Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of the Labrador At this very moment my eyes rest on my trusty snowshoes hanging from a stag's horns by the fireside, and visions of the rest-giving miles I say it advisedly of tramping over winter snows rise before me, and they suggest such a contrast to my present prosaic occupa tion that I just have to get up and walk round the table. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wrecked on Labrador The story is, in large measure, a transcript of the writer's own diary; but the characters described would never be identified, since, in most cases, their individu alities are taken and combined from many people whom he met in his numerous visits to that region, covering a period of thirteen years. The intention has been to present in a simple and natural way to young readers some knowledge of a com paratively unknown land, and yet the one first visited and peopled on the New Continent, the claim to its dis covery having been disputed by the English, French, Welsh, Irish, Icelanders, and Norsemen. The customs and habits in the Labrador are de cidedly archaic remnants of the life of nearly three cen tuties ago; that is, the manners and customs of the people living in Labrador at the present time are quite similar to those which obtained in England and France in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The majority of the early inhabitants were French fishermen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labrador Days The ice in the big bay had broken up suddenly that year in the latter part of March before a tremendous ocean swell heaving in beneath it. The piles of firewood and the loads of timber for the summer fishing-rooms on all the outer islands were left standing on the landwash. The dog-tcams usually haul all this out at a stretch gallop over the glare ice which overlies in April the snow-covered surface of winter. For weeks, heavy pack ice, driven to and fro with the tides, but ever held in the bay with the onshore winds, had prevented the small boats freighting more than their families and the merest necessities to the summer stations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through Trackless Labrador At the same time, the Labrador (by its own imbabi tants and by Newfoundlanders it is always spoken of as the Labrador, the word peninsula being understood) is the most God-fearing land that I have ever visited. This, from Makkovik northwards, is due to the Moravian Mission; in the south to the Deep Sea Mission under the well-known Dr. Grenfell; while Mr. Stewart, of the Continental and Colonial Mission, labours among the heathen Eskimo round the Shores of Ungava Bay. If this book serves no other end than to draw attention to the fine work being done year in year out on the Labrador, it will not have been Written in vain. The chapter on the Moravian Mission, written from an intimate acquaintance of their life and methods, tells the story of men and women who, with none of the parade or the pose - not always unknown to missionary effort - are living lives beyond all praise. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grenfell of Labrador I have much pleasure in acceding to the Author's request that I should write a few lines by way of preface to his Life of Dr. Grenfell. It is twenty years since Dr. Grenfell was appointed Superintendent of the work being carried on by the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen in the North Sea and elsewhere round the shores of the British Isles, and from the day he gave himself to the cause of the fishermen his life may be said to have been one long, ceaseless effort to uplift and help the men whose lot he has made his own, and whose perils and hardships he has ever since been sharing. The Labrador Branch of the Society's work now claims Dr. Grenfell's undivided attention, and from June to November he is engaged in cruising about in the little hospital steamer "Strathcona" between the Straits of Belle Isle and Cape Chidley for the purpose of carrying healing and comfort to the dwellers upon those inhospitable, ice-bound shores. In winter he prosecutes the same kind of work with komatik and dog teams. It is the great love he bears these brave men of the North, and his large-hearted sympathy with the stress and hardship of their lives, which leads him to endure for their sake what to most men, reared under similar circumstances, would prove an altogether insupportable existence.
