Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report gives methods for designing reactively loaded N-port scatterers to have desired scattering pattern characteristics. A method for obtaining a least-squares approximation to a desired magnitude radiation pattern, with the restriction that port currents are real, is developed. A procedure for obtaining maximum gain, with the restriction that the port currents are real, is also described. Conducting bodies can be reactively loaded to make any real port current the dominant port mode of that body. If the body is electrically small or of intermediate size, and if a sufficient number of ports are chosen, then the scattered field pattern is approximately the same as the synthesized pattern. A number of numerical examples are given for a body consisting of a wire triangle with two cross wires, on which four ports are defined. Computer programs with sample input - output data are given for each procedure discussed. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An N-port loaded scatterer is one having N ports to which lumped impedance loads or a load network is connected. Methods are given to determine the characteristic modes of a loaded scatterer and for using them in a modal solution for electromagnetic scattering. A procedure is also given for resonating any given real port current, which makes that current the dominant mode of the loaded scatterer. The theory is formulated both in terms of open-circuit and short-circuit network parameters. A number of numerical examples are given for a wire triangle to illustrate the general theory. Computer programs are included for all procedures discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: Describes how to systematically implement various characteristic mode (CM) theories into designs of practical antenna systems This book examines both theoretical developments of characteristic modes (CMs) and practical developments of CM-based methodologies for a variety of critical antenna designs. The book is divided into six chapters. Chapter 1 provides an introduction and discusses the recent advances of the CM theory and its applications in antenna engineering. Chapter 2 describes the formulation of the characteristic mode theory for perfectly electrically conducting (PEC) bodies and discusses its numerical implementations. Chapter 3 presents the CM theory for PEC structures embedded in multilayered medium and its applications. Chapter 4 covers recent advances in CM theory for dielectric bodies and also their applications. Chapter 5 discusses the CM theory for N-port networks and its applications to the design of antenna arrays. Finally, Chapter 6 discusses the design of platform-integrated antenna systems using characteristic modes. This book features the following: Introduces characteristic mode theories for various electromagnetic structures including PEC bodies, structures in multilayered medium, dielectric bodies, and N-port networks Examines CM applications in electrically small antennas, microstrip patch antennas, dielectric resonator antennas, multiport antennas, antenna arrays, and platform mounted antenna systems Discusses numerical algorithms for the implementation of the characteristic mode theories in computer code Characteristic Modes: Theory and Applications in Antenna Engineering will help antenna researchers, engineers, and students find new solutions for their antenna design challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The considerable growth of RFID is currently accompanied by the development of numerous identification technologies that complement those already available while seeking to answer new problems. Chipless RFID is one example. The goal is to both significantly reduce the price of the tag and increase the amount of information it contains, in order to compete with the barcode while retaining the benefits of a flexible reading approach based on radio communication. To solve the problem of the number of bits, this book describes the possibility of coding the information at the level of the overall shape of the RCS of the tag, which would facilitate reaching very large quantities. The design of the tags then returns to the resolution of the inverse problem of the electromagnetic signature. The proposed design methodology regularizes the problem by decomposing the signature on a basis of elementary patterns whose signature is chosen in advance. - Includes a theoretical presentation of scattering phenomenon in electromagnetism, regrouping elements from classical RFID, pulse radar, and antenna theory - Features a new coding technique based on magnitude level that is presented and characterized for different kinds of tags - Proposes, for the first time, RCS synthesis based on a physical approach for wide-frequency bands
