Book excerpt: Fashion. Food Courts. Lingerie. Fire Bombing. Suicide. Free Parking. Welcome to the Mall. Why would one woman threaten to kill another for a pair of discounted shoes? Why are cross-dressers drawn to mall car parks? What do impulse buys have to do with rioting? And why are market research companies hiding the truth from us? From one of the UK s most acclaimed literary and media talents, Tales From The Mall, is a mash-up of fiction, essays and true stories, that tells the rise of the most iconic symbol of our modern age the shopping mall. From over a hundred interviews and confessions, Morrison re-tells the true-life tales of those who work, shop and even find love inside their walls. With wry wit, insight and compassion, Morrison uncovers the secrets of retail heaven and hell, to reveal how malls manipulate our emotions in cleverly calculated ways, how they are an ideal space to meet a new lover or to kill yourself and how they are taking over the world. Download or read book Malled written by Caitlin Kelly and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-04-14 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One woman's midcareer misadventures in the absurd world of American retail. After losing her job as a journalist and the security of a good salary, Caitlin Kelly was hard up for cash. When she saw that The North Face-an upscale outdoor clothing company-was hiring at her local mall, she went for an interview almost on a whim. Suddenly she found herself, middle-aged and mid-career, thrown headfirst into the bizarre alternate reality of the American mall: a world of low-wage workers selling overpriced goods to well-to-do customers. At first, Kelly found her part-time job fun and reaffirming, a way to maintain her sanity and sense of self-worth. But she describes how the unexpected physical pressures, the unreasonable dictates of a remote corporate bureaucracy, and the dead-end career path eventually took their toll. As she struggled through more than two years at the mall, despite surgeries, customer abuse, and corporate inanity, Kelly gained a deeper understanding of the plight of the retail worker. In the tradition of Nickel and Dimed, Malled challenges our assumptions about the world of retail, documenting one woman's struggle to find meaningful work in a broken system.

She leads the party-goers through the snowy woods to a shopping mall -- a place they have never seen before. Coyote gleefully shops with abandon, only to discover that fi lling your shopping cart with goodies is not quite the same thing as actually paying for them. The trickster is tricked and goes back to his cabin in the woods -- somewhat subdued -- though nothing can keep Coyote down for long. Book Synopsis Crime and Management, and Other Tall Tales by : Eugene M. Silverman
Download or read book Crime and Management, and Other Tall Tales written by Eugene M. Silverman and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-03-31 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Crime and Management, and Other Tall Tales, Carmine Cacciaguida gets a toy car for his fifth birthday. He checks his fathers car to see if it works the same way and discovers a dead body in the trunk. Years later, he becomes boss of his fathers gang but hates the violence. He and his daughter Claire devise a way to manage violent crime, similar to the way HMOs manage health care. Constituents pay insurance, the proceeds of which go to the criminals to ensure that they dont commit crimes. Victims of crime are reimbursed from this collected money reducing what the criminals get. So the criminals have no incentive to commit crimes. The story traces Carmines idea from its birth to implementation through deals with politicians and the contentious but humorous heads of the twelve major crime families in New York City. After one year, crime is down thirty-four percent in the city and Carmine makes plans to extend the network outside of the city. The six other tall tales reflect the quests for emotional intimacy of a dying Nobel laureate, a reluctant Don Juan, and the point of view of a surprised frog, an icon and a teapot, an artist who takes liberties with a statue, and a politicians wife. Exciting, readable, humorous, full of multicultural flavorsbut beneath all that is the ingenious comparison of ways of dealing with medical needs and a potential way of dealing with crime.
