Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New cello students nearly always start in first position aided by finger tapes or guides for accurate finger placement. As they advance, they are expected to learn to shift out of first position, but the focus is on the movement of the shift rather than on note locations or pitch accuracy. In this book, author and versatile cellist Halley Feaster introduces a step-by-step approach to understanding each position, leading to thorough comprehension of the cello fingerboard and a more confident and well-rounded player. Together with its engaging video component, Cello Position Handbook shows advanced beginners and intermediate students what notes are available in each of 12 positions. Short exercises and excerpts are provided for practice in each location, ultimately enabling fluid performance without excessive shifting. On completion of this volume, students will be familiar with what notes are available in each position and be able to move comfortably between them while expanding their repertoires. Includes access to online video.

The carefully selected studies are arranged in order of increasing complexity, and Schroeder provides suggestions for fingering, bowing, and dynamics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cellists must obtain a solid foundation of technical skills in order to succeed in their careers. Whether one performs as an orchestral musician, solo or chamber performer, or teaches privately, technical skills are vital. The goal of this paper is to examine the development of technical study for the cello, explore the treatises and studies published already and determine the most important sources for the development of strong technique. These sources enable the creation of a sequence of cello etude study from the beginner to highly advanced cellist, which is provided in Appendix C. Research of many sources provided recommendations for which treatises and technical studies were most important. Resources, for example, include the Royal Conservatory of Music, which provides a Syllabus for their music competitions, and notes the required etudes for competition at different levels of cello performance. In addition, this source provides a description of the technical abilities desired for each level. An often-cited PhD paper by Ozan Tunca, surveys American College and University instructors for their recommended technical etudes and provides a list of the top ten. Louis Potter provides recommended etude studies in his book The Art of Cello Playing. The Cello Syllabus by Maria De Rungs recommends specific etude books for specific grade levels. Articles from the American String Teacher's Association by Louis Potter, Theodore Buchholz and Carl Enyeart also provide recommended etudes and important treatises. These sources along with a PhD paper by Il-Hee Hwang provide tables of technical skills that can be developed by studying specific etudes, which have been summarized in this paper. A very recent treatise of cello technique and intonation, Cello Mind, of 2017 will be introduced. In order for a cellist to survive the rigor of the profession, learning advanced repertoire quickly and confidently, a strong set of technical skills is required. The confidence obtained from this study allows the cellist freedom to perform musically, which is the ultimate goal of cello performance.
