacity from SOEs. In contrast, reform ofstate enterprises was found to have had limited impact. Given the enormous differences in efficiency between private and public ownership, it is clear that TVEs will continue to overwhelm SOEs, a process which will in time transform the Chinese economy into a true market-based system.
