This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ionic liquids are molten salts which exist as a group of non-molecular compounds having an ionic structure. The synthesis of ionic liquids involves the formation of the desired cation and anion exchange. Ionic liquids can be categorized under five basic classes that include ammonium, phosphonium, imidazolium, pyridinium, and pyrrolidinium. Characteristic features of ionic liquids are low vapor pressure at room temperature as well as high thermal stability for a wide range of temperatures. The physical and chemical properties such as thermal stability, viscosity, and solubility in water can be varied by just altering the combination of cations and anions. A solvent is any liquid that can dissolve another substance. Ionic liquids are used as solvents in different areas of chemistry such as organic synthesis, electrochemistry, extraction, spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. They are also applied in separation techniques such as liquid and gas chromatography or capillary electrophoresis. This book includes researches related to the synthesis, characterization and applications of solvents and ionic liquids. It includes contributions of experts and scientists which will provide innovative insights into this area of study.

Book Synopsis Synthesis, Characterization, and Applications of Hydrophobic Room Temperature Ionic Liquids. by : Julie Beth Rollins
Download or read book Synthesis, Characterization, and Applications of Hydrophobic Room Temperature Ionic Liquids. written by Julie Beth Rollins and published by . This book was released on 2011-09-09 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The synthesis and characterization of a series of novel hydrophobic room temperature ion liquids (RTILs) are reported along with their applications in a variety of different systems ranging from electrochemical cells to biphasic separations. The effect of alkyl chain length, anion composition, and the SiO2 surface charge density were examined in 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium cations (Cnmim, n = 4, 6, 8, 10, 12) at the RTIL/SiO2 interface using sum frequency vibrational spectroscopy (SFVS). These studies concluded that the orientation of the 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium cation was dictated largely by the length of the alkyl chain. As the alkyl chain length increased, the number of gauche defects in the chain decreased, and the imidazolium ring orientation becomes more perpendicular to the SiO2 surface. Changes in the surface charge density of the SiO2 also affected the orientation of the imidazolium ring. As the surface charge density became more negative the imidazolium ring oriented more parallel to the surface. Additionally, the oxidation of hydrogen and reduction of oxygen were examined in two hydrophobic RTILs. The RTILs used in this study were C 12mim bis(perfluoroethylsulfonyl)imide (BETI) and 1-dodecylimidazolium (C12im) BETI. The water concentration in the system was examined in addition to effects due to cation composition. Under water-equilibrated conditions the C12imBETI was more efficient than C12mimBETI and exhibited greater thermal stability in the electrochemical cell. Under ambient conditions the performance of the C12imBETI decreased and the performance of the C12mimBETI increased. This contradictory trend was attributed to different water structures within the RTILs. Finally, the subclass of chiral RTILs was explored. The chiral RTILs were made by pairing the D or L-N-hexyl-alpha-methylbenzylammonium (C6mba) and the D or L-N-hexyl-N, N, -dimethyl-alpha-methylbenzylammonium (C611mba) cation with BMSI and BETI anions. The bulk properties of these RTILs were examined under both water-equilibrated and ambient conditions and were found to be independent of enantiomeric form. Their structure at an octadecyltrichlorosilane coated SiO2 surface was examined using counterpropagating second harmonic generation (SHG). It was found that the most hydrophobic RTIL, C611mbaBETI, exhibited the highest adsorption at this interface. The studies presented here give new insight into how the ion composition of RTILs affects interfacial, bulk, and electrochemical propertie

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability, defined as the way to meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future ones to meet their own, is one of the main challenges of modern society. Within this context, chemistry plays a significant role, and solvent nature as well as its environmental impact are pivotal issues frequently addressed. Ionic liquids, i.e. organic salts that have melting temperatures lower than 100 °C, have been frequently hailed as alternatives to conventional organic solvents. Their greenness has been mainly ascribed to their low vapor pressure and flammability. However, in addition to this, their high solubilizing ability and low miscibility with conventional organic solvents frequently allow for reducing the amount used, as well as for their recycling. Ionic liquids, especially the ones featured by aromatic cations, are frequently described as “polymeric supramolecular fluids” constructed through the establishment of feeble but cooperative supramolecular interactions like Coulomb and π-π interactions, as well as hydrogen bonds. In general, ionic liquids are also indicated as “designer solvents” as it is possible to tailor their features to specific applications by simply modifying their cation or anion structure. In this way, small changes in the ion’s structure can give rise to solvents showing very different properties. The above premises widely justify the growing interest in the properties and applications of ionic liquids, seen in recent literature (according to Scopus, more than 27,000 papers published in the last five years have “ionic liquids” as a keyword). Thanks to their properties, they have been variously used as solvent media, solvents for the obtainment of gel phases, components in the building of dye-sensitized solar cells, media for the preparation of thermochromic materials, etc. This Research Topic aims to present how structural features can determine not only the properties of ionic liquids, but also their possible employment. In this latter case, the interest arises from their ability to affect the outcome of a given reaction in terms of rate, yield, and nature of the products obtained for general use in the field of materials chemistry. This article collection is dedicated to Prof. Kenneth R. Seddon for his outstanding contribution to the formation and development of the ionic liquids community.
Book Synopsis Applications of Ionic Liquids in Science and Technology by : Scott Handy
Download or read book Applications of Ionic Liquids in Science and Technology written by Scott Handy and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, of a two volume set on ionic liquids, focuses on the applications of ionic liquids in a growing range of areas. Throughout the 1990s, it seemed that most of the attention in the area of ionic liquids applications was directed toward their use as solvents for organic and transition-metal-catalyzed reactions. Certainly, this interest continues on to the present date, but the most innovative uses of ionic liquids span a much more diverse field than just synthesis. Some of the main topics of coverage include the application of RTILs in various electronic applications (batteries, capacitors, and light-emitting materials), polymers (synthesis and functionalization), nanomaterials (synthesis and stabilization), and separations. More unusual applications can be noted in the fields of biomass utilization, spectroscopy, optics, lubricants, fuels, and refrigerants. It is hoped that the diversity of this volume will serve as an inspiration for even further advances in the use of RTILs.
