Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systems Analysis and Simulation in Ecology, Volume I, is a book of ecology in transition from a ""soft"" science, synecology, to a ""hard"" science, systems ecology. It is an enthusiastic and optimistic statement about the fundamental adaptability of the scientific mechanism to newly appreciated truths of existence. It documents, in ecological science, a move away from the explanatory or cognitive criterion toward the predictive criterion, a hard one with the potential of leading ultimately to optimal design and control of ecosystems. The book is organized into three parts. Part I is an overview of some of the methods and rationales for ecological systems modeling for the purposes of simulation and systems analysis. It provides an elementary introduction to the use of analog and digital computers for simulation and a rationale for ecological model-building. Part II illustrates three different approaches to population modeling. These include a mathematical analysis of microbial (Chlorella, Selenastrum) dynamics in both continuous and batch cultures; and a bioenergetics study of the terrestrial isopod Armadillidium, utilizing concepts from control theory and the transfer function technique of classical dynamic analysis. Part III brings together a group of papers describing various aspects and philosophies of ecological simulation. These include common problems in ecosystem simulation and the question whether or not some of the newer methods of systems ecology might not be used in connection with some of the older data and observations of traditional synecology.

Book excerpt: Computer simulation has developed into a powerful tool for problem solving in a variety of areas, in the sciences as well as in industrial environments. New developments such as parallel simulation techniques will further improve the efficiency of the tool. Decision support systems, either based on mathematical models or on knowledge based expert systems will make computer simulation accessible to more users, and will provide better environments for systems analysis, modeling and simulation. Systems Analysis and Simulation presents the papers accepted for the 3rd International Symposium for Systems Analysis and Simulation held in Berlin (GDR) in September of 1988. The contributions selected for this two-volume set present the state of the art and current trends in computer simulation. Volume I emphasizes the theoretical foundations and the methodology for computer simulation and systems analysis. Volume II presents a variety of applications in fields such as manufacturing, robotics, economics, and biology.

Book excerpt: Systems Analysis and Modeling presents a fresh, new approach to systems analysis and modeling with a systems science flavor that stimulates systems thinking. After introducing systems modeling principles, the ensuing wide selection of examples aptly illustrate that anything which changes over time can be modeled as a system. Each example begins with a knowledge base that displays relevant information obtained from systems analysis. The diversity of examples clearly establishes a new protocol for synthesizing systems models. Macro-to-micro, top-down approach Multidisciplinary examples Incorporation of human knowledge to synthesise a systems model Clear and concise systems delimitation Complex systems using simple mathematics "Exact" reproduction of historical data plus model generated secondary data Systems simulation via systems models

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systems and their mathematical description play an important role in all branches of science. This book offers an introduction to mathematical modeling techniques. It is intended for undergrad students in applied natural science, in particular earth and environmental science, environmental engineering, as well as ecology, environmental chemistry, chemical engineering, agronomy, and forestry. The focus is on developing the basic methods of modeling. Students will learn how to build mathematical models of their own, but also how to analyze the properties of existing models. The book neither derives mathematical formulae, nor does it describe modeling software, instead focusing on the fundamental concepts behind mathematical models. A formulary in the appendix summarizes the necessary mathematical knowledge. To support independent learners, numerous examples and problems from various scientific disciplines are provided throughout the book. Thanks in no small part to the cartoons by Nikolas Stürchler, this introduction to the colorful world of modeling is both entertaining and rich in content

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume contains the papers which were accepted for presentation at the 3rd International Symposium for Systems Analysis and Simulation held in Berlin (GDR), September 12-:-16, 1988. It is already a tradition to meet a broad international community of experts in systems analysis, modelling and simulation at this symposium. This fact shows the requirements for a forum of presentation and discussion of new developments and applications of modelling and simulation in systems analysis. To realize the great interest in this field one has to take into consideration the developed role of computer simulation as a powerful tool of problem solving. More and more areas in sciences and production have been investigated by mathematical models and computer' simulation. Biological sciences and social sciences are even by now influenced by this trend. The model use on the computer has been very much improved in decision support systems. Parallel simulation will provide drastic shortening of computing time. Parallel simulation and model based decision support systems are brought in the focus of international activities. Numerical mathematics, systems theory and control sciences provide with algorithms supporting the modelling process itself based on simulation or analytic methods. Such simulation systems equipped with tools for modelling and graphics for representing results are real model support systems. A new important impact comes from artificial intelligence by knowledge processing. Expert systems may help decision making in case of missing mathematical models. Expert systems may also support teaching and using simulation systems.
