Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents a comprehensive account of environmental history of India and its tribals from the late eighteenth onwards, covering both the colonial and post-colonial periods. The book elaborately discusses the colonial plunder of forest resources up to the introduction of the Forest Act (1878) and focuses on how colonial policy impacted on the Indian environment, opening the floodgates of forest resources plunder, primarily for timber and to establish coffee and tea plantations. The book argues that even after the advent of conservation initiatives, commercial exploitation of forests continued unabated while stringent restrictions were imposed on the tribals, curtailing their access to the jungles. It details how post-colonial governments and populist votebank politics followed the same commercial forest policy till the 1980s without any major reform, exploiting forest resources and also encroaching upon forest lands, pushing the self-sustainable tribal economy to crumble. The book offers a comprehensive account of India’s environmental history during both colonial and post-colonial times, contributing to the current environmental policy debates in Asia.

Download or read book Tamil Nadu, Human Development Report written by Social Science Press Staff and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Tamil Nadu's first Human Development Report. Tamil Nadu has fared very well in human development among the States in India. It needs to be noted, however, that there are vast variations in the indicators of Human development within the State itself. Factors contributing to human development are disaggregated in this Report, and analysed at the district level. This will enable readers to understand the regional disparities in Tamil Nadu and the reasons behind them. The Report not only puts within one cover all the various aspects of human development in Tamil Nadu but also seeks to explain why the State has fared well in certain areas and not in others. It also highlights the policy interventions that will be required to correct the imbalances.

Book Synopsis Patrons of the Poor by : Narayan Lakshman
Download or read book Patrons of the Poor written by Narayan Lakshman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why has there not been more progress with reducing poverty in India? Patrons of the Poor offers a rich and contemporary account of politics and policymaking in India, as it seeks to provide an answer to this vital question. Despite unprecedented economic growth, the last twenty years have witnessed a growing divergence across Indian states in terms of their poverty alleviation records. In that context, and given that state governments are responsible for a wide range of redistributive policies, this book analyses trends in state politics and policymaking. Based on the analysis, it explains why some Indian states have managed to reduce poverty more effectively than others. Using detailed case studies from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, the author examines the policymaking processes and political histories of these states. He argues that patterns of caste dominance combined with the degree of competition in populist policies can significantly explain whether states adopt pro-poor policies or not. Lakshman's analysis combines a deep reading of state-specific political and sociological data with a range of interviews with top political leaders, senior bureaucrats, and academics to corroborate his core argument.
