Book excerpt: Excerpt from Taoist Teachings From the Book of Lieh Tzü: Translated From the Chinese, With Introduction and Notes The history of Taoist philosophy may be conveniently divided into three stages: the primitive stage, the stage of development, and the stage of degeneration. The first of these stages is only known to us through the medium of a single semi-historical figure, the philosopher Lao Tzu, whose birth is traditionally assigned to the year 604 B.C. Some would place the beginnings of Taoism much earlier than this, and consequently regard Lao Tzu rather as an expounder than as the actual founder of the system; just as Confucianism - that is, a moral code based on filial piety and buttressed by altruism and righteousness - may be said to have flourished long before Confucius. The two cases, however, are somewhat dissimilar. The teachings of Lao Tzu, as preserved in the Tao Te Ching, are not such as one can easily imagine being handed down from generation to generation among the people at large. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The teachings of Taoism, China's great wisdom tradition, apply to every aspect of life, from the physical to the spiritual—and include instruction on everything from lifestyle (a life of simplicity and moderation is best) to the work of inner alchemy that is said to lead to longevity and immortality. Here, Eva Wong presents and explains three classic texts on understanding the Tao in the macrocosm of the universe and the microcosm of the body that provide an excellent overview of the three traditional levels of the Taoist teachings—Outer, Inner, and Secret. The Outer teachings are concerned with understanding the Tao as manifested in nature and society. They are easily accessible to the layperson and consist of the Taoist philosophy of nature and humanity, advice on daily living, and a brief introduction to the beginning stages of Taoist meditation. The Inner teachings familiarize the practitioner with the energetic structure of the human body and introduce methods of stilling the mind and cultivating internal energy for health and longevity. The Secret teachings describe the highest level of internal-alchemical transformations within the body and mind for attaining immortality.

Book excerpt: Noted scholar and translator Lionel Tyler Giles offers his history and analysis of Taoism, an Eastern tradition which is variously termed philosophical and religious. The author's principal source is the founding text of Taoist thought; the Book of the Way - or Tao te Ching - by Lao Tzu. Though the book is considered of enormous importance to formalizing Taoism as a belief system, Giles finds that the moral tenets that comprise Taoist thought predate the birth of Lao Tzu by centuries. The possibility that Lao Tzu simply organized and discussed traits associated with the Tao is put to the reader, while common pitfalls for Westerners - for example, assuming that the Taoist 'Supreme Being' corresponds with the Christian God - are identified. Giles' enquiry serves as an introduction to a belief system which remains misunderstood even in the modern day. Determined to place Taoism in a wider context of Eastern wisdom, he examines the significance which Confucius held, alongside philosophical discussions of causality and destiny. Rather than being a separate entity, Taoism is demonstrated as being at the heart of ancient Eastern philosophy, with anecdotes and lessons deeply rooted in Chinese society of antiquity.

But although the Tao cannot be described by words, words can allow us to catch a fleeting glimpse of that mysterious energy of the universe which is the source of life. The readings in this book are a beginner's entrée into the vast treasury of writings from the sacred Chinese tradition, consisting of original translations of excerpts from the Taoist canon. Brief introductions and notes on the translation accompany the selections from the classics; books of devotional and mystical Taoism; texts of internal alchemy; stories of Taoist immortals, magicians, and sorcerers; ethical tracts; chants and rituals; and teachings on meditation and methods of longevity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Taoist Teachings From the Book of Lieh Tzu Translated From the Chinese, With Introduction and Notes Condensed into a single phrase, the injunction of Lao Tzu to mankind is, Follow Nature. This Is a good practical equivalent for the Chinese expression, Get hold of Tao, although Tao does not exactly correspond to the word Nature, as Ordinarily used by us to denote the sum of phenomena in this ever-changing universe. It seems to me, however, that the conception of Tao must have been reached, originally, through this channel. Lao Tzii, interpreting the plain facts of Nature before his eyes, concludes that behind her manifold workings there exists an ultimate Reality which in its essence is unfathom able and unknowable, yet manifests itself in laws of unfailing regularity. To this Essential Princi ple, this Power underlying the sensible phenomena of Nature, he gives, tentatively and with hesita tion, the name of Tao, the Way, though fully realising the inadequacy of any name to express the idea of that which is beyond all power of comprehension.
