Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: rd This book constitutes a collection of extended versions of papers presented at the 23 IFIP TC7 Conference on System Modeling and Optimization, which was held in C- cow, Poland, on July 23–27, 2007. It contains 7 plenary and 22 contributed articles, the latter selected via a peer reviewing process. Most of the papers are concerned with optimization and optimal control. Some of them deal with practical issues, e. g. , p- formance-based design for seismic risk reduction, or evolutionary optimization in structural engineering. Many contributions concern optimization of infini- dimensional systems, ranging from a general overview of the variational analysis, through optimization and sensitivity analysis of PDE systems, to optimal control of neutral systems. A significant group of papers is devoted to shape analysis and opti- zation. Sufficient optimality conditions for ODE problems, and stochastic control methods applied to mathematical finance, are also investigated. The remaining papers are on mathematical programming, modeling, and information technology. The conference was the 23rd event in the series of such meetings biennially org- ized under the auspices of the Seventh Technical Committee “Systems Modeling and Optimization” of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP TC7).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive presentation of optimization and polyoptimization methods. The examples included are taken from various domains: mechanics, electrical engineering, economy, informatics, and automatic control, making the book especially attractive. With the motto “from general abstraction to practical examples,” it presents the theory and applications of optimization step by step, from the function of one variable and functions of many variables with constraints, to infinite dimensional problems (calculus of variations), a continuation of which are optimization methods of dynamical systems, that is, dynamic programming and the maximum principle, and finishing with polyoptimization methods. It includes numerous practical examples, e.g., optimization of hierarchical systems, optimization of time-delay systems, rocket stabilization modeled by balancing a stick on a finger, a simplified version of the journey to the moon, optimization of hybrid systems and of the electrical long transmission line, analytical determination of extremal errors in dynamical systems of the rth order, multicriteria optimization with safety margins (the skeleton method), and ending with a dynamic model of bicycle. The book is aimed at readers who wish to study modern optimization methods, from problem formulation and proofs to practical applications illustrated by inspiring concrete examples.

This book was released on 2009-11-25 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multibody systems are used extensively in the investigation of mechanical systems including structural and non-structural applications. It can be argued that among all the areas in solid mechanics the methodologies and applications associated to multibody dynamics are those that provide an ideal framework to aggregate d- ferent disciplines. This idea is clearly reflected, e. g. , in the multidisciplinary applications in biomechanics that use multibody dynamics to describe the motion of the biological entities, in finite elements where multibody dynamics provides - werful tools to describe large motion and kinematic restrictions between system components, in system control where the methodologies used in multibody dynamics are the prime form of describing the systems under analysis, or even in many - plications that involve fluid-structure interaction or aero elasticity. The development of industrial products or the development of analysis tools, using multibody dynamics methodologies, requires that the final result of the devel- ments are the best possible within some limitations, i. e. , they must be optimal. Furthermore, the performance of the developed systems must either be relatively insensitive to some of their design parameters or be sensitive in a controlled manner to other variables. Therefore, the sensitivity analysis of such systems is fundamental to support the decision making process. This book presents a broad range of tools for designing mechanical systems ranging from the kinematic and dynamic analysis of rigid and flexible multibody systems to their advanced optimization.

Book excerpt: This book Algebraic Modeling Systems – Modeling and Solving Real World Optimization Problems – deals with the aspects of modeling and solving real-world optimization problems in a unique combination. It treats systematically the major algebraic modeling languages (AMLs) and modeling systems (AMLs) used to solve mathematical optimization problems. AMLs helped significantly to increase the usage of mathematical optimization in industry. Therefore it is logical consequence that the GOR (Gesellschaft für Operations Research) Working Group Mathematical Optimization in Real Life had a second meeting devoted to AMLs, which, after 7 years, followed the original 71st Meeting of the GOR (Gesellschaft für Operations Research) Working Group Mathematical Optimization in Real Life which was held under the title Modeling Languages in Mathematical Optimization during April 23–25, 2003 in the German Physics Society Conference Building in Bad Honnef, Germany. While the first meeting resulted in the book Modeling Languages in Mathematical Optimization, this book is an offspring of the 86th Meeting of the GOR working group which was again held in Bad Honnef under the title Modeling Languages in Mathematical Optimization.
