Book excerpt: The study evaluated secondary school teachers' perception on the effectiveness of physical punishment as a disciplinary measure in selected secondary schools in Osun State.This was with a view of exploring the effects of physical punishment in encouraging/discouraging secondary school students from delinquent and violent acts. Quantitative and Qualitative data were collected through simple random sampling, In-depth Interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGD). Data were analysed using inferential statistics and TextBase Beta respectively.The study revealed that there was no significant relationship between teachers' demographic attributes such as (age, level of education, length of service and sex) and their perception on physical punishment. The qualitative analysis showed the influence of religion on teachers' perception, (King Solomon, in the Book of Proverbs [13:24]), (Proverbs 22:15, KJV) and (Proverbs 23:13,15, KJV). In conclusion, physical punishment was perceived as an effective disciplinary measure for correcting and maintaining discipline among secondary school students as well as, in molding and shaping their cognitive and psychosocial growth and developmental ability.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine whether teachers' sense of efficacy influences their attitude towards the use of physical punishment in schools. There were two groups of participants in the study, pre-service and in-service early childhood teachers. The sample was made up of 78 in-service teachers from two different school districts and 61 pre-service teachers from a Midwestern university early childhood education preparation program. There were multiple significant findings in the study. It was found that the higher the overall teacher efficacy, the more frequently the participant was to agree with positive discipline practices and more likely to use appropriate classroom guidance techniques. However, overall referral to principal for negative discipline (corporal punishment) did not seem to be related to teacher efficacy, thus suggesting that teacher efficacy and teachers' attitude towards physical punishment are unrelated, and may be two different constructs.

Book excerpt: The study investigated the views of 52 teachers and 89 pupils on how corporal punishment affects learning in three school types in Bulawayo Zimbabwe. Two questionnaires, one for teachers and the other for pupils were used to collect data. Results indicate that corporal punishment is still very prevalent in schools regardless of type.However significant differences(Fischer's Exact test p=0,002) were noted in reports from the former group A school(93,9%) and private school(55,6%). The administration of corporal punishment was reported to be more in the group A school. The difference was not significant between the group B and the private school. There were significant differences in teacher/pupil perceptions with regards to corporal punishment and learning(chi-square=0,16, df=1, p=0,692).
