Book excerpt: A Compton scattering [gamma]-ray source, capable of producing photons with energies ranging from 0.1 MeV to 0.9 MeV has been commissioned and characterized, and then used to perform nuclear resonance fluorescence (NRF) experiments. The key source parameters are the size (0.01 mm2), horizontal and vertical divergence (6 x 10 mrad2), duration (10 ps), spectrum and intensity (105 photons/shot). These parameters are summarized by the peak brightness, 1.5 x 1015 photons/mm2/mrad2/s/0.1%bandwidth, measured at 478 keV. Additional measurements of the flux as a function of the timing difference between the drive laser pulse and the relativistic photoelectron bunch, [gamma]-ray beam profile, and background evaluations are presented. These results are systematically compared to theoretical models and computer simulations. NRF measurements performed on 7Li in LiH demonstrate the potential of Compton scattering photon sources to accurately detect isotopes in situ.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents research on novel laboratory-scale synchrotron X-ray sources based on inverse Compton scattering and applications of their X-ray radiation using the Munich Compact Light Source (MuCLS) as an example. It provides an introduction to the theory of this laser-electron interaction, laser resonators and X-ray interactions with matter. On this basis, upgrades to the laser system including the development of a new laser optic, X-ray beam stabilisation and two techniques for fast X-ray energy switching of inverse Compton sources are presented. On the application side, the beamline, designed and developed for the inverse Compton X-ray source at the MuCLS, is described before various techniques and applications are demonstrated at this laboratory-scale synchrotron X-ray facility. Among them are K-edge subtraction imaging, X-ray phase contrast imaging and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Additionally, a new X-ray microscopy technique, called full-field structured-illumination super-resolution X-ray transmission microscopy, is presented. Apart from research conducted at the MuCLS, this thesis contains an in-depth overview on the state of the art of the various types of inverse Compton X-ray sources that have been realised so far. Accordingly, this thesis may serve as a guide and reference work for researchers working with inverse Compton X-ray sources as well as future users of such devices.

This new tunable laser has a central wavelength of 682.6 nm (red light) and a bandwidth less than one twentieth of one nanometer. It is tunable over a range greater than five nanometers. Tunable light sources have applications in fundamental research such as noise studies in optical amplifiers and high precision spectroscopy, as well as applications in optical engineering, including communications and LIDAR systems. Although tunable lasers exist for these purposes now, this new tunable laser has an unique construction. It contains a laser diode, which is a semiconductor pn junction diode that emits coherent light once a sufficient drive current is supplied, and an in-fiber Bragg grating that is used to modify the output of the laser diode. The grating provides additional feedback to the laser diode at the wavelength of the grating's Bragg condition. The combined system lasers at this wavelength. Tuning is accomplished by straining the grating within its fiber and thus changing the wavelength of its Bragg condition. This strain is evolved by embedding the grating in a composite beam and deflecting the beam.
