On Motugra you'll find THE HANGING MONKEY, an inn and bar owned and operated by Irish ex-patriot Corky O'Brien. Here gather some of the most colorful rogues, scalawags and pirates ever to ply the trade routes of the Pacific during the late 1930s. Enter and meet Khuna, the bar's bouncer and former headhunter. Miko, the slim and beautiful Chinese girl with the mysterious past. One eyed Captain Nick Fortune, owner of the schooner Fortune's Folly and air freight pilot, Jimmy Dolan. And don't forget ace reporter, the lovely blond Grace Thomas. All of these characters spring from the mind of writer Bill Craig as homage to the classic pulp island stories of yesterday. Along for the ride, Craig is joined by Derrick Ferguson, Joshua Reynolds and Tommy Hancock. Here are four fast paced, island adventures guaranteed to whisk your imagination to tropical paradises of warm breezes, swaying palm trees and crystal blue waters. Book excerpt: One day, two little monkeys were so bored they didnt know what to do. They were tired of playing with their puzzles, video games, and all the other toys, and for once, they did all their chores early that day. They couldnt think of anything to do, so JT was just hanging around the house while Ana was playing with her favorite stuffed rabbit. It had big fluffy ears. One of the ears, the left one, is always bent down in front of his eye. It had a button for a nose. It was something her mother made her when she was a baby. She loved playing with it, and she took it everywhere she went. She suggested that they play hide-and-seek. JT played hide-and-seek with his sister before he knew that she was afraid of heights, and she was always the first to be found. Not wanting to hurt her feelings, he just said no and decided to just hang around the house, thinking it was better than playing with his little sister. He goes to see what his mother was up to. He finds her in the kitchen, but it wasnt long until she got tired of bumping into him. She asked him if he wanted to help her. This is something he really did not want to dohelping his mother in the house with the cooking and the cleaning. She really could have used his help, but he said no and wandered off to see what his father was doing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of Japanese fairy tales is the outcome of a suggestion made to me indirectly through a friend by Mr. Andrew Lang. They have been translated from the modern version written by Sadanami Sanjin. These stories are not literal translations, and though the Japanese story and all quaint Japanese expressions have been faithfully preserved, they have been told more with the view to interest young readers of the West than the technical student of folk-lore. Grateful acknowledgment is due to Mr. Y. Yasuoka, Miss Fusa Okamoto, my brother Nobumori Ozaki, Dr. Yoshihiro Takaki, and Miss Kameko Yamao, who have helped me with translations. The story which I have named “The Story of the Man who did not Wish to Die” is taken from a little book written a hundred years ago by one Shinsui Tamenaga. It is named Chosei Furo, or “Longevity.” “The Bamboo-cutter and the Moon-child” is taken from the classic “Taketari Monogatari,” and is NOT classed by the Japanese among their fairy tales, though it really belongs to this class of literature. The pictures were drawn by Mr. Kakuzo Fujiyama, a Tokio artist. In telling these stories in English I have followed my fancy in adding such touches of local color or description as they seemed to need or as pleased me, and in one or two instances I have gathered in an incident from another version. At all times, among my friends, both young and old, English or American, I have always found eager listeners to the beautiful legends and fairy tales of Japan, and in telling them I have also found that they were still unknown to the vast majority, and this has encouraged me to write them for the children of the West...FROM THE BOOKS.

Marina Chapman was stolen from her housing estate and abandoned deep in the Colombian jungle. That she survived is a miracle. Two days later, half-drugged, terrified, and starving, she came upon a troop of capuchin monkeys. Acting entirely on instinct, she tried to do what they did: copying their actions she slowly learned to fend for herself. So begins the story of her five years among the monkeys, during which time she gradually became feral; lost the ability to speak, lost all inhibition, lost any sense of being human, replacing human society with the social mores her new simian family. But society was eventually to reclaim her. At age ten she was discovered by a pair of hunters who took her to the lawless Colombian city of Cucuta where, in exchange for a parrot, they sold her to a brothel. When she learned that she was to be groomed for prostitution, she made her plans to escape. But her adventure was not over yet... In the vein of Slumdog Millionaire and City of God, this rousing story of a lost child who overcomes the dangers of the wild to finally reclaim her life will astonish readers everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the tales included in this volume deal with various themes in the Horror genre, many of which involve the supernatural and the occult. The movie The Exorcist, deeply influenced the plot lines and themes of many of the stories and poems found here. (I'm still scarred from watching that movie, having seen it on Day 2 of its release. There was no way a 17-year-old naïve kid could have seen what was coming in that one). Add to the fact that since age 10, I have been watching B grade Horror films, and grew up admiring Karloff, Lugosi, Vincent Price et al. With all of this in mind, it may be easy to guess how this book came to fruition. A demon hunter (protagonist) John Kane is featured in many of the stories, where he finds himself tackling sometimes insurmountable odds versus the demons Morax and/or Green Man. Each story is stand alone, and is generally not connected to any of the others (with one exception involving a villainous monkey god). Also included in this anthology is seven (very dark) poems.

Book excerpt: I Strange Whispers The wild folk in Pleasant Valley were whispering strange stories to one another. If the stories were true, they were most amazing. And if they were merely made up to cause talk, certainly they succeeded. Perhaps if somebody less tricky than Peter Mink and Tommy Fox had started these odd tales, the rest of the wild folk might have been quicker to believe them. Anyhow, the news offered the best of excuses for gossip. And many of the field- and forest-people repeated it so often that they almost began to believe it themselves. All but old Mr. Crow. He declared stoutly that the whole thing was nothing but a hoax. "You can't fool me!" he told people. But when they said that they had no intention of trying to, he had to change his statement. "I mean"-he explained-"I mean that neither Tommy Fox nor Peter Mink can fool me. They can't make me believe that they've seen anybody hanging by his tail in a tree-top." "Why not?" asked Mr. Crow's cousin, Jasper Jay. "Becaws--" said Mr. Crow. And then he corrected himself once more. "Because," he replied, "no 'possum ever came so far North as this. I've spent a good many winters in the South, and I ought to know. And besides," he added, "although a 'possum can hang by his tail, there never was one that could throw a stick or a stone. And I ought to know, for I've spent a good many winters in the South, where the 'possums live." Everybody had to admit that old Mr. Crow must know what he was talking about. And people began to feel rather foolish when they realized how near they had been to letting those two rascals-Peter Mink and Tommy Fox-deceive them. As for old Mr. Crow, having persuaded his neighbors to his way of thinking, he began to be more pleased with himself than ever. And he spent a good deal of time sitting in a tall tree near the cornfield, with his head on one side, hoping that his friends would notice how wise he looked. He was engaged in that agreeable pastime one afternoon when-thump!-something struck the limb on which he was perched. Mr. Crow gave a squawk and a jump. And then he glanced quickly toward the ground. There was no one anywhere in sight. So Mr. Crow looked somewhat silly. For a moment he had thought that Johnnie Green had thrown something at him. But he saw at once that he was mistaken. Of course it could have been nothing more than a dead branch falling. He settled himself again, trying to appear as if he hadn't been startled, when-plump!-something gave him a smart blow on his back. Old Mr. Crow flopped hastily into a neighboring tree. And this time he looked up instead of down. At first he could see nothing unusual. And he had almost made up his mind that something had fallen out of the sky, when a head showed itself from behind a limb and a queer, wrinkled face peered at him. Mr. Crow did not recognize the face. It was an odd one. In fact, he thought he had never seen an odder. But if he thought the face a queer one, it was not half as peculiar as the stranger's actions....

But you’ll have to read the book to find out why. Yorkshire’s Strangest Tales is a treasure trove of the hilarious, the odd and the baffling – an alternative travel guide to some of the county’s best-kept secrets. Read on, if you dare! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whereas Western intellectuals seek the essence of Buddhism in its doctrines and meditation practices, the traditional Buddhists of Asia absorb the ideas and values of their spiritual heritage through its rich narrative literature about the Buddha and his disciples. The most popular collection of Buddhist stories is, without doubt, the Jatakas. These are the stories of the Buddha's past births, relating his experiences as he passed from life to life on the way to becoming a Buddha. At times he takes the form of a bird, at times he is born as a hare, a monkey, a prince, a merchant, or an ascetic, but in each case he uses the challenges he meets to grow in generosity, virtue, patience, wisdom, and compassion. This anthology of Jatakas, ably told by Ken and Visakha Kawasaki, remains faithful to the original yet presents the stories in clear and simple language. It thereby makes the Jatakas accessible even to young readers and to those for whom English is not their first language.
