Snow's formula is very accurate, since no terms greater than those of the fourth power in the ratio of pitch of the winding to the radius of the winding form have been neglected. It also takes into account the helical shape of the winding, and thus allows for the effect of the axial component of the current in contributing to the magnetic field. This is true of no other existing formula, so that Snow's formula is able to serve as a standard in investigating the accuracy of other formulas for the inductance of a solenoid.
