Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how the Volga Tatars, the largest ethnic minority within the Russian Federation, a Muslim minority, achieved a great deal of autonomy for Tatarstan in the years 1988 to 1992, but then lost this autonomy gradually over the course of the Putin era. It sets the issue in context, tracing the history of the Volga Tatars, the descendants of the Golden Horde whose Khans exercised overlordship over Muscovy in medieval times, and outlining Tsarist and Soviet nationalities policies and their enduring effects. It argues that a key factor driving the decline of greater autonomy, besides Putin’s policies of harmonisation and centralisation, was the behaviour of the minority elites, who were, despite their earlier engagement in ethnic mobilization, very acquiescent to the new Putin regime, deciding that co-operation would maximise their privileges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Katherine E. Graney examines one of the most important, puzzling, and ignored developments of the post-Soviet period: the persistence of the claim to possess state sovereignty by the ethnic republic of Tatarstan, one of the constituent members of the Russian Federation. In the first book by a Western scholar in English to chronicle the efforts made by the leadership of the Russian republic of Tatarstan to build and retain state sovereignty, Graney explores the many different dimensions of Tatarstan's move to become independent. By showing the 'sovereignty project' that the Tatarstani people have begun in order to realize their vision of becoming a separate political, social, and economic entity within the Russian Federation, Graney makes the case that this Tatarstani movement will significantly influence Russia's contemporary development in important and heretofore unrecognized ways. This book provides new insight into tackling policy issues regarding inter-ethnic relations and cultural pluralism within Russia, as well as within other European nations currently facing the same policy dilemmas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed academic treatise of the history of nationality in Tatarstan. The book demonstrates how state collapse and national revival influenced the divergence of worldviews among ex-Soviet people in Tatarstan, where a political movement for sovereignty (1986-2000) had significant social effects, most saliently, by increasing the domains where people speak the Tatar language and circulating ideas associated with Tatar culture. Also addresses the question of how Russian Muslims experience quotidian life in the post-Soviet period. The only book-length ethnography in English on Tatars, Russia’s second most populous nation, and also the largest Muslim community in the Federation, offers a major contribution to our understanding of how and why nations form and how and why they matter – and the limits of their influence, in the Tatar case.

Book excerpt: The Volga Tatars is the first Western-language study to investigate the history of the Volga Tatars—the earliest non-Christian and non-Slavic people to be incorporated into the Russian state—from the tenth through the twentieth centuries. The rare scholar to access sources in the Tatar language, Azade-Ay&şe Rorlich examines the shaping and evolution of Tatar identity, tracing the people's origins and conquest by the Russians, tsarist attempts to obliterate Tatar culture, and the growth of Tatar nationalism. At once a study of history, culture, religion, and politics, the book presents a solid frame of reference for one of Russia's Islamic peoples both before and after the Russian Revolution and illustrates the relevance of the Tatar past to modern events and concerns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1994, the term ‘Tatarstan model’ came into use to describe the path which one of Russia’s constituent republics had adopted during the unprecedented conditions of its transformation from a Soviet-period pseudo-autonomous entity into a democratic market-economy state. Since then, this particular model of development has attracted increasing attention from both domestic Russian and international observers, not least on account of its enduring ethnic and religious multiculturalism. Focusing as it does on one of the most interesting and unusual regional examples of the Russian market transformation, successfully piloted by the republic’s long-serving President Mintimer Shaimiev, this book also argues that whilst there may be no third way between democracy and tyranny, also in economic terms, there may be and, indeed, are different forms of successful transition not necessarily foreseen or properly understood by Western observers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Tatarstan: The Russian Yoke and the Vanishing Tatars surveys the history of the Tatar people living along the Volga river. It argues that the Volga Tatars were Russia’s first colonized people and after their subjugation in 1552, the Tatars have been continually mistreated by their Russian rulers, even when the nature of the Russian regime changed over time. For a long period the Tatars managed to evade overly deep Russian intrusion into their lives, after the middle of the 1850s Russian and Soviet authorities obliterated their traditional way of life. Despite efforts at restoring a measure of Tatar independence in the 1990s, russification has led to a marked fall in those identifying as Tatar in the Russian Federation pointing at the possibility of a disappearance altogether of the Volga Tatars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades Russia has played an increasingly active role in the Middle East as states within the region continue to diversify their relations with major external powers. Yet the role of specific Russian regions, especially those that share an 'Islamic identity' with the GCC has been overlooked. In this book Diana Galeeva examines the relations between the Gulf States and Russia from the Soviet era to the present day. Using the Republic of Tatarstan, one of Russia's Muslim polities as a case study, Galeeva demonstrates the emergence of relations between modern Tatarstan and the GCC States, evolving from concerns with economic survival to a rising paradiplomacy reliant on shared Islamic identities. Having conducted fieldwork in the Muslim Republics of Tatarstan, Bashkortostan and Dagestan, the book includes interviews with high-ranking political figures, heads of religious organisations and academics. Moving beyond solely economic and geopolitical considerations, the research in this book sheds light on the increasingly important role that culture and shared Islamic identity play in paradiplomacy efforts.

The study is based on extensive use of local press in Russian and Tatar and ethno-sociological research in the republic. The book is intended for specialists in Soviet/Russian politics and ethnic relations.

Book excerpt: The Republic of Tatarstan, the ancient Muslim country located in the heartland of the Russian Federation, has been traveling the same unknown path in the minefield of post-Communist market transition as the rest of the former Soviet Union. Yet under the leadership of its democratically elected President Mintimer Shaimiev, Tatarstan is a model of democratic transition, internationally recognized as the Model of Tatarstan. This book explains the democratic and social market-oriented reforms in Tatarstan as well as the prudent pragmatism of President Shaimiev, whose vision and practice of market reform have helped his country to ease the grip of the present Russian economic and financial crisis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology expounds the rich history of Kazan Tatar poetry, which has its beginnings in the early 12th century. Poets bear witness to the cultural, political as well as spiritual history of their nations, and in this sense, the history of poetry is the history of the nation. The authors try to single out the main themes of Kazan Tatar poetry in every epoch and period of time, the most penetrating of which is the theme of forceful alienation from one's motherland. The anthology unfolds against a rich and colourful background of social, cultural and political settings of each epoch, and presents Kazan Tatar poetry as it is, preserving its rhythmical, visual and rhyming structure supported by commentaries.
