Book excerpt: The purpose of the present study is to consider the feasibility of increasing optical resolution by what may be termed synthetic-aperture optics. This term is defined here in a very broad sense to include any technique for achieving, with one or more small apertures, the resolution normally associated with a single large aperture. To date, the largest body of experience with aperture synthesis has been in the microwave region of the spectrum, where synthetic-aperture radars and radio-astronomy telescope arrays have been used for a number of years. It should be emphasized that the field of synthetic- aperture optics is very new and relatively unexplored. Volume 1 contains a connected account of the results of the summer study and employs a minimum of mathematics. The various approaches to optical aperture synthesis have been divided into six classes, as follows: Interferometry; Feedback-controlled optics; Imaging with partially filled apertures; Aperture synthesis with coherent illumination; Object restoration beyond the diffraction limit; and Miscellaneous aperture synthesis techniques.

Download or read book Transionospheric Synthetic Aperture Imaging written by Mikhail Gilman and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2017-04-13 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark monograph presents the most recent mathematical developments in the analysis of ionospheric distortions of SAR images and offers innovative new strategies for their mitigation. As a prerequisite to addressing these topics, the book also discusses the radar ambiguity theory as it applies to synthetic aperture imaging and the propagation of radio waves through the ionospheric plasma, including the anisotropic and turbulent cases. In addition, it covers a host of related subjects, such as the mathematical modeling of extended radar targets (as opposed to point-wise targets) and the scattering of radio waves off those targets, as well as the theoretical analysis of the start-stop approximation, which is used routinely in SAR signal processing but often without proper justification. The mathematics in this volume is clean and rigorous – no assumptions are hidden or ambiguously stated. The resulting work is truly interdisciplinary, providing both a comprehensive and thorough exposition of the field, as well as an accurate account of a range of relevant physical processes and phenomena. The book is intended for applied mathematicians interested in the area of radar imaging or, more generally, remote sensing, as well as physicists and electrical/electronic engineers who develop/operate spaceborne SAR sensors and perform the data processing. The methods in the book are also useful for researchers and practitioners working on other types of imaging. Moreover, the book is accessible to graduate students in applied mathematics, physics, engineering, and related disciplines. Praise for Transionospheric Synthetic Aperture Imaging: “I perceive that this text will mark a turning point in the field of synthetic aperture radar research and practice. I believe this text will instigate a new era of more rigorous image formation relieving the research, development and practitioner communities of inconsistent physical assumptions and numerical approaches.” – Richard Albanese, Senior Scientist, Albanese Defense and Energy Development LLC

Book Synopsis Laser Radar by : National Research Council
Download or read book Laser Radar written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-03-14 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's world, the range of technologies with the potential to threaten the security of U.S. military forces is extremely broad. These include developments in explosive materials, sensors, control systems, robotics, satellite systems, and computing power, to name just a few. Such technologies have not only enhanced the capabilities of U.S. military forces, but also offer enhanced offensive capabilities to potential adversaries - either directly through the development of more sophisticated weapons, or more indirectly through opportunities for interrupting the function of defensive U.S. military systems. Passive and active electro-optical (EO) sensing technologies are prime examples. Laser Radar considers the potential of active EO technologies to create surprise; i.e., systems that use a source of visible or infrared light to interrogate a target in combination with sensitive detectors and processors to analyze the returned light. The addition of an interrogating light source to the system adds rich new phenomenologies that enable new capabilities to be explored. This report evaluates the fundamental, physical limits to active EO sensor technologies with potential military utility; identifies key technologies that may help overcome the impediments within a 5-10 year timeframe; considers the pros and cons of implementing each existing or emerging technology; and evaluates the potential uses of active EO sensing technologies, including 3D mapping and multi-discriminate laser radar technologies.
Book Synopsis Optical Synthetic Aperture Techniques by :
Download or read book Optical Synthetic Aperture Techniques written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical synthetic aperture imaging concepts and techniques were theoretically and experimentally investigated. THe theory of optical synthetic aperture imaging was extended to arbitrary geometries and to multiple sources/receivers. Scanned synthetic aperture imaging was demonstrated at a wavelength of 1.22 mm. A bandwidth compression technique was analyzed and demonstrated that gave fine range resolution with only a narrow passband receiver using mode-locked lasers. A coherent optical spectrum analyzer that uses a tapped optical fiber was conceived and experimentally demonstrated. Special backprojection concepts were conceived that can process certain types of synthetic aperture data. Grating interferometer processing techniques were also investigated. (Author).

Book Synopsis Digital Processing of Synthetic Aperture Optical Imagery by : William T. Rhodes
Download or read book Digital Processing of Synthetic Aperture Optical Imagery written by William T. Rhodes and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The synthetic aperture approach offers an attractive method for obtaining high resolution imagery with low mass, space-borne optical telescopes. This report presents a simple but effective method which allows the processing of dilute-array synthetic aperture optical data in such a way that aberration effects, introduced by unspecified improper positioning of telescope mirror segments can be removed. It is especially well-suited to two-mirror-segment synthetic aperture telescopes, which are characterized by low mass and comparatively good signal-to-noise ratio characteristics. Although there are restrictions on the spectral bandwidth allowed in the imaging process, the method can nonetheless be applied to multispectral imagery. Adoption of the method to the imaging of astronomical subjects through the turbulent atmosphere is also discussed.
