Book Synopsis Global Inequality and American Foreign Policy in the 1970s by : Michael Franczak
Download or read book Global Inequality and American Foreign Policy in the 1970s written by Michael Franczak and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Global Inequality and American Foreign Policy in the 1970s, Michael Franczak demonstrates how Third World solidarity around the New International Economic Order (NIEO) forced US presidents from Richard Nixon to Ronald Reagan to consolidate American hegemony over an international economic order under attack abroad and lacking support at home. The goal of the nations that supported NIEO was to negotiate a redistribution of money and power from the global North to the global South. Their weapon was control over the major commodities—in particular oil—that undergirded the prosperity of the United States and Europe after World War II. Using newly available archival sources, as well as interviews with key administration officials, Franczak reveals how the NIEO and "North-South dialogue" negotiations brought global inequality to the forefront of US national security. The challenges posed by NIEO became an inflection point for some of the greatest economic, political, and moral crises of 1970s America, including the end of golden age liberalism and the return of the market, the splintering of the Democratic Party and the building of the Reagan coalition, and the rise of human rights in US foreign policy in the wake of the Vietnam War. The policy debates and decisions toward the NIEO were pivotal moments in the histories of three ideological trends—neoliberalism, neoconservatism, and human rights—that formed the core of America's post–Cold War foreign policy.
Download or read book Price Wars written by Rupert Russell and published by Doubleday. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating, groundbreaking exposé of how commodity traders in New York and London have destabilized societies all over the world, leaving the most vulnerable at the mercy of hunger, chaos, and war. • With a new Afterword for the ebook. For Rupert Russell, the Brexit vote was only the latest shock in a decade full of them: the unstoppable war in Syria, huge migrant flows into Europe, beheadings in Iraq, children placed in cages on the U.S. border. In Price Wars, he sets out on a worldwide journey to investigate what caused the wave of chaos that consumed the world in the 2010s. Russell travels to Tunisia, Iraq, Venezuela, Ukraine, East Africa, and Central America and discovers that unrest in all these places was triggered by dramatic and mysterious swings in the price of essential commodities. Deregulation of the commodities markets means that food prices can shoot up even in years of abundant harvests, causing hunger and protest. Oil prices and real-estate values can surge even when supplies are normal, enriching and emboldening dictators. It is this instability--fueled by banks and hedge funds in faraway New York and London--that has toppled regimes and unsettled the West. Price Wars is a fascinating, original, and groundbreaking exposé of the power of the commodities markets to disrupt the world.

Book Synopsis Taming the Bear by : Christopher Tate
Download or read book Taming the Bear written by Christopher Tate and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-04-23 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bear market may last for a week, a month or even a few years, but it can take only a day, an hour or even a few minutes for the value of an investment portfolio to be slashed to half of its former value. Some bear markets start with a bang, like the crash of ?7, others creep up slowly so that investors do not realise they are in a bear market and carry on as if nothing has happened. Of course, not even the experts can accurately forecast what the market will do. However, there are signs that can indicate a bear market is approaching and, if recognised, give prudent investors time to take steps to safeguard their portfolios. The first part of this book describes how to recognise the signals that might precede a bear market, and how to watch the various indices for sell signals. The second part deals with methods to help both investors and traders to survive by understanding what changes in volume represent, when to use a moving average and how to stay ahead of the pack. Chris Tate guides the reader step-by-step through his methods, as well as using examples from his own extensive trading experience. He uses charts to explain what to look for in the market and what action to take. This is written in his usual easy-to-understand style.

Book Synopsis Making Markets by : Mitchel Y. Abolafia
Download or read book Making Markets written by Mitchel Y. Abolafia and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2001-10-30 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the wake of million-dollar scandals brought about by Michael Milken, Ivan Boesky, and their like, Wall Street seems like the province of rampant individualism operating at the outermost extremes of self-interest and greed. But this, Mitchel Abolafia suggests, would be a case of missing the real culture of the Street for the characters who dominate the financial news. Making Markets, an ethnography of Wall Street culture, offers a more complex picture of how the market and its denizens work. Not merely masses of individuals striving independently, markets appear here as socially constructed institutions in which the behavior of traders is suspended in a web of customs, norms, and structures of control. Within these structures we see the actions that led to the Drexel Burnham and Salomon Brothers debacles not as bizarre aberrations, but as mere exaggerations of behavior accepted on the Street. Abolafia looks at three subcultures that coexist in the world of Wall Street: the stock, bond, and futures markets. Through interviews, anecdotes, and the author’s skillful analysis, we see how traders and New York Stock Exchange “specialists” negotiate the perpetual tension between short-term self-interest and long-term self-restraint that marks their respective communities—and how the temptation toward excess spurs market activity. We also see the complex relationships among those market communities—why, for instance, NYSE specialists resent the freedoms permitted over-the-counter bond traders and futures traders. Making Markets shows us that what propels Wall Street is not a fundamental human drive or instinct, but strategies enacted in the context of social relationships, cultural idioms, and institutions—a cycle that moves between phases of unbridled self-interest and collective self-restraint."
