Book excerpt: This study explored the predictive relationships of teacher efficacy, teacher knowledge, and teacher practices with student achievement. More specifically, secondary mathematics teachers' efficacy beliefs, geometry knowledge for teaching, and the cognitive complexity of the teachers' classroom practices were examined for 72 teachers in both urban and rural districts across Kentucky, along with the student achievement data of their students. Teacher and student data were obtained from the NSF-funded Geometry Assessment for Secondary Teachers (GAST) project, which administered geometry teacher knowledge assessments at the beginning and end of the school year, and collected cognitive complexity data from lessons through three classroom observations. Student achievement was measured using a modified geometry end-of-course assessment with a geometry readiness test as a covariate. Teacher efficacy data was obtained from the same teachers through an online survey at the end of the GAST project. Correlation, multiple regression, and hierarchical linear modeling techniques were used to analyze the data. Results revealed that the cognitive level of teacher practices significantly predicted student achievement. This finding provides support for increasing teacher awareness of the importance of high cognitive instruction by helping them recognize the essential features of classroom activities that provide this instruction and assisting them to plan and implement high cognitive tasks in their classrooms.

Book excerpt: This study analyzed relationships between teachers' ability to predict proficiency levels on standardized end-of-grade tests for grades three through eight in reading and mathematics relative to students' actual proficiency levels. This study also analyzed relationships between teacher-assigned grades in reading and mathematics for grades three through eight relative to student's actual proficiency levels. The research was conducted using state assessment data reports for an eastern North Carolina school district, a midsize district with over 17,000 students and 900 teachers. Data were organized into tables for examining relationships of teacher predictions and teacher-assigned grades to student achievement qualitatively through descriptive analysis. The Fisher's exact test was applied as the statistic of analysis for examining teacher predictions of proficiency and non-proficiency with actual student achievement. The Fisher's exact test was also applied as the statistic of analysis for examining teacher-assigned grades with actual student achievement. Results of this study determined the pattern of predictions more closely aligned to actual scores on Proficiency Level III in both reading and mathematics. The Fisher's exact test showed a statistically significant relationship exists between teacher prediction and actual student proficiency level. Twenty percent of students failed the reading test and 9% failed the mathematics test, even though their teachers had predicted they would pass with a Level III or IV. In both reading and mathematics, teachers in grade span 3-5 show a closer prediction to the actual achievement level obtained by the students than in grade span 6-8. More results determined misalignment in grading. In reading, of students with a C average, 56% were non-proficient on the end-of-grade assessment. In mathematics, of students with a C average, 30% were non-proficient, and of students with a D average, 56% were proficient on the end-of-grade assessment. In both reading and mathematics in grade span 3-5 the teacher-assigned grades in the A-B-C group showed a higher percentage in the proficient category at more levels than in grade span 6-8. Recognizing misalignment in teacher prediction and student achievement provides the foundation for an educational discussion regarding effective teaching practices and the ability of teachers to provide immediate intervention and support.

Prompted by this finding, many states and school districts have adopted value-added measures as indicators of teacher job performance. In this paper, we conduct a new test of the validity of value-added models. Using administrative student data from New York City, we apply commonly estimated value-added models to an outcome teachers cannot plausibly affect: student height. We find the standard deviation of teacher effects on height is nearly as large as that for math and reading achievement, raising obvious questions about validity. Subsequent analysis finds these “effects” are largely spurious variation (noise), rather than bias resulting from sorting on unobserved factors related to achievement. Given the difficulty of differentiating signal from noise in real-world teacher effect estimates, this paper serves as a cautionary tale for their use in practice.

This research aimed to connect student efficacy with key aspects of the instructional environment in six undergraduate math classes. Student surveys indicated significant differences in mean efficacy between classes, as well as significant differences in student perceptions of teacher behavior between the efficacy groups. Findings from observations of the classes revealed that key aspects of the instructional discourse varied by efficacy group. Instructors in higher efficacy classes tended to have more personal connections with students and used more positive and encouraging language, particularly in response to student errors. These findings mirror the results of similar studies at the K-12 level and have important implications for teaching practice in higher education.

Book excerpt: Female students are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics majors and careers despite indicators of comparable performance. The purpose of the present study is to examine the implications of teacher-reported performance goal practices on students' mathematics self-efficacy, valuing of mathematics, and mathematics achievement. Previous research has shown that performance goal practices may affect these student variables; however, this has not been explored extensively with regard to gender differences or at the elementary-school level. Data were collected from a sample of 692 students located in three school districts in southeastern Texas. Students were eligible for participation if they scored below the median score on a district-administered early literacy assessment. Students' mathematics self-efficacy and valuing of mathematics were assessed through self-report questionnaires. Mathematics achievement was assessed through an individually-administered achievement test. Classroom performance goal practices were assessed through a teacher self-report. Analyses were conducted using hierarchical linear modeling to account for classroom-level effects on student-level outcomes. Results indicated that gender differences in students' mathematics self-efficacy emerged at grade 4 and were also evident at grade 5, with male students reporting significantly higher mathematics self-efficacy at grades 4 and 5. There were no statistically significant gender differences in students' valuing of mathematics across grades 3-5. Results indicated that performance goal practices did not exert any statistically significant effects on student-level outcomes. At the same time, consistent with prior research, students' mathematics self-efficacy was found to be a significant predictor of mathematics achievement, when controlling for achievement during the prior school year.
