Book Synopsis Leatherface - A Tale of Old Flanders by : Baroness Emmuska Orczy
Download or read book Leatherface - A Tale of Old Flanders written by Baroness Emmuska Orczy and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2015-05-08 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This vintage book contains Baroness Orczy’s 1916 historical novel, "Leatherface - A Tale Of Old Flanders". In 1572, Spain rules over Flanders with an iron fist. The threat of the Inquisition and its tortures holds the people in terror of their conquerors. William, the Prince of Orange, has led an unsuccessful rebellion, and is now a fugitive hiding in the city of Ghent. His cunning and faithful watchdog, a mysterious man called Leatherface for the mask he wears, is the only reason Orange is still alive. Spanish Duke de Alva conceives a plan to capture Orange by arranging the marriage of his general's daughter Lenora with the son of Ghent's High Bailiff, thus introducing a spy into a house known to be in sympathy with Orange. When Leatherface kills the bride's former lover, she swears vengeance on him and on all rebels. Intrigue follows intrigue, treachery and misunderstanding divides the enforced newlyweds, and Lenora can no longer tell whom she loves or hates until all seems too late. Many antiquarian books such as this are increasingly hard to come by and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this text now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

Download or read book A Bishop's Tale written by Craig Harline and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This absorbing book takes us back to the busy, colorful world of a Netherlandish Catholic bishop and his flock during the age of Reformation. It is drawn from a rare journal, one of many kept by Mathias Hovius from 1596 to 1620 while he was Archbishop of Mechelen (part of modern Belgium). Elegantly written, the book focuses not only on the life of Mathias Hovius but also on key events and characters of his time; it portrays “lived religion,” so that we see people from all sides getting involved in the constant negotiation of what it meant to be a good Catholic. Craig Harline and Eddy Put recreate the eventful life and times of Mathias Hovius—a world in which other-believers were outright heretics, the nagging fevers of old age were the result of unbalanced bodily humors, and a corruptible earth rested motionless at the center of the universe while God sat exalted on a throne just beyond the fixed stars. The authors also tell the stories of monks, nuns, priests, millers, pilgrims, peasant women, saints, town and village councils, and ordinary parishioners; each story, fascinating in its own right, illustrates a major theme in the history of the Catholic Reformation. In the end Harline and Put have painted a picture teeming with life and energy.
