Book excerpt: Contemporary life is leaving us frazzled, overwhelmed, and out of sorts. Our life's rhythm is often borrowed from the pace of life around us. Humans have created such a loud, fast tempo of perfection and production that we often forget--if we ever knew it at all--the rhythms designed for our well-being. In The Sacred Pulse, pastor and author April Fiet invites us to examine the frantic patterns of our lives to reclaim the deeper, sacred pulses that pattern our days. Through stories, scripture, and practical guidance for daily living, she lays out twelve rhythms--including gardening, handcrafts, friendship, and holidays--that are both sustainable and sustaining. Everyday acts like mealtime and shopping, and sporadic rhythms like the occasional snow day: reclaiming these patterns can remind us of the holy movement of God in the world. In a world of hustle and bravado, silencing the noise takes practice. The Sacred Pulse shows us how to strip away all of the competing beats we have settled for so we can tap into the joyful, holy rhythms of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fasting. Solitude. Contemplative prayer. Lectio divina. Have you heard about these practices and wanted to try them? Have you wandered from one practice to another not sure quite what to do? Are you overwhelmed by all the to-dos of your spiritual life? We have good desires—for a more intimate prayer life, perhaps, or deeper insight from God's Word—but we don't know how to get there. So we give up our pursuit, tired from wandering aimlessly, and end up feeling guilty and more distant from God instead of closer. In the Spiritual Disciplines Handbook Adele Calhoun gives us directions for our journey toward intimacy with Christ. While the word discipline may make us want to run and hide, the author shows how desires and discipline work together to lead us to the transformation we're longing for—the transformation only Christ can bring. Instead of just giving information about spiritual disciplines, this Handbook is full of practical, accessible guidance that helps you actually do them. Mothers, fathers, plumbers, nurses, students—we're all on a journey. And spiritual disciplines are for all of us who desire to know Christ deeply and be like him. Here is direction for our desire, leading us to the ultimate destination: more of Christ himself.

Book excerpt: Renowned in the blogosphere as The Anchoress and as Catholic Portal editor of the popular Patheos.com, Elizabeth Scalia offers a powerful critique of the “gods” we worship today, reminding readers that life’s deepest desires can be satisfied only in Christ. Strange Gods, Scalia's debut book, is packed full of the iconoclastic vim and vigor that has won her a large, faithful Internet following. She presents readers with a surprising look at the ways in which modern people still commit the sin of idolatry in their everyday lives. While literal golden calves no longer dot the landscape, Scalia describes how legitimate loves become obsessively twisted into idols. She unmasks idolatry in a number of everyday experiences—friendships that become needy or possessive, commitments political and religious that grow so intense they lead to hatred of others, to name a few—and points to the incarnation of Christ and authentic worship of him as a way out of idolatry and into peace, happiness, and love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us at one time have said, or thought, something like: “So I procrastinate, it’s not like it’s hurting anyone!” “Enough about you, back to me.” “I deserve this, so I’m treating myself!” “If I can’t have it, she shouldn’t either.” “I’ll get around to it... or not.” “It’s not really gossip if it’s all true, right?” (And the granddaddy of them all) “But that doesn’t make me a bad person!” Are these really sins, you ask? After all, they’re not murder, theft, or violence. Don’t they just mean we’re human? Writer, speaker, and blogger Elizabeth Scalia takes a look at thirteen of these “little sins” that, if left unexamined and unconfessed, can have a serious impact on our spiritual lives and relationship with Christ. Through her honest (and sometimes funny) examination of these same sins in her own life, as well as Church teaching on each one, she helps us ask ourselves the tough questions, and the tools to kick these bad habits before they kick us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second part of Peterson's momentous five-volume work on spiritual theology, Eat This Book challenges us to read the Scriptures on their own terms, as God's revelation, and to live them as we read them. With warmth and wisdom Peterson offers greatly needed, down-to-earth counsel on spiritual reading through a fascinating conversation on the nature of language, the ancient practice of lectio divina, and the role of Scripture translations. What better way to continue that conversation than through an intensive study with other readers? This helpful study guide is designed to enable small groups in schools or churches -- or even individuals -- to delve deeper into the timely wisdom of Eat This Book. Peterson's discussion is here broken up into nine "sessions," each of which contains a summary, quotations to consider, questions for interaction, and a suggested activity, ending with a suggestion for prayer.

Book excerpt: Every Christian has inherited untold riches. As a child of the King and a joint heir with Christ he is a spiritual multi-millionaire. But comparatively few Christians bear the marks of spiritual affluence. Their conversation, character and conduct give the impression of spiritual impoverishment. Throughout the Church of Christ there is a universal complaint of dearth and deadness. Many Christians do not seem to be conscious of their lack or their need. They are indifferent and self-satisfied. But, on the other hand, there are many whose lives are characterised by a humiliating consciousness of defeat and failure, by a growing unrest, and by a perpetual striving for something never attained. Their hearts cry out insistently, “Lord, is there nothing better than this for me in the Christian life?” The purpose of these studies is to teach what are the Christian’s possessions in Christ and how they may be appropriated, enjoyed and used. These Bible studies were first given in embryo to pastors, evangelists, teachers and other Christian leaders in conferences held in China. Later They grew into full-size as they were taught in weekly Bible classes stretching over a period of six months. In response to many requests from both Chinese and missionary friends that this message might be made available for their use, it has been prepared for publication. God is building a spiritual house for His own glory and use. This house is composed of a foundation, a superstructure and furnishings. These studies attempt to furnish the plan of such a habitation and to show step by step the process of its building. Each chapter is, as it were, a story complete in itself yet connected both with the story underneath it and the one above it. The work is divided into three parts as here indicated: Part 1—Christ Jesus: The Foundation—Eternal, Incarnate, Crucified, Risen, Ascended, Exalted Part 2—The Believer in Christ and Christ in the Believer: The Superstructure Part 3—The Holy Spirit: The Furnishings—Indwelling, Infilling, Cleansing, Controlling, Guiding, Anointing It is the hope of the author that these studies may be used by groups. For such the bibliography will suggest additional material. This book is now given back to God with the prayer that He will use it to lift many to Life on the Highest Plane.
