Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been enormous progress in our understanding of molybdenum and tungsten enzymes and relevant inorganic complexes of molybdenum and tungsten over the past twenty years. This set of three books provides a timely and comprehensive overview of the field and documents the latest research. Building on the first and second volumes that focussed on biochemistry and bioinorganic chemistry aspects, the third volume focusses on spectroscopic and computational methods that have been applied to both enzymes and model compounds. A particular emphasis is placed on how these important studies have been used to reveal critical components of enzyme mechanisms. This text will be a valuable reference to workers both inside and outside the field, including graduate students and young investigators interested in developing new research programs in this area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigation into the direct synthesis of Mo4Cl(P(C2H5)3)4 from Mo2(OAc)4 led to a synthetic procedure that produces yields greater than 80%. The single-crystal structure disclosed a planar rectangular cluster of molybdenum atoms. Metal-metal bond distances suggest that the long edges of the rectangular cluster should be considered to be single bonds and the short metal-metal bonds to be triple bonds. This view is reinforced by an extended Hueckel calculation. Attempts to add a metal atom to Mo4Cl(PR3)4 to form Mo5Cl10(PR3)3 led instead to a compound with the composition Mo8Cl16(PR3)4. Solution and reflectance uv-visible spectra and x-ray photoelectron spectra suggest that tetranuclear molybdenum units are present. The facile reaction between Mo8Cl16(PR3)4 and PR3 imply that the linkage between tetrameric units is weak.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results are reported of investigations on the solubility of cobalt or nickel in the molybdenum-rhodium hexagonal-close-packed compound, on the grain boundary phases observed in the molybdenum plus platinum-group metal hexagonal-close-packed compound, and on a preliminary characterization of the Laves phase Mo2Zr. Based on a starting composition of 62% Rh - 38% Mo, two ternary alloys of the hexagonal-close-packed compound were synthesized: 40% Mo, 36% Rh, 24% Co and 44% Mo, 40% Rh, 16% Ni. The hardnesses of both of the ternary alloys range from 525 DPH at room temperature to about 25 DPH at 1600 C (2912 F). The Mo-Rh-Co alloy has a liquidus range of 1670 to 1745 C (3038 to 3153 F), whereas the Mo-Rh-Ni alloy has a liquidus range from 1630 to 1720 C (2966 to 3128 F). Details of the procedure for extruding the Mo-Rh-Co alloy are discussed. Results are presented on the fractograph examination of several compositions of the hexagonal-close-packed intermetallic compound. It is suggested that phases found in the grain boundaries may contribute to the brittleness of the compound, but evidence is also presented to show that at least the Mo-Ir compositions may be inherently brittle. The procedures for preparing the Laves phase Mo2Zr are presented as are data on the hardness of the compound between room temperature and 800 C (1472 F). The hardness of this compound ranges from 550 DPH at room temperature to 460 DPH at 800 C (1472 F). (Author).
