In order to retain the planet earth from severe climate changes, it is important to change the basis of our energy system towards renewable and sustainable sources. The utilization of nearly unlimited sources, like solar energy, is in this context a reasonable choice as point of origin.This dissertation pursues the goal to further establish copper as central metal for water splitting applications by thorough spectroscopic analysis in order to conclude structure-property relationships. Photoactive copper(I) complexes of 2,9-bis(halomethyl)-1,10-phenanthroline were synthesized and characterized by a variety of spectroscopic methods. Chemical analytic, like single crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, provided structural confirmation and insights into coordination geometry and electronic properties. During the cycle as photosensitizer, copper(I) is photo-oxidized to copper(II). The related structural and electronic changes during this photooxidation were investigated in detail using an combination of electrochemistry with UV/VIS absorption spectroscopy. The analysis of the spectroscopic data was also supported by computational chemistry to identify and assign transitions in the experimental data.In the case of water oxidation catalysis, precursors of copper(II) water oxidation catalysts were synthesized by conversion of a copper(II) salt with commercially available and tailored non-redox innocent ligands and analyzed by identified by a combination of single crystal X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopy. Book excerpt: The synthesis of bis(salicylato)Cu(II) and Co(II) chelates based on methyl trifluorosalicylate and the corresponding M(OAc) 2 in the presence of alkali is reported. The following reaction with 2,2'-bipyridine and 1,10 phenanthroline in refluxing methanol affords heteroligand complexes containing methyl trifluorosalicylate and azaheterocyclic ligands in the ratio 2:1. However, the refluxing of Co(II) chelates in ethanol resulted in transesterification of methyl ester group to form heteroligand complexes of ethyl trifluorosalicylate while Cu(II) chelates underwent hydrolysis of ester group to obtain heteroligand complexes of trifluorosalicylic acid. The structures of obtained metal complexes were confirmed by X-Ray diffraction experiment, IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The antimycotic and antibacterial activities of synthesized metal complexes were investigated. The heteroligand metal complexes were found to exhibit moderate anti-Candida albicans activity. Among new series of complexes, the most activity showed the mixed metal complexes of trifluorosalicylates and 1,10-phenanthroline revealing a wide range of action in relation to pathogenic fungi and bacteria.

Book excerpt: Ultrafast excited state structural dynamics of [Cu{sup I}(dmp)2] (dmp = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline) have been studied to identify structural origins of transient spectroscopic changes during the photoinduced metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer (MLCT) transition that induces an electronic configuration change from Cu(I) (3d1°) to Cu(II) (3d9). This study has important connections with the flattening of the Franck-Condon state tetrahedral geometry and the ligation of Cu(II)* with the solvent observed in the thermally equilibrated MLCT state by our previous laser-initiated time-resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy (LITR-XAS) results. To better understand the structural photodynamics of Cu(I) complexes, we have studied both [Cu{sup I}(dmp)2] and [Cu{sup I}(dpp)2]+ (dpp = 2,9-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline) in solvents with different dielectric constants, viscosities and thermal diffusivities by transient absorption spectroscopy. The observed spectral dynamics suggest that a solvent-independent inner-sphere relaxation process is occurring despite the large amplitude motions due to the flattening of the tetrahedral coordinated geometry. The singlet fluorescence dynamics of photoexcited [Cu{sup I}(dmp)2]+ were measured in the coordinating solvent acetonitrile, using the fluorescence upconversion method at different emission wavelengths. At the bluest emission wavelengths, a prompt fluorescence lifetime of 66 fs is attributed to the excited state deactivation processes due to the internal conversion and intersystem crossing at the Franck-Condon state geometry. The differentiation between the prompt fluorescence lifetime with the tetrahedral Franck-Condon geometry and that with the flattened tetrahedral geometry uncovers an unexpected ultrafast flattening process in the MLCT state of [Cu{sup I}(dmp)2]+. These results provide guidance for future x-ray structural studies on ultrafast time scale, as well as for synthesis towards its applications in solar energy conversion.
