Book excerpt: Asynchronous Circuit Design for VLSI Signal Processing is a collection of research papers on recent advances in the area of specification, design and analysis of asynchronous circuits and systems. This interest in designing digital computing systems without a global clock is prompted by the ever growing difficulty in adopting global synchronization as the only efficient means to system timing. Asynchronous circuits and systems have long held interest for circuit designers and researchers alike because of the inherent challenge involved in designing these circuits, as well as developing design techniques for them. The frontier research in this area can be traced back to Huffman's publications `The Synthesis of Sequential Switching Circuits' in 1954 followed by Unger's book, `Asynchronous Sequential Switching Circuits' in 1969 where a theoretical foundation for handling logic hazards was established. In the last few years a growing number of researchers have joined force in unveiling the mystery of designing correct asynchronous circuits, and better yet, have produced several alternatives in automatic synthesis and verification of such circuits. This collection of research papers represents a balanced view of current research efforts in the design, synthesis and verification of asynchronous systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the development and widespread use of large digital computers, which are switching circuits, there has been an increasing interest in switch ing circuit theory. Much effort has been spent in designing or synthesizing switching circuits, but unfortunately many of the procedures now in use are more of an art than a science in that much insight and experience are usually required on the part of the designer. Some systematic de sign methods have been introduced but these are only applicable to rather small circuits. This thesis develops and presents an algorithm for synthesizing asynchronous sequential switching circuits. The algorithm has certain properties which make it useful and applicable to large switching circuits such as the control unit of a digital computer. The steps in the algorithm are systematic and simple permitting a solution to be obtained in a relatively short amount of time. The resulting design is not optimum in that the circuit has the minimum number of states or minimum amount of logic. (Author).

Asynchronous circuits allow the circuit designer to use the maximum available speed of his devices; however, the lack of synchronism may cause problems in the operation of some circuits. Unwanted output changes, or hazards, may occur in the output due to different parts of the circuit switching at different times. Hazards occurring in the feedback variables, or a race between two variables could cause the circuit to make a transition to a different state than the desired one. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Switching Theory for Logic Synthesis covers the basic topics of switching theory and logic synthesis in fourteen chapters. Chapters 1 through 5 provide the mathematical foundation. Chapters 6 through 8 include an introduction to sequential circuits, optimization of sequential machines and asynchronous sequential circuits. Chapters 9 through 14 are the main feature of the book. These chapters introduce and explain various topics that make up the subject of logic synthesis: multi-valued input two-valued output function, logic design for PLDs/FPGAs, EXOR-based design, and complexity theories of logic networks. An appendix providing a history of switching theory is included. The reference list consists of over four hundred entries. Switching Theory for Logic Synthesis is based on the author's lectures at Kyushu Institute of Technology as well as seminars for CAD engineers from various Japanese technology companies. Switching Theory for Logic Synthesis will be of interest to CAD professionals and students at the advanced level. It is also useful as a textbook, as each chapter contains examples, illustrations, and exercises.

Book excerpt: Asynchronous Sequential Machine Design and Analysis provides a lucid, in-depth treatment of asynchronous state machine design and analysis presented in two parts: Part I on the background fundamentals related to asynchronous sequential logic circuits generally, and Part II on self-timed systems, high-performance asynchronous programmable sequencers, and arbiters. Part I provides a detailed review of the background fundamentals for the design and analysis of asynchronous finite state machines (FSMs). Included are the basic models, use of fully documented state diagrams, and the design and characteristics of basic memory cells and Muller C-elements. Simple FSMs using C-elements illustrate the design process. The detection and elimination of timing defects in asynchronous FSMs are covered in detail. This is followed by the array algebraic approach to the design of single-transition-time machines and use of CAD software for that purpose, one-hot asynchronous FSMs, and pulse mode FSMs. Part I concludes with the analysis procedures for asynchronous state machines. Part II is concerned mainly with self-timed systems, programmable sequencers, and arbiters. It begins with a detailed treatment of externally asynchronous/internally clocked (or pausable) systems that are delay-insensitive and metastability-hardened. This is followed by defect-free cascadable asynchronous sequencers, and defect-free one-hot asynchronous programmable sequencers--their characteristics, design, and applications. Part II concludes with arbiter modules of various types, those with and without metastability protection, together with applications. Presented in the appendices are brief reviews covering mixed-logic gate symbology, Boolean algebra, and entered-variable K-map minimization. End-of-chapter problems and a glossary of terms, expressions, and abbreviations contribute to the reader's learning experience. Five productivity tools are made available specifically for use with this text and briefly discussed in the Preface. Book excerpt: The synthesis of a sequential circuit that performs specified transformations under both static and dynamic conditions is considered. A table of steps is worked out. In most cases, simplifications that reduce the circuit cost are possible. Hazardous contests in the logic circuit can be precluded by introducing either special filters or structural redundancy. An example of synthesizing a sequential circuit from NOR or stable elements illustrates the method.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Many well-known synthesis procedures for asynchronous sequential circuits produce minimal or near-minimal results, but are practical only for very small problems. These algorithms become unwieldy when applied to "large" circuits with, for example, three or more input variables and twenty or more internal states. New heuristic procedures are described which permit the synthesis of very large machines. Although the resulting designs are generally not minimal, the heuristics are able to produce near-minimal solutions orders of magnitude more rapidly than the minimal algorithms. A method for specifying sequential circuit behavior is presented. Input-output sequences define submachines or modules. When properly interconnected, these modules form the required sequential circuit. It is shown that the waveform and interconnection specifications may easily be translated into flow table form. A large flow table simplification heuristic is developed. The algorithm may be applied to tables having hundreds of rows, and handles both normal and non-normal mode circuit specifications. Nonstandard state assignment procedures for normal, fundamental mode asynchronous sequential circuits are examined. An algorithm for rapidly generating large flow table internal state assignments is proposed. The algorithms described have been programmed in PL/1 and incorporated into an automated design system for asynchronous circuits; the system also includes minimum and near-minimum variable state assignment generators, a code evaluation routine, a design equation generator, and two Boolean equation simplification procedures. Large sequential circuits designed using the system illustrate the utility of the heuristic procedures"--Abstract, pages ii-iii.
