Book excerpt: Angie Hager’s path in life was not unfurling as she anticipated. Her womb was devoid of the babies she so desperately wanted to bring into the world. As she suffered in silence, she slowly began to realize that God had a plan for her life. But before his plan could take place, she first needed to learn lessons about herself, her marriage, and most importantly, how to rely on God through all circumstances. In a collection of heartfelt devotions, Hager shares personal stories, scripture, and reflective questions that demonstrate exactly how God is in control of every circumstance in our lives—including infertility. Her devotionals address the emotions that surround infertility such as jealousy, guilt, grief, and shame; the strain that infertility places on a marriage; our instinct to focus on what we don’t have instead of what we do; and our ability to find gratitude for all our blessings, even when they are not what we imagined them to be. Through it all, Hager reminds women that through prayer and faith, it is possible to strengthen their walk with Christ, even during such challenging times. Tamar’s Desire shares fifty-plus Christian devotions that offer hope, encouragement, and healing to those suffering from infertility.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God has a desire. His ultimate desire is to bring out something good out of something insignificant or something bad. (Jabez is a classic example.) His desire is to reach to man to be saved from sin. Man needs to make up his mind, set goals about how to desire to make his life better. This is to be done against the background of the realization that Satan, in his wiles, is all out to pervert what is in the mind of God for man. This he does by working on man’s mind after carefully studying his weaknesses. Satan abuses his will and emotions and, thereby, perverts the rightful use of his senses; hence, he exhibits lust of eyes, lust of the flesh, and pride of life. This book is a treatise that unearths how Satan goes about making man to pervert his desires, the effect of this perversion on him and generations unborn, and how he can gain victory at the end of the day. It is a must-read for anyone who desires to be free from every perversion of life, particularly sexual perversion. Counselors, most especially men of God and pastors who are saddled with counseling responsibility and parents/guardians who need to provide proper direction and upbringing of their children and wards, will also find it most useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advocates of the New Perspective on Paul appeal to the view that "righteousness" in biblical theology is a Verhaltnisbegriff (relational concept). This is the view that "righteousness" does not mean conformity to a norm, nor is it an essentially legal concept; rather, "righteousness" denotes the fulfillment of the demands of a relationship, since the relationship itself is the norm. This relational interpretation of "righteousness" was first put forward by Hermann Cremer in 1899 and exercised a profound influence in biblical scholarship throughout the 20th century. It lies at the root of the New Perspective claim that "the righteousness of God" in Paul is a cipher for God's saving faithfulness to his covenant, a view defended by N. T. Wright, among others. Charles Lee Irons provides a critical examination of Cremer's chief arguments for the relational, covenant-faithfulness interpretation. The author argues instead for the view that "the righteousness of God" in Rom 1:17; 3: 21-22; 10:3; 2 Cor 5:21; and Phil 3:9 is the status of righteousness that comes from God as a gift.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exploration of Genesis 38 in three interpretive writings shows how new meanings emerge through encounters between the biblical text and later Jewish communities. A literary reading within the canon suggests that the story of Judah and Tamar points to the morally ambiguous origins of David's lineage. Ancient Jewish exegesis, however, challenges this understanding. The Testament of Judah interprets Genesis 38 as the story of a warrior king's tragic downfall. Targum Neofiti develops it to illustrate the concept "sanctification of the (divine) Name". and Genesis Rabbah portrays it as a series of providential events issuing in the royal and messianic lineage. Esther Marie Menn pioneers a fresh approach to the study of biblical interpretation by analyzing the relation between interpretative genre, altered plot structure, and cultural values.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never in the history of humanity, has the world been faced with so many broken lives than what we are currently experiencing today. Men and especially women who have been bruised by circumstances and events that inflicted deep wounds on their lives and destiny form the units that make up the nations. In this book, thoughtfully authored by Rev Marjorielyn R Campbell, one of the most painful stories of the Bible is used to address the crippling effects of a sexual attack on a woman by a person of trust in her life. It is one of those taboo subjects that is never talked about within the family, better left where it is and better swept under the carpet never to receive justice. However, the author has sensitively done exactly that - justice. What this book ministers to the reader is not just something that was learned from another book or concepts that the human mind put together but it is from something that was given by God and birthed from a life totally devoted to God. No matter how bruised the life is and regardless of what may have happened, the reader will never remain the same by the time the last page is read. Healing will spring from within to the many lives that have been afflicted by this subtle ploy of the enemy to keep the daughters of God bound. A rose is still a rose and at the scent of water it will bud again.

The authors of this volume argue to the contrary: feminist and evangelical interpreters of the Old Testament can enter into a constructive dialogue that will be fruitful to both parties. They seek to illustrate this with reference to a number of texts and issues relevant to feminist Old Testament interpretation from an explicitly evangelical point of view. In so doing they raise issues that need to be addressed by both evangelical and feminist interpreters of the Old Testament, and present an invitation to faithful and fruitful reading of these portions of Scripture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story comes from the Second Book of Samuel and tells of the incestuous passion of Amnon, David's eldest son, for his half-sister, Tamar and the subsequent murder of Amnon by his brother Absolom. Amnon's lust is set in the context of complementary passions of ambition and revenge, reflected in Absolom and Tamar respectively. The play explores King David's conflict between justice and mercy when confronted with these tragic events. It is a work of constantly changing perspectives in which tragedy and comedy, instead of being simply juxtaposed, are blended in a highly original way. Tirso's play is one of the earliest treatments of a theme that has continued to be an inspiration for such modern writers as the novelist Dan Jacobson in The Rape of Tamar and the dramatist Peter Shaffer in Jonadab . Spanish text with facing-page translation, commentary and notes.

Book excerpt: Adultery, though not an umbrella concept for all the sexual prohibitions in the Hebrew Bible, enjoys a certain pride of place. Remarkably, it is the one sexual prohibition attested in all biblical genres, which makes it very representative in the Hebrew Bible. It is the only Hebrew biblical sexual prohibition explicitly mentioned in the Decalogue. A solid understanding of Hebrew biblical adultery, therefore, is an important step towards grasping the vital role of human sexuality in the Hebrew Bible, both in terms of inter-human relationships and the relationship between the human and the divine. Without prejudice to the contents of the Hebrew biblical lexicons and theological dictionaries, this work aims at providing a comprehensive understanding of adultery in the Hebrew Bible: its meaning, punishments and the implications thereof. Among others, it corrects some wrong assumptions about the concept of adultery in the Hebrew Bible, and provides a balanced and unbiased Hebrew biblical conception of adultery and the implications thereof for todays couples.

Assuming the androcentric nature of these writings, Scholz asks how we may read these texts in order to find some redemptive meaning for women, children, and men who have been injured by sexual violence and by "cultures of rape." Sacred Witness provides illuminating reflection on some of the most troubling texts in the Hebrew Bible.
