Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You want to know about me? Well I'm going to tell you. The best way to live life is to live it with no regrets. I most certainly don't have any. I can tell you that I am blessed and privileged to have had the opportunities that life has given me. A proud legacy of being in the Marine Corp, something I'll treasure for life. Who says having children doesn't make you better or at least it should. When you have to care for someone other than yourself, you learn to slow down and not take as many risks, as I was so accustom to doing. I think most people's lives are interesting, if they have the guts to share it. I can say that some of my experiences have shaped the way I think and have colored much of who I am today. I believe this is true for most. Looking back on some of my most outrageous memories and my bleakest moments, I can look ahead and honestly say that it is far from being over. So let me catch you up. I so very much enjoyed my childhood, I'm sorry if you didn't. But if you didn't, throw yourself into mine, as I share the craziness of it all. Walk with me through the sands of the Middle East while I describe in detail what made those experiences so outrageous. Learn some lessons from my mistakes, I know I did. But in the least, I know you will be captivated by my most intimate memoires. Though the good outweighed the bad, there were some things that actually made me cry. I know, most men won't usually share that information with you, I guess that's what makes me different. Enjoy, Tears Behind My Eyes.

Book excerpt: “When you first view Rose-Lynn Fisher’s photographs, you might think you’re looking down at the world from an airplane, at dunes, skyscrapers or shorelines. In fact, you’re looking at her tears. . . . [There’s] poetry in the idea that our emotional terrain bears visual resemblance to the physical world; that our tears can look like the vistas we see out an airplane window. Fisher’s images are the only remaining trace of these places, which exist during a moment of intense feeling—and then vanish.” —NPR “[A] delicate, intimate book. . . . In The Topography of Tears photographer Rose-Lynn Fisher shows us a place where language strains to express grief, longing, pride, frustration, joy, the confrontation with something beautiful, the confrontation with an onion.” —Boston Globe Does a tear shed while chopping onions look different from a tear of happiness? In this powerful collection of images, an award-winning photographer trains her optical microscope and camera on her own tears and those of men, women, and children, released in moments of grief, pain, gratitude, and joy, and captured upon glass slides. These duotone photographs reveal the beauty of recurring patterns in nature and present evocative, crystalline imagery for contemplation. Underscored by poetic captions, they translate the mysterious act of crying into an atlas mapping the structure and magnificence of our interior lives. Rose-Lynn Fisher is an artist and author of the International Photography Award-winning studies Bee and The Topography of Tears. Her photographs are exhibited in galleries, festivals, and museums across the world and have been featured by the Dr. Oz Show, NPR, Smithsonian, Harper’s, New Yorker, Time, Wired, Reader’s Digest, Discover, Brain Pickings, and elsewhere. She received her BFA from Otis Art Institute and lives in Los Angeles.

Book excerpt: NOW A NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES The instant New York Times and #1 international bestseller. “You should read Behind Her Eyes...It’s bloody brilliant.” —Stephen King "An eerie thriller...Pinborough keeps us guessing about just who’s manipulating whom – until the ending reveals that we’ve been wholly complicit in this terrifying mind game.” —The New York Times Book Review Why is everyone talking about the ending of Sarah Pinborough's Behind Her Eyes? Louise is a single mom, a secretary, stuck in a modern-day rut. On a rare night out, she meets a man in a bar and sparks fly. Though he leaves after they kiss, she’s thrilled she finally connected with someone. When Louise arrives at work on Monday, she meets her new boss, David. The man from the bar. The very married man from the bar...who says the kiss was a terrible mistake, but who still can’t keep his eyes off Louise. And then Louise bumps into Adele, who’s new to town and in need of a friend. But she also just happens to be married to David. And if you think you know where this story is going, think again, because Behind Her Eyes is like no other book you’ve read before. David and Adele look like the picture-perfect husband and wife. But then why is David so controlling? And why is Adele so scared of him? As Louise is drawn into David and Adele’s orbit, she uncovers more puzzling questions than answers. The only thing that is crystal clear is that something in this marriage is very, very wrong. But Louise can’t guess how wrong—and how far a person might go to protect their marriage’s secrets. In Behind Her Eyes, Sarah Pinborough has written a novel that takes the modern day love triangle and not only turns it on its head, but completely reinvents it in a way that will leave readers reeling.

Book excerpt: This bestselling "lyrical, moving book: part essay, part memoir, part surprising cultural study" is an examination of why we cry, how we cry, and what it means to cry from a woman on the cusp of motherhood confronting her own depression (The New York Times Book Review). Heather Christle has just lost a dear friend to suicide and now must reckon with her own depression and the birth of her first child. As she faces her grief and impending parenthood, she decides to research the act of crying: what it is and why people do it, even if they rarely talk about it. Along the way, she discovers an artist who designed a frozen–tear–shooting gun and a moth that feeds on the tears of other animals. She researches tear–collecting devices (lachrymatories) and explores the role white women’s tears play in racist violence. Honest, intelligent, rapturous, and surprising, Christle’s investigations look through a mosaic of science, history, and her own lived experience to find new ways of understanding life, loss, and mental illness. The Crying Book is a deeply personal tribute to the fascinating strangeness of tears and the unexpected resilience of joy.

Book excerpt: Even the most painful paths can be guided to divine destinations... A single father and former Army Ranger, Ken Holbrook struggles to reconcile his resolute faith with immense grief. When Stacey James, a skittish but alluring newcomer, crosses Ken’s path and immediately bonds with Ginny, his young daughter, his world tilts further off balance. Slowly, Ken softens to Stacey as he realizes her poise in the face of hidden atrocity and the ease he feels in her presence. Stacey’s trust doesn’t come easily though, even if she is drawn to Ken’s peaceful, observant nature. As their lives overlap and they come to need one another in unsettling ways, Ken and Stacey must face the demons of their past. With unwavering support from the Holbrook family, the two discover their roads, though jarring, have been directed to the same destination: each other. While many tout the phrase “everything happens for a reason,” Ken and Stacey make deeper meaning within their choices and circumstances. Freedom from their emotional shackles will require forsaking the belief we must be fully healed to be fully embraced. If they can summon the courage, divine love could carry them around an oncoming sharp turn and through arduous, unforeseen territory. But if they can’t, their chance at soul-deep connection might feel lost forever. Sensual and nuanced, ALL MY ROADS is a story of holding heartache in one hand and joy in the other; of learning we are never outside the realm of beauty and healing.

Her name still makes my head buzz. We were in love, or so I thought. But she broke my heart. I made the army my home and tried to forget her fresh floral scent. Her heart-pounding beauty. The fool who stole her from me. I thought I'd succeeded. Until I got the call. "Jayden, I need your help." What could I say? It's been years since Savannah begged me for anything. Her child is missing. The cops think he's dead. Her husband thinks she's depressed. Crazy. Maybe she is. I won't stop until I find out the truth. The man who stole her son will pay. And just maybe Savannah and I can fix what we used to have.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda is comprised of the policies, protocols and practices enacted by a wide range of actors inspired by, or under the auspices, of the UN Security Council resolutions adopted under the title of ‘women and peace and security’. Since the adoption of the first resolution in 2000, resolution 1325, there have been nine others, each of which elaborates or extends aspects of the original resolution. This book provides a forward-looking collection of scholarship on the WPS agenda in two halves. The first half of the book presents a series of essays that each provide a glimpse of the rich and insightful research on WPS being undertaken in and about different contexts, to demonstrate the importance of centring the "local" as a site of knowledge production in the WPS agenda. The essays presented in the second half of the book also engage questions of knowledge production, documenting the exploratory methods in use in WPS scholarship, and highlighting those topics engaged at the hinterlands of what is a broad field – topics that gesture at the future of research in this area. The chapters in this book were originally published as special issues of the International Feminist Journal of Politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cassandra Edwards is a graduate student at Berkeley: gay, brilliant, nerve-racked, miserable. At the beginning of this novel, she drives back to her family ranch in the foothills of the Sierras to attend the wedding of her identical twin, Judith, to a nice young doctor from Connecticut. Cassandra, however, is hell-bent on sabotaging the wedding. Dorothy Baker’s entrancing tragicomic novella follows an unpredictable course of events in which her heroine appears variously as conniving, self-aware, pitiful, frenzied, absurd, and heartbroken—at once utterly impossible and tremendously sympathetic. As she struggles to come to terms with the only life she has, Cassandra reckons with her complicated feelings about the sister who she feels owes it to her to be her alter ego; with her father, a brandy-soaked retired professor of philosophy; and with the ghost of her dead mother. First published in 1962, Cassandra at the Wedding is a book of enduring freshness, insight, and verve. Like the fiction of Jeffrey Eugenides and Jhumpa Lahiri, it is the work of a master stylist with a profound understanding of the complexities of the heart and mind.
