Book excerpt: Most urea inclusion compounds (UICs) are known to share a common packing arrangement in which the urea host forms helical ribbons held together by hydrogen bonds to form a series of linear, hexagonal tunnels. Because UICs can encapsulate a wide variety of linear guest molecules, they serve as useful model systems for probing mechanisms of crystal growth and molecular recognition. In this thesis, the syntheses (or attempts thereof) of six compounds that will serve as consequential guest molecules in studies of UICs are presented. These compounds are (5S,6S)-2,9-decanedione-d2, 1,6-dicyanohexane-1,1,6,6-d4, 1,11-undecanedioic acid, bis(3-oxobutyl) adipate, 2,16-heptadecanedione, and 2-eicosanone. With the exception of (5S,6S)-2,9-decanedione-d2, whose synthesis remains incomplete, detailed synthesis and crystal growth of the UICs of these compounds are discussed. Ongoing studies with the UICs containing these guests include the determination of the absolute configuration of UICs, the study of guest conformer population changes via solid-state NMR, the development and identification of novel ferroelastic UICs, and the classification of guest ordering in a series of alkanedione UICs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the fourth in the series and offers both quality and breadth. As a whole it reflects two increasingly discernible trends in modern structural chemistry. One trend is that parallel to the ever increasing specialization of techniques, there is a strong interaction between the techniques. This interaction crosses the boundaries between various experiments, between the experiments and computations, experiments and theory, and organic and inorganic chemistry. The other trend is the ever increasing penetration of the most modern aspects of structural chemistry the rest of chemistry, making the demarkation of structural chemistry increasingly fuzzy which is the most welcome development from a structural chemist's point of view.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific and practical interest in coronands (crown ethers), cryptands, podands as complexing agents for cations as well as for anions and neutral low molecular species is undeniable 1,2). The chemistry of crown compounds is steadily increasing. About 250 original papers dealing with crown chemistry appeared only in 1980. New molecules· with crown ether properties are constantly synthesized and new applications discov,?red. Owing to lack of space, only a small number of the original publications is men tioned here. Thus, in the literature compilation only some, but relevant works are selected for each chapter. Whenever possible, reference is made to reviews or review-like articles alone by means of which origin,al works can be consulted. The reviews given under ref. 1) are considered to be the most relevant. The formulae presented in the figures should be understood as representative structures outlining a specific field. 2 Classification of Oligo-/Multidentate Neutral Ligands and of their Complexes Today, a distinction is made between the classical ring oligoethers (crown ethers) and monocyclic coronands, oligocyclic spherical cryptands and the acyclic podands with respect to topological aspects 3). This classification and the topology are illustrated in Fig. 1, each figure representing the minimum number of donor atoms and chain segments characteristic of each class of compounds. Multidentate mono cyclic ligands with any type of donor atoms are called coronands ("crown compounds"), while the term crown ether should be reserved for cyclic oligoethers exclusively containing oxygen as donor atom.

Book excerpt: The pioneering work by Nobel Prize Laureates Heeger, MacDiarmid, and Shirakawa marked the birth of conductive polymers, a new family of revolutionary organic materials at the boundaries between classic plastics, metals, and semiconductors. Since then, a host of chemically diverse conducting polymeric structures has been devised with fascinating optical, electrical, magnetic, and redox properties that can be tuned using easy chemical/electrochemical doping. In recent decades, the combination and blend of conductive polymers with other materials families (e.g., carbon nanomaterials, metal nanoparticles or oxide nanostructures, common polymers, and resins) fostered the advent of a new generation of hybrid multifunctional composites with enhanced properties and high potential for present and near-future everyday life applications, ranging from photovoltaics, OLEDs, smart windows and garments, plastic batteries for sensors, and intelligent actuators. In this book, we compile some of the latest advances in the field, covering both old issues and new examples emphasizing emerging applications in biomedical science, healthcare, separation science, and water pollution abatement.

Its main theme revolves around two developments: catalysis and the role of process intensification in enhancing overall productivity. Each of these two subjects arebecoming increasingly useful in organic synthesis engineering, especially in the production of medium and small volume chemicals and enhancing reaction rates by extending laboratory techniques, such as ultrasound, phase transfer catalysts, membrane reactor, and microwaves, to industrial scaleproduction. This volume describes the applications of catalysis in organic synthesis and outlines different techniques of reaction rate and/or selectivity enhancement against a background of reaction engineering principles for both homogeneous and heterogeneous systems.

This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation investigates the inclusion complexation behavior of various guest molecules with host molecules cucurbit[8]uril (CB8) and cucurbit[7]uril (CB7). Additionally, new supramolecular systems mediated by cucurbituril host molecules are described. The investigation of these systems have been carried out by a wide range of techniques including NMR Spectroscopy, UV-Visible Spectroscopy, Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (ESI-MS) and electrochemical methods such as cyclic voltammetry and square-wave voltammetry. Chapter 1 briefly describes supramolecular chemistry and host-guest chemistry. Besides, the cucurbit[n]uril family, which are the host molecules that has been studied in this thesis, is presented and the synthesis of cucurbiturils, their structural properties and binding behaviors of each host molecule are summarized. In Chapter 2, three new guest molecules to form 1:2 host:guest complexes within the cavity of CB8 have been designed and synthesized. Monocationic phenyl-pyridinium derivatives have been studied to form ternary complexes in CB8 cavity. The binding behavior, stoichiometry of complexation and the binding affinities of guest molecules in the presence of one half equiv of host molecule CB8 have been investigated by 1H-NMR spectroscopy, UV-Visible spectroscopy, ESI-MS and PGSE-NMR techniques. In Chapter 3, dimeric forms of two guest molecules, which have been confirmed to form ternary complexes with CB8 in chapter 1, have been introduced and their interactions with CB8 to form supramolecular polymers were investigated. However, instead of forming supramolecular polymers, molecular loops, in which both binding sites of one guest molecule bind to the same CB8 molecule, are formed. The photochemistry experiments, which were performed in the presence of CB8, produced covalently bonded but small species mediated by CB8. In Chapter 4, the formation and kinetics of cucurbituril complexes in non- aqueous solvents have been investigated. Although it has been proposed that the hydrophobic forces are the predominant forces for the formation cucurbituril inclusion complexes, favored ion-dipole interactions solely form inclusion complexes with binding constants that reach 103 M-1 in an organic solvent. Additionally, kinetics of inclusion complexation of two guest molecules at two different temperatures have been studied. In Chapter 5, the effect of presence of a water-structure breaker, urea, on the binding constants and on the electrochemistry of various guest molecules has been investigated. In addition to the impacts of encapsulation on the electrochemistry of the encapsulated guests, the electrochemical response of residues that are adjacent to the cucurbituril portals has also been studied in the absence and in the presence of urea.
