Book excerpt: One of the significant aspects of the experimental, problem-based teacher education program described in this report is the selection of students who have completed a bachelors degree with a major in an appropriate teaching field, have had three or more years of work experience in addition to their college degree, and who exhibit an acceptable level of relevant competencies and characteristics. The program (commonly known as probe) requires students to participate for one academic year of study in a full-time integrated program of study and school experience. When the students are not engaged in student teaching, the majority of their work is organized around study in a tutorial group. When the student teaching experience is completed, students engage in more intensive study and reflection. This final report contains several facets: (1) major questions addressed in the assessment of the program; (2) a description of the program and its several components; (3) a sample upon which the assessment is based; (4) the methodology used in the assessment; (5) instrumentation used in the assessment; (6) results and findings; (7) discussion of the results; and (8) implications for improving teacher education. The appendices contain selected portions of an ethnographic assessment of the program, a practice profile, and a discussion of reflectivity in the progam. (Jd).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teacher education is an evolving field with multiple pathways towards teacher certification. Due to an increasing emphasis on the benefits of field-based learning, teachers can now take alternative certification pathways to become teachers. The Handbook of Research on Field-Based Teacher Education is a pivotal reference source that combines field-based components with traditional programs, creating clinical experiences and “on-the-job” learning opportunities to further enrich teacher education. While highlighting topics such as certification design, preparation programs, and residency models, this publication explores theories of teaching and learning through collaborative efforts in pre-Kindergarten through grade 12 settings. This book is ideally designed for teacher education practitioners and researchers invested in the policies and practices of educational design.

Book excerpt: Practical, effective, evidence-based reading interventions that change students' lives Essentials of Understanding and Assessing Reading Difficulties is a practical, accessible, in-depth guide to reading assessment and intervention. It provides a detailed discussion of the nature and causes of reading difficulties, which will help develop the knowledge and confidence needed to accurately assess why a student is struggling. Readers will learn a framework for organizing testing results from current assessment batteries such as the WJ-IV, KTEA-3, and CTOPP-2. Case studies illustrate each of the concepts covered. A thorough discussion is provided on the assessment of phonics skills, phonological awareness, word recognition, reading fluency, and reading comprehension. Formatted for easy reading as well as quick reference, the text includes bullet points, icons, callout boxes, and other design elements to call attention to important information. Although a substantial amount of research has shown that most reading difficulties can be prevented or corrected, standard reading remediation efforts have proven largely ineffective. School psychologists are routinely called upon to evaluate students with reading difficulties and to make recommendations to address such difficulties. This book provides an overview of the best assessment and intervention techniques, backed by the most current research findings. Bridge the gap between research and practice Accurately assess the reason(s) why a student struggles in reading Improve reading skills using the most highly effective evidence-based techniques Reading may well be the most important thing students are taught during their school careers. It is a skill they will use every day of their lives; one that will dictate, in part, later life success. Struggling students need help now, and Essentials of Understanding and Assessing Reading Difficulties shows how to get these students on track.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This purpose of this report is to describe the condition of teacher education preparation at authorized colleges and universities in Colorado, including the total program enrollments, enrollments by licensure or endorsement area, and student demographic and institutional-level data. The report includes: (1) Overview of the enrollments in approved teacher education preparation programs; (2) Summaries of the findings from the follow-up site visits at two universities as part of the joint Colorado Department of Education and Colorado Commission on Higher Education program reauthorization process, pursuant to Colorado Revised Statutes; and (3) List of approved educator preparation programs, by institution. Data for the report was collected via the Student Unit Record Data System (SURDS) from those public and private institutions authorized to offer teacher education preparation programs in the state (a complete list of authorized institutions is found in Section IV of this report). Currently, all authorized teacher preparation programs require teacher candidates to pass the PLACE or Praxis assessments prior to student teaching. As a result, the pass rate on the PLACE and Praxis assessments of teacher preparation program graduates is 100 percent. Language requiring the reporting of results from a first- and third-year teacher survey was removed from statute in 2005. As a result, this report does not include information from such a survey that was present in previous reports. (Contains 7 footnotes and 13 tables.).
