Book excerpt: This and its companion Volume 2 chronicle the proceedings of the First Technical Conference on Polyimides: Synthesis, Char acterization and Applications held under the auspices of the Mid Hudson Section of the Society of Plastics Engineers at Ellenville, New York, November 10-12, 1982. In the last decade or so there has been an accelerated interest in the use of polyimides for a variety of applications in a number of widely differing technologies. The applications of polyimides range from aerospace to microelectronics to medical field, and this is attributed to the fact that polyimides offer certain desirable traits, inter alia, high temperature stability. Polyimides are used as organic insulators, as adhesives, as coat ings, in composites, just to name a few of their uses. Even a casual search of the literature will underscore the importance of this class of materials and the high tempo of R&D activity taking place in the area of polyimides. So it was deemed that a conference on polyimides was both timely and needed. This conference was designed to provide a forum for discussion of various ramifications of polyimides, to bring together scientists and technologists interested in all aspects of polyimides and thus to provide an opportunity for cross-pollination of ideas, and to highlight areas which needed further and intensi fied R&D efforts. If the comments from the attendees are a baro meter of the success of a conference, then this event was highly successful and fulfilled amply its stated objectives.

Book excerpt: This volume chronicles the proceedings of the International Symposium on Polyimides and Other High Temperature Polymers: Synthesis, Characterization and Applications, held in Newark, New Jersey, November 29 – December 1, 1999. Polyimides constitute an important class of materials because of their many desirable traits, for example: low dielectric constant, high breakdown voltage, good planarization, wear resistance, radiation resistance, inertness to solvents, good adhesion properties, good hydrolytic stability, low thermal expansion, long-term stability and excellent mechanical properties. This volume contains a total of 21 papers, all rigorously peer reviewed and revised before inclusion, addressing many aspects and new developments in polyimides and other high temperature polymers. The book is divided into two parts: “Synthesis, Properties and Bulk Characterization†and “ Interfacial or Adhesion Aspects and Applicationsâ€. The topics covered include: structure-property relationships in polyimides; photochemistry and photophysics of polyimides; thermal and UV laser pyrolyses of polyimides; residual stress evaluation in polyimides; synthesis and characterization of a variety of polyimides; high Tg polyimide; fluorinated polyimides; highly oriented polyimide films; high-temperature aromatic copolymer thermosets; shape-memory polymers; polyimides as liquid crystal alignment layers; surface properties of polyimides; metal-containing polyimides for optoelectronic applications; polyimide L-B films; polyimides coated with copper sulfide; carbon fiber/polyimide composites; and simulations of the polyimide/silica interface. This volume offers a wealth of information and represents current commentary on the R&D activity taking place in the technologically highly important field of polyimides and other high temperature polymers and is of value and interest to anyone interested in the fundamental or applied aspects of this topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The overall goal of this work was to develop new polyimide systems for aerospace and optical applications. The work was divided into two parts. The first included the synthesis and characterization of low melt viscosity imide oligomers, and the second included the synthesis and characterization of polyimides with twisted configurations. The objective of the first part was to develop phenylethynyl-terminated imide oligomers for use in resin transfer molding (RTM) or resin infusion (RIF) composite fabrication. Some A-B monomer precursors, which possessed both nitro and anhydride functionalities, were synthesized for use in preparation of well-defined oligometers. Thus, a series of star-shaped oligomers and a series of linear oligomers containing twisted-biphenyl structures were prepared from different diamines and dianhydrides and then end-capped with 4-phenylethynylphthalic anhydride (PEPA). Most of the star-shaped oligomers displayed either high melt viscosities or high Tgs and Tms. However, one oligomer which was prepared from 1,3,5-tris(3-aminophenoxy)benzene displayed a low melt viscosity of 1 poise at 260°C and could be thermally cured to resin with a Tg above 350°C. Some of the linear twisted oligomers, which were prepared from 2,2'-bis(o-aminophenoxy)biphenyl, also displayed very low melt viscosities that ranged from 0.5 to 15 poise at 280°C. These materials could be thermally cured to resins with Tgs near 300°C. Oligomer blends were also prepared by solution mixing. Some of blends also displayed very low melt viscosities that ranged from 2 to 10 poise at 280°C. The blends could be thermally cured to resins with Tgs above 300°C. The objective of the second part of this work was to develop polyimides for use in optical applications that require non-biregringent materials. Thus, four series of polymers were prepared from 2,2'-bis(m-aminophenoxy)biphenyl, 2,2'-bis(o-aminophenoxy)biphenyl, 2,2'-bis(2-amino-4-trifluoromethylphenoxy)biphenyl and 2,2'-bis(2,3-dicarboxyphenoxy)biphenyl dianhydride. The polymers containing twisted biphenyl structures were soluble in common organic solvents and could be solution cast into clear, transparent flexible films 10-15 [mu]m thick. The films displayed birefringences ranging from 0.0257 to 0.0021"--Abstract

Book excerpt: The scope of this book is to give an up-to-date overview of the field of polyimide research - a field which has seen rapid growth and diversification in the last few years as well as a stronger involvement of university laboratories. Although synthesis of new materials still plays a major role, a number of groups work now on understanding the details of polyimide chemistry, structure and properties. This is reflected in the papers presented in this book which examine several major aspects of polyimides: new materials, synthesis, cure studies, structure-property studies, studies of mechanical and electrical properties, analysis of polyimides, interface studies, and applications. The papers, too numerous to list individually, are grouped under the following headings: 1. New Materials (18 papers): includes polyimide blends (a new field), photosensitive polyimides, silicon-containing polyimides, copolymers, bismaleimide resins, semi-interpenetrating networks. 2. Synthesis (6 papers): includes new synthetic methods, polymerization mechanisms and properties of precursor solutions. 3.

Book excerpt: Fluoropolymers are used in applications demanding service at enhanced temperature while maintaining their structural integrity and have excellent combination of chemical, physical and mechanical properties. Advancements in materials and processing technology mean that a huge amount of research is currently taking place into new, high performance applications for specialty fluorinated polymers. This book is a complete review of the current research in synthesizing new fluorinated high performance polymers and their application in the field of low dielectric constant materials, membrane based separation (gas and liquid) and proton exchange membranes. Special emphasis is given to the preparation of soluble high performance polymers by incorporating fluorine and different structural elements so as to use these classes of polymers in different membrane based applications, including low dielectric constant materials, gas separation, pervaporation, proton exchange membranes in fuel cells, and more. The coverage of processing properties and commercial aspects - as well as a practical assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of specialty fluoropolymers compared to other materials - enables engineers and product designers to apply the latest scientific developments in this area in a practical setting. Thorough coverage of modern applications for specialty fluorinated polymers, including membranes and coatings – giving insight into recent research and the future direction of this technology Brings researchers and engineers up to date with the latest developments in specialty fluoropolymers, to assist in future materials research and part design Includes detailed assessment of the advantages and shortcomings of specialty fluorinated polymers, for ease of comparison with alternative materials
