Book excerpt: Ceramics have a number of applications as coating material due to their high hardness, wear and corrosion resistance, and the ability to withstand high temperatures. Critical to the success of these materials is the effective heat transfer through a material to allow for heat diffusion or effective cooling, which is often limited by the low thermal conductivity of many ceramic materials. To meet the challenge of improving the thermal conductivity of ceramics without lowering their performance envelope, carbon nanotubes were selected to improve the mechanical properties and thermal dispersion ability due to its excellent mechanical properties and high thermal conductivity in axial direction. However, the enhancements are far lower than expectation resulting from limited carbon nanotube content in ceramic matrix composites and the lack of alignment. These problems can be overcome if ceramic coatings are reinforced by carbon nanotubes with good dispersion and alignment. In this study, the well-dispersed and aligned carbon nanotubes preforms were achieved in the form of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) and Buckypaper. Polymer derived ceramic (PDC) was selected as the matrix to fabricate carbon nanotube reinforced ceramic nanocomposites through resin curing and pyrolysis. The SEM images indicates the alignment of carbon nanotubes in the PDC nanocomposites. The mechanical and thermal properties of the PDC nanocomposites were characterized through Vickers hardness measurement and Thermogravimetric Analysis. The ideal anisotropic properties of nanocomposites were confirmed by estimating the electrical conductivity in two orthogonal directions.

Book excerpt: This volume presents the characterization methods involved with carbon nanotubes and carbon nanotube-based composites, with a more detailed look at computational mechanics approaches, namely the finite element method. Special emphasis is placed on studies that consider the extent to which imperfections in the structure of the nanomaterials affect their mechanical properties. These defects may include random distribution of fibers in the composite structure, as well as atom vacancies, perturbation and doping in the structure of individual carbon nanotubes.

Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanofibers (CNFs) have an exceptional combination of properties that make them ideal materials for use as reinforcing particles in advanced composites. This investigation was aimed at obtaining fundamental understanding of the processing and properties of carbon nanoparticle/fiber-reinforced polymer composites -defined as multiscalereinforced polymer composites (MRPCs)- manufactured through a practical and scalable process. Such process consists of two stages. The first stage involves the synthesis of multiscalereinforcement fabrics (MRFs) by electrophoretic deposition of carboxylic acid- or aminefunctionalized CNTs and CNFs onto the surface of carbon fiber layers in aqueous medium; while the second stage proceeds with the stacking of the MRFs and infusion of the resulting preforms with an epoxy-amine resin system to obtain the MRPC. MRPCs manufactured following the described approach were tested for mechanical and electrical properties. Mechanical test results showed an increase in interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), shear stiffness, and compressive strength of all panels manufactured. Panels containing amine-functionalized carbon nanoparticles had the highest increase in properties: 13% in ILSS, 2.5-4 fold in shear stiffness, and up to 15% in compressive strength. On the other hand, it was found that through-plane electrical conductivity of MRPCs increased by 100% when using unsized MRFs. Investigation into the enhancement mechanism of mechanical and electrical properties was also performed. Discussion of these mechanisms are presented with emphasis placed on the fiber/matrix interface and the load transfer mechanisms between matrix, carbon nanoparticles, and carbon fiber.

This book focuses on carbon nanotubes and nano clays and explore their importance and roles in composites. Hence, the chapters address processing, rheology, mechanical properties and their interaction with fiber composites.Written by renowned researchers, this book is a collection of nine chapters which embrace the role of nano particles in composites. The first three chapters focus on the use of carbon nanotubes in composites. Chapter 4 explores the interaction between traditional fiber composites and the use of nano particles in terms of benefits and property enhancement in addition to the processing of such materials. Chapter 5 discusses in detail the rheology of suspensions that contain nanofibers and how one can modify existing models to describe their flow behavior. Chapters 6 through 9 address nano clay composites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New hybrid materials from the grafting of polystyrene on the surface of nitrogen doped carbon nanotube were synthesized. These chemically modified nanotubes were further used in the fabrication of polymer based nanocomposites. In these works, we studied the impact of the polymer grafted nanotubes on the electrical and mechanical properties of a polystyrene (PS) and a poly (butadiene-co-styrene) (PSBS) matrices. The grafted nanotubes have a better dispersion in a PS matrix as compared to the as received ones. Nevertheless, this kind of functionalization does not lower the percolation threshold since the grafted polymer layer electrically isolates the nanotubes each others. On the other hand, the mechanical reinforcement (PS matrix) increases when the nanotubes are polymer grafted. Furthermore, a stronger mechanical reinforcement is observed for large strain deformation. Concerning the nano-structured PSBS matrix, we observed a stronger mechanical reinforcement as compared to the PS matrix. The PS grafted nanotubes permit to connect the PS nano-domains of the matrix and consequently forms a percolating rigid network with a very low threshold (PC
