Book excerpt: The global war on terror has reached catastrophic proportions, leading the U.S. Special Operations EOD team–Task Force Valor–to Chernobyl, where ghosts of past disasters are nothing compared to the nuclear nightmare about to unfold. With CIA Agent Mary “Phoenix” Walker heading her first Special Ops mission and Master Sergeant Bobby Sweeney fighting demons on and off the battlefield, Task Force Valor races to stop a terrorist threat in the Ukraine before Europe is turned into a radioactive wasteland. But when the terror reaches American shores, the team is powerless to help until they can save themselves. And when they finally track down the source of the chaos, what they find is worse than anything they could have imagined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the World Library of Psychologists series, international experts themselves present career-long collections of what they judge to be their finest pieces - extracts from books, key articles, salient research findings, and their major practical theoretical contributions. Christopher D. Frith has an international reputation as an eminent scholar and pioneer in the fields of schizophrenia, consciousness, and social cognition. A specially written introduction gives an overview of his career and contextualises the selection in relation to changes in the field during this time. This collection reflects the various directions of Frith’s work, which has become increasingly philosophically oriented throughout his career, and enables the reader to trace major developments in these areas over the last forty years. Frith has had his work nominated for the Royal Society Science Book Award and, in 2009, was awarded the Fyssen Foundation Prize for his work on neuropsychology. He has also been awarded several prestigious prizes for his collaborative work with Uta Frith. This book is an essential read for those students and researchers engaged in the fields of social cognition, cognitive psychology and consciousness studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a significant advancement in the theory and practice of knowledge engineering, the discipline concerned with the development of intelligent agents that use knowledge and reasoning to perform problem solving and decision-making tasks. It covers the main stages in the development of a knowledge-based agent: understanding the application domain, modeling problem solving in that domain, developing the ontology, learning the reasoning rules, and testing the agent. The book focuses on a special class of agents: cognitive assistants for evidence-based reasoning that learn complex problem-solving expertise directly from human experts, support experts, and nonexperts in problem solving and decision making, and teach their problem-solving expertise to students. A powerful learning agent shell, Disciple-EBR, is included with the book, enabling students, practitioners, and researchers to develop cognitive assistants rapidly in a wide variety of domains that require evidence-based reasoning, including intelligence analysis, cybersecurity, law, forensics, medicine, and education.

This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on experimental research in two disciplines that have a lot of common ground in terms of theory, experimental designs used, and methods for the analysis of experimental research data: education and psychology. Although the methods covered in this book are also frequently used in many other disciplines, including sociology and medicine, the examples in this book come from contemporary research topics in education and psychology. Various statistical packages, commercial and zero-cost Open Source ones, are used. The goal of this book is neither to cover all possible statistical methods out there nor to focus on a particular statistical software package. There are many excellent statistics textbooks on the market that present both basic and advanced concepts at an introductory level and/or provide a very detailed overview of options in a particular statistical software programme. This is not yet another book in that genre. Core theme of this book is a heuristic called the question-design-analysis bridge: there is a bridge connecting research questions and hypotheses, experimental design and sampling procedures, and common statistical methods in that context. Each statistical method is discussed in a concrete context of a set of research question with directed (one-sided) or undirected (two-sided) hypotheses and an experimental setup in line with these questions and hypotheses. Therefore, the titles of the chapters in this book do not include any names of statistical methods such as ‘analysis of variance’ or ‘analysis of covariance’. In a total of seventeen chapters, this book covers a wide range of topics of research questions that call for experimental designs and statistical methods, fairly basic or more advanced.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the study of possible adaptive sampling mechanisms for haptic data compression aimed at applications like tele-operations and tele-surgery. Demonstrating that the selection of the perceptual dead zones is a non-trivial problem, it presents an exposition of various issues that researchers must consider while designing compression algorithms based on just noticeable difference (JND). The book begins by identifying perceptually adaptive sampling strategies for 1-D haptic signals, and goes on to extend the findings on multidimensional signals to study directional sensitivity, if any. The book also discusses the effect of the rate of change of kinesthetic stimuli on the JND, temporal resolution for the perceivability of kinesthetic force stimuli, dependence of kinesthetic perception on the task being performed, the sequential effect on kinesthetic perception, and, correspondingly, on the perceptual dead zone. Offering a valuable resource for researchers, professionals, and graduate students working on haptics and machine perception studies, the book can also support interdisciplinary work focused on automation in surgery.
