Book excerpt: The contents of this book are based on invited papers submittedfor presentation and discussion at the 1990 Material Handling Research Colloquium held in Hebron, Kentucky, June 19-21,1990. The Colloquium was sponsored and organized by the College Industry Councilfor Material Handling Education (CIC-MHE) with addi tional co-sponsorship and funding provided by numerous organizations (see ac knowledgements). The purpose of the Colloquium was to foster open discussion about the current state of material handling research at universitiesfrom across the United States and Canada. It was an opportunity to share specific research directions and accomplish ments. But more importantly, it was an opportunity to discuss the implications of the basic constraints to solving industry relevant problems in the field of material handling and closely related activities; the efficacy of the approaches being taken at the present time; and the directions believed to be of most value to the industry and to advancing the knowledge and science base of the material handling engineering discipline. The sponsoring organization, the College Industry Councilfor Material Handling Education was founded in 1952. The council is composed of college and university educators, material handling equipment manufacturers, distributors, users and con sultants, representatives of the business press plus professional staff and members of other organizations concerned with material handling education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this global society, manufacturers compete in many ways, and information infrastructures play a critical role in ensuring the right information is available at the right time and the right place to support informed decision making. The traditional approach that assumes all information can be located on a single mainframe and accessed by everybody in the enterprise has fallen by the wayside, and new infrastructures supporting extended or virtual enterprises and globally distributed supply chains are becoming increasingly vital to successful, competitive organizations. Functions, data, and information must be made be available to all without regard to location, accessibility, or the ability to view in a native format. This book is a result of a conference, which brought together a number of leading experts from around the world that work on topics related to the design, implementation, and use of information infrastructures for manufacturing. These experts presented their views on the state of the art, and on a wide variety of topics related to the title. The topics range from the establishment of a generic enterprise framework, which can be used for the design of a supporting information infrastructure to details of how geometric surfaces should be merged together. Although not an exhaustive publication, we believe that the publications in this book represent the state of the art in this research is essential reading for anyone who is attempting the design or development of an information infrastructure for all aspects of Manufacturing.

Book Synopsis Silvicultural Systems by : John D. Matthews
Download or read book Silvicultural Systems written by John D. Matthews and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991-08-29 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the theoretical basis and practical application of 20 diverse silvicultural systems for the benefit of ecologists, land-use managers and other professionals. These systems offer the key to regenerating, tending, and harvesting forests in an era of rapid deforestation and increasing demand for wood as fuel and building material. The approaches described here are being used successfully in widely different parts of the world, from Europe to the tropical rain forests, where reduced forest areas must be carefully managed in order to produce the highest possible sustained yield of timber products compatible with environmental protection and preservation. The systematic presentation and discussion of advantages and disadvantages of each program enables readers to select and apply the program most suitable for their needs.
