Book excerpt: The current reform efforts in Bangladesh require a substantive change in how science is taught; an equally substantive change is needed in professional practice. This research set out to explore two basic aspects of secondary science teaching in Bangladesh. One was to guide participant teachers in changing their traditional teaching approach through the use of a concrete example of a new teaching approach. The second was to assist participant science teachers to change the culture of their existing professional practice. To address and explore both of these aims, a constructivist teaching approach (Prediction-Observation-Explanation, POE) was used as an intervention with participant teachers in an attempt to ascertain if it could influence their thinking and lead to a change in their traditional approach to teaching science. Simultaneously, all participant teachers involved were supported during the intervention regarding critique and challenge of lessons (theirs and their colleagues') in ways that were not a part of their regular culture of professional practice. The explicit intention being that through these collaborative ways a professional learning community might be developed through which their own professional learning might be enhanced in ways that would lead to improvements in their science teaching practice.The findings of this thesis show that the use of the POE approach influenced participant teachers' thinking about science teaching and learning. Through the POE approach, these teachers were encouraged to: use teaching aids as a purposeful tool in their teaching; develop understanding of science content with their students rather than using recall and recognition of facts; find ways to look for the relevance of science within real life situations; overcome a reliance on rote learning and theoretical exercises; and, encourage students' interest and enthusiasm in the classroom learning environment. Moreover, the collaborative activities through the intervention process influenced participant teachers' practice. They became committed to finding gaps or mismatches between their teaching and their students' learning and making decisions about the challenges they faced regarding their practice through this process of job-embedded learning.The results of this thesis ultimately carry implications for science teachers' practice in secondary schools in Bangladesh including teachers' own professional learning, as well as for curriculum developers and school administrators, and for pre and in-service education for secondary science teachers.

Book excerpt: Formative Classroom Assessment (FCA) can be the single most powerful activity to promote students' learning (Hattie, 2009). In Bangladesh FCA is not in practice (Ahsan, 2009). Policies and teacher preparation on FCA are the two factors that influence the practice of formative assessment in classrooms (Stiggins, 1999; Plake, 1993). In my research I aimed to learn how different actors, discourses, and materials come together to produce policies on FCA in policy network and translate the policies in a Teachers' Training College (TTC), and in classrooms in an urban school. I used 'critical socio-cultural approach to policy as practice' (Levinson, Sutton and Winstead, 2009) as a theoretical framework to inform my study. Actor Network Theory (Latour, 2005) was used as an analytical tool to analyze data to explore how different human and non-human actors assemble together to produce policy and translate policy into practice. I used Vertical Case Study (Vavrus and Bartlett, 2006) as a research method to collect data from national, regional, and local. At national level, I interviewed five policy actors and analyzed policy document related to FCA. At regional level, in a TTC, I interviewed the principal of the TTC, six trainers and one practice teacher; observed 14 sessions related to classroom assessment; conducted FGDs with four different trainee groups of pre and inservice teachers; analyzed training manuals and presentations. At local level in an urban school, I interviewed the head teacher, eight teachers, and the supervisor; observed 18 classes; conducted FGDs with two groups of parents and two groups of students; and analyzed CA related materials, such as tests and lesson plans. Findings reveal that at national level FCA has been termed differently in different policy documents with sporadic interventions. The policy document does not focus on FCA. For the teacher preparation at TTC, the trainers focus teaching mostly on summative assessment. At school there are new teachers who do not have any education or training on FCA. The limited knowledge and skills that experienced teachers acquire from TTC are also restrained by different factors, such as lack of resources and physical facilities, high teacher-student ration, teachers' low motivation, lack of support from the school and community when they try to apply.

Book excerpt: "The nursing profession in Bangladesh has undergone substantial development over recent decades but still faces significant challenges. A remarkable gap has been described between the institutionally-accepted image of nursing as the provision of hands-on care and the small amount of time that nurses allocate to it, especially in government hospitals. The reasons for this contradiction have shown a complex interaction between historical, socioeconomic and cultural factors. These are mainly related to the conflict between the British-inherited curriculum, with a strong emphasis on basic care activities, social and gender norms, and longstanding discrimination against nurses in their institutional settings and society. This research aims to provide a theoretical analysis of the ways in which structural factors intersect with the professional and social experiences of a group of nurse teachers. The objectives of the thesis are to describe nurses' views about nursing care and their profession, to discuss to what extent nursing education has been an empowering tool, and to analyse how the nurses' socioeconomic background, personal experiences and life events have influenced their professional careers and their conceptualisation of nursing and care. A critical phenomenological analysis of the nurses' life stories has been used, relating the stories to the broader history and political economy of nursing in Bangladesh. Twenty-two nurses were selected and interviewed over an eight-month fieldwork period, of which seven were selected as key informants. The discussion is mainly based on theoretical contributions from anthropology, practice theory, feminism and a critical analysis of nursing knowledge. A common rhetoric was found among the nurses: namely that nursing care has ‘deteriorated'. They tended to emphasise hands-on care and the ‘old' apprenticeship model, while also approving moves towards a more professional model. Nursing care activities were understood as a mixture of service and management of the wards and patients, linked to a wish to ‘utilise' the knowledge that they were continuously acquiring. Therefore, nursing education was broadly empowering in terms of knowledge, independence, and self-realization. Nevertheless, at some moments social and institutional discrimination made the m feel disempowered, frustrated and vulnerable. Even so, the nurses interviewed have achieved successful professional careers, together with a significant amount of social recognition. Without ignoring their outstanding individual capacities, the role that key people and institutions had in supporting them in their eagerness to learn has to be considered. Finally, the act of caring itself and the knowledge that it produces may also be a source of personal and collective agency. However, work is needed in order to create and maintain the necessary conditions for the caring experience to be empowering. However, programs on teacher development have provided mixed results. This report adopts a 360-degree perspective to review the current status of teacher development, demand and supply, and performance management in five countries from the South Asia region including Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, with limited reference to Bhutan and Maldives. It probes beyond teacher in-service training and teacher job conditions, and investigates systemic and structural issues. Continued investment may not be the best option to improve the quality and supply of teachers, and so the challenge is how to leverage resources to meet the demand.
