Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artists and filmmakers in the early twentieth century reshaped our vision of the American West. In particular, the Taos Society of Artists and the California-based artist Maynard Dixon departed from the legendary depiction of the “Wild West” and fostered new images, or brands, for western art. This volume, illustrated with more than 150 images, examines select paintings and films to demonstrate how these artists both enhanced and contradicted earlier representations of the West. Prior to this period, American art tended to portray the West as a wild frontier with untamed lands and peoples. Renowned artists such as Henry Farny and Frederic Remington set their work in the past, invoking an environment immersed in conflict and violence. This trademark perspective began to change, however, when artists enamored with the Southwest stamped a new imprint on their paintings. The contributors to this volume illuminate the complex ways in which early-twentieth-century artists, as well as filmmakers, evoked a southwestern environment not just suspended in time but also permanent rather than transient. Yet, as the authors also reveal, these artists were not entirely immune to the siren call of the vanishing West, and their portrayal of peaceful yet “exotic” Native Americans was an expansion rather than a dismissal of earlier tropes. Both brands cast a romantic spell on the West, and both have been seared into public consciousness. Branding the American West is published in association with the Brigham Young University Museum of Art, Provo, Utah, and the Stark Museum of Art, Orange, Texas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This encyclopedia is a biographical dictionary of some 1,000 women artists of the American West. The product of a twenty-year, coast-to-coast research project by authors Phil Kovinick and Marian Yoshiki-Kovinick, it offers accurate, concise introductions to women painters, graphic artists, and sculptors, all of whom achieved recognition as depictors of Western subjects between the 1840s and 1980. Their styles range from representationalism to early modernism, while their works depict everything from bold landscapes and scenes of intensive action to studies of Native Americans, pioneers, ranchers, farmers, wildlife, and flora. Each entry in the encyclopedia features the salient facts of the artist's life and career, with attention to her work with Western subject matter. Many of the entries also contain a selected list of the artist's exhibitions, current locations of her work in public collections, pertinent references, and a black-and-white example of her work. An overview of the history of women in western art complements the biographical entries.

Book excerpt: - Presents a selection of works in the Petrie Institute of Western American Art collectionThis volume collects a selection of works of art produced in the western United States belonging to the collection of the Petrie Institute of Western American Art housed in the Denver Art Museum. This collection is one of the richest and most substantial in the world on this subject, thanks to its outstanding bronze sculptures, early modern works, and contributions from the artistic communities of Taos and Santa Fe. The central theme of the book is the period stretching from the beginning of the 19th century to the mid-20th century. More than 200 pages of portraits, genre scenes, landscapes, and depictions of a still-intact wilderness make evident the diversity of the collection. The narrative proceeds chronologically, presenting early luminaries such as Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Remington, and Charles M. Russell; Robert Henri and the artists of the TAO community; and prominent modernist painters, including Maynard Dixon, Marsden Hartley, and Raymond Jonson. Numerous illustrations and expert interpretations chronicle the artistic, cultural, and identarian climate in the western United States during this period. A prologue by historian Dan Flores and an epilogue by art historian Erika Doss describe the vaster context in which to view this rich history of American art.

The narratives in Different Travellers, Different Eyes record journal and diary impressions of life in the nineteenth- and early twentieth-century western American frontier. And some of the artists' writings portray a picture far different from their well-known paintings, sculptures and photographs. Different Travellers, Different Eyes includes memoirs by: Titian R. Peale, George Catlin, Alfred Jacob Miller, John James Audubon, Father Nicolas Point, Paul Kane, Samuel Chamberlain, Frank Marryat, Solomon Nunes Carvalho, Balduin Mollhausen, Worthington Whittredge, William Keith, Kicking Bear (Mato Wanahtaka), Mary Hallock Foote, Frederic Remington, Thomas Moran, Emily Carr, Ernest L. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book offers a tour of a collection of paintings of the American West still in private hands. The Anschutz Collection covers all the ground expected in a wide-ranging, major survey, yet still has plenty of room for surprises. Every phase in the history of American art since the 182Os is included. There are pictures of impressive quality by lesser-known artists and examples from all the major painters who have depicted the West. You'll discover works by artists such as Marsden Hartley, Childe Hassam, Jan Matulka, and John Henry Twachtman, who painted western subjects only rarely, and pictures by those whose subjects were predominantly western. The collection is particularly rich in paintings made in Taos and Santa Fe during the first half of the twentieth century, when major American artists often found inspiration and stylistic renewal in the Southwest. Among the American masters represented here are George Bellows, Albert Bierstadt, George Caleb Bingham, Ernest Blumenschein, George Catlin, Stuart Davis, Asher B. Durand, George Inness, John Marin, Alfred Jacob Miller, Thomas Moran, Georgia O'Keeffe, Frederic Remington, Charles Marion Russell, and Walter Ufer."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only two-time winner of the prestigious Prix de West grand prize—the highest honor in the storied movement of art of the American West—George Carlson creates works in the tradition of American masters Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt, and the Taos School artists. No comprehensive book of George Carlson’s work has ever before been published, making this magnificent volume an incomparable addition to the libraries of collectors and students of Western art and American landscape painting. Likened to the French and American Impressionists, who turned to nature’s beauty for relief from the industrialized world, Carlson is regarded as one of the most important American artists of his generation. His Prix de West triumphs have come in two different mediums: sculpture and, more recently, landscape painting. Recognized as one of America’s greatest bronze sculptors, Carlson is also a master at using pastels and oils. Carlson’s tactile, textured landscape paintings are viewed as bold touchstones for a new movement taking hold in Western art—and it is inspiring new generations of Realists and Impressionists. With nature as his muse, Carlson is an American treasure, and this book demonstrates how and why he is making his own impactful contribution to the canon of art history.

Book excerpt: "The West is America. When considered through time and space, the West embraces the entire North American continent and its history. Just as there is no one true West, there is no one kind of western art. Through the linked, sometimes overlapping, themes of people, places, and ideas, art of the West can be viewed in ways not bounded by traditional notions, offering myriad meanings as well as an exciting and rewarding new appreciation for America, Americans, and American art." "The Rockwell Museum in Corning, New York, was founded in 1976 to house and exhibit fine collections of western art, Carder glass, guns, and antique toys. In 2000, the Museum's Board of Trustees decided to reinvent the Museum, focusing and building on its collections of western and Native American art. In 2001, the Rockwell Museum reopened as the Rockwell Museum of Western Art. With this catalog, the Rockwell Museum of Western Art is pleased to present highlights of its splendid collection of western and Native American art -- truly, "the best of the West in the East."
