This Handbook brings together a carefully chosen set of world-class contributions from ecology, economics, and other development science and attempts to provide policy relevant scientific information on ecosystem services from marine and coastal ecosystems, nuances of economic valuation, relevant legal and sociological response policies for effective management of marine areas for enhanced human well being. The contributors focus on the possible nexus of science-society and science-policy with the objective of informing on decision makers of the governmental agencies, business and industry and civil society in general with respect to sustainable management of Oceans.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The document "Indicators for the sustainable development of finfish Mediterranean aquaculture: highlights from the InDAM Project" reports the activities carried out during the first year of the InDAM Project "Indicators for Sustainable Development of Aquaculture and Guidelines for their use in the Mediterranean", in support to the GFCM CAQ Working Group on Sustainability in Aquaculture (WGSA). The project focuses on the practical use of the indicators for sustainable aquaculture and their adaptation to the Mediterranean Region. The methodology applied for the identification of the preliminary list of indicators was based on the PCI (Principles, Criteria and Indicators) approach and took into consideration the main outcomes and achievements of the recent projects carried out in the Mediterranean on the identification of indicators for sustainable aquaculture. The document also reports the results of the workshop on the "Selection of indicators for the sustainable development of aquaculture in the Mediterranean Sea" (27-28 November 2008, Montpellier, France), the expert meeting on "Indicators for the sustainable development of aquaculture in the Mediterranean Sea" (24-26 February 2009, Montpellier, France) and the workshop on "Guidelines and application of indicators for sustainable development of aquaculture" (19-20 November 2009, Salammbô, Tunisia), with recommendations given by the WGSA. The two pilot studies on the selection and evaluation of the indicators for aquaculture sustainable development carried out in Mugla, Turkey, and Monastir, Tunisia, are described. The report also includes a series of documents gathered and produced by the experts involved in InDAM activities."--P. [4] of cover.

It is intended for the veterinarian, fish health biologist or extensionist, fish pathologist and fish health diagnostician supporting the management of major and emerging infectious and non-infectious health risks for the key temperate, subtropical and tropical finfish species of commercial and fisheries importance. This volume should be read in partnership with volume 2 on shellfish diseases as the principles and approach to the diagnosis and management of aquacultured animal species are similar and typically researchers, teachers, students, diagnostic laboratory scientists, aquaculture technicians and farmers need to be competent across both finfish and shellfish health issues. - A focus on the disease process of major or emerging viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections affecting aquacultured finfish species e.g. salmonids, carp, tilapia, eel, barramundi - A focus on important or emerging environmental, nutritional, genetic, deformity, toxicological, endocrine disruption and neoplastic diseases in finfish - A review of the immunology of finfish relevant to a practical understanding of disease diagnosis and management - An overview of laboratory diagnostic methods relevant to detection of finfish diseases - Concise discussion on the diverse risk factors of finfish diseases and options for their control

Book Synopsis Present Market Situation and Prospects of Meagre (Argyrosomus Regius), as an Emerging Species in Mediterranean Aquaculture by : Marie-Christine Monfort
Download or read book Present Market Situation and Prospects of Meagre (Argyrosomus Regius), as an Emerging Species in Mediterranean Aquaculture written by Marie-Christine Monfort and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2010 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document draws the picture of the existing market of meagre and describes the possible routes for development. Meagre culture started in France and in Italy in the late '90s and is developing in the Mediterranean Region, jumping from a few tonnes in 2 000 to over 10 000 tonnes expected in 2010, highlighting the appearance of a new aquaculture species on the market. Indeed, based on its aquaculture characteristics, meagre has the potential to become a mass market species, moving from the present position of a niche species with a limited production directed to selected market segments. The paper recommends some actions to be undertaken to consolidate good conditions for future growth and to reduce commercial risks.

Book Synopsis Regional review on status and trends in aquaculture development in Europe – 2020 by : Hough, C.
Download or read book Regional review on status and trends in aquaculture development in Europe – 2020 written by Hough, C. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-01-06 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review reports on aquaculture development trends and challenges during 2000–2018 in the European Region covering 51 countries including European Union member states. Aquaculture production in the European Region is composed of marine molluscs and diadromous, marine and freshwater fish. It reached 3.4 million tonnes in 2018, while having a value of USD 16.6 billion. Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout combine to give nearly two million tonnes, with molluscs providing 0.7 million tonnes; marine fish species supplied 0.4 million tonnes and freshwater fish 0.3 million tonnes. In Europe, the strongest aquaculture growth has been seen in non-European Union states (e.g. Norway, Turkey, Russian Federation) while several European Union states have diminished production (e.g. France, Netherlands, Italy). The growth in value (5.8 percent) is higher than production (0.9 percent), which is now dominated by salmonids (nearly 60 percent), primarily Atlantic salmon. Mediterranean marine fish farming is mainly for gilthead seabream and European seabass. European cyprinid production in freshwater has increased slightly, where the Russian Federation, Czechia and Poland are the biggest producers. Mussels are the principal shellfish reared, led by Spain, followed by oysters in France and clams in Italy. While publicly quoted companies have led salmon development in Northern Europe, elsewhere aquaculture is done, with few exceptions, by SMEs and micro-enterprises. Mechanisms for financial support exist for aquaculture development throughout Europe but these have notnbeen matched by anticipated results. When unpredictable and time-consuming licensing procedures are combined with extreme competition for space and strict environmental regulations, both growth and investments are discouraged. Technology development focus has been given to structures appropriate for marine off-shore or ‘open ocean’ operation. The use of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) for large operations has also developed, both for hatcheries and for farms. Treatment for diseases and parasites remains problematic. Use of the same vaccines, veterinary treatments and disinfectants is not standardised, restricting the best health and welfare practices. Access to appropriate and efficient ingredients for formulated feeds remains a key issue for European fish farming, directly influencing productivity and profitability. The European Union is the world’s largest single market for seafood and the most important destination for European aquaculture production. With preferences declared for wild products vs. farmed, the habits of the European consumer have been studied, indicating evolving influences on purchase decisions. These include the use of additives, food miles, climate change, acceptance of manufacturing practices, cost and access as well as health benefits.
