Confident in their documentation of its importance, researchers have now begun identifying some of the factors that influence whether or not parents are involved in their child 's schooling. Research has focused on both child, parent, and family factors as well as variables in the school environment such as teacher variables. Recent shifts to focus on the role of teachers and schools has informed changes in policy and legislature to support the development of family-school partnerships and parent involvement programs in schools (HiattMichael, 2001). Teachers and schools have a strong influence on parent involvement, affecting it through the specific strategies and behaviors they use (Epstein & Dauber, 1991; Seitsinger, Felner, Brand & Burns, 2008), self-efficacy for parent involvement (Garcia, 2004), beliefs and attitudes toward parent involvement (Pelco & Ries, 1999; Lawson, 2003), and parent-teacher relationships (Adams & Christenson, 2000). Given the accessibility of the sphere of school as a point for intervention and change, it makes sense to focus our efforts there instead of on family characteristics that may be more resistant to change. However, while implementing large-scale parent involvement programs like family-school partnerships is one way to effect change at the systemic level, ongoing professional development and support is necessary to ensure that parent involvement practices are integrated permanently (Kirschenbaum, 2001; Greenwood & Hickman, 1991). One potential method for providing this ongoing support is through teacher consultation and coaching. One recent model, the Classroom Check-Up (CCU), was developed as a consultation model to address growing requests by teachers for assistance with classroom management practices (Reinke, Lewis-Palmer, & Merrell, 2008). The CCU was patterned after the Family Check-Up (FCU), both of which are based on motivational interviewing (MI) and its theory of behavior change. The CCU and its approach to changing teacher behavior and classroom ecology provide a valuable model for addressing the issue of parent involvement. This study examined the feasibility of adapting the CCU to parent involvement and whether it can significantly impact teacher perceptions of parent involvement problems in their classroom. Results showed that teachers found the CCU-Parent Involvement (CCU-PI) required a reasonable amount of effort and time, and significantly decreased the level of severity with which they rated their parent involvement problems.

Book excerpt: Over the past several decades, issues including standardized student testing, teacher certifications, charter schools, and the inequality of funding sources within the traditional public education system have vexed education policy-makers. But in a potentially constructive development, researchers have found that parental involvement is linked to positive attitudes toward education, behavioral performance, and better academic achievement to support the success of a child’s learning in the classroom. Although the research on parental involvement is abundant in the literature, there may be too little attention paid to the perception of teachers toward parental involvement. The purpose of this quantitative study is to analyze the perceptions of teachers based on parental involvement activities guided by Epstein’s Six Typologies of Parental Involvement: (a) teacher perceptions of parents and barriers to parental involvement, (b) communication, (c) teacher expectations for parental involvement programs; (d) building parent/teacher partnerships; and (e) resolutions and resources to improve parental involvement in schools. A 20 item close-ended questionnaire revealed how teachers' perceptions influence parental involvement in middle and high schools. The results of the study add to the validity of Epstein’s’ Six Typologies of parental involvement indicating that parental involvement initiatives and programs need to be more purposeful when it comes to communication and parent/teacher partnerships. By creating awareness in schools and school programs, parents and teachers can further build upon strong relationships that lead to a declared cohesive partnership to further increase student participation at home and in school; ultimately enhancing parental involvement as a significant component in a child’s education.

Book excerpt: Research has demonstrated much evidence for the positive effect of parent involvement on academic achievement in children (Jeynes, 2003, 2007; Hoover-Dempsey, Walker, Sandler, Whetsel, Green, Wilkins, & Closson, 2005; Fan & Chen, 2001; Griffith, 1996). As children from low income and ethnic minority families are at the greatest risk for academic failure, it is important to study the processes that lead parents to become involved within at-risk populations. A comprehensive model such as the one proposed by Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler (1995, 1997) provides a map of important constructs to study. Research using this model appears promising as a way to conceptualize the processes that lead to parent involvement (Walker, Wilkins, Dallaire, Sandler, & Hoover-Dempsey, 2005). However, there are few studies that have tested this model with minority populations, and none that have focused on a primarily Latino population. Parent involvement research indicates inconsistent findings regarding the role of family background variables in the process of parent involvement (Ho & Willms, 1996; Griffith, 1998). The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of parent perceived invitations for involvement on parent involvement behavior with a primarily low-income, urban, Latino population. Two levels of the Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler model were tested: parent perceived invitations for involvement (child invitations, school invitations, and teacher invitations) and parent involvement behavior (home-based and school-based). Child invitations and teacher invitations were both found to be important types of invitation for total parent involvement (home-based and school-based combined). Home language, employment status, and parent education level moderated the effect of child invitations on total parent involvement. When parent involvement was differentiated into home-based and school-based involvement as separate dependent variables, child invitations had a significant effect on both types of involvement. Home language, employment status, and parent education level moderated the effect of child invitations on home-based parent involvement. For this population, child invitations for involvement appear to be the most important means to invite parent participation. Future research should continue to investigate the utility of Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler's model of parent involvement with specific ethnic groups, and consider family background variables due to their potentially moderating role.
