Book excerpt: The problem of storing hydrogen safely and effectively is one of the major technological barriers currently preventing the widespread adoption of hydrogen as an energy carrier and the subsequent transition to a so-called hydrogen economy. Practical issues with the storage of hydrogen in both gas and liquid form appear to make reversible solid state hydrogen storage the most promising potential solution. Hydrogen Storage Materials addresses the characterisation of the hydrogen storage properties of the materials that are currently being considered for this purpose. The background to the topic is introduced, along with the various types of materials that are currently under investigation, including nanostructured interstitial and complex hydrides, and porous materials, such as metal-organic frameworks and microporous organic polymers. The main features of Hydrogen Storage Materials include: an overview of the different types of hydrogen storage materials and the properties that are of interest for their practical use; descriptions of the gas sorption measurement methods used to determine these properties, and the complementary techniques that can be used to help corroborate hydrogen uptake data; and extensive coverage of the practical considerations for accurate hydrogen sorption measurement that drive both instrument design and the development of experimental methodology. Hydrogen Storage Materials provides an up-to-date overview of the topic for experienced researchers, while including enough introductory material to serve as a useful, practical introduction for newcomers to the field.

However, its potential is limited by storage problems, especially for mobile applications. Current technologies, as compressed gas or liquefied hydrogen, comprise severe disadvantages and the storage of hydrogen in lightweight solids could be the solution to this problem. Since the optimal storage mechanism and optimal material have yet to be identified, this first handbook on the topic provides an excellent overview of the most probable candidates, highlighting both their advantages as well as drawbacks. From the contents: ¿ Physisorption ¿ Clathrates ¿ Metal hydrides ¿ Complex hydrides ¿ Amides, imides, and mixtures ¿ Tailoring Reaction Enthalpies ¿ Borazan ¿ Aluminum hydride ¿ Nanoparticles A one-stop reference on all questions concerning hydrogen storage for physical and solid state chemists, materials scientists, chemical engineers, and physicists.

Book excerpt: Hydrogen storage technologies are gaining interest for the development of new sustainable energy carriers instead of fossil fuel and for reducing the release of greenhouse gases. Solid state hydrogen storage in hydrides offers a good alternative for an efficient storage. In particular for mobile applications, a high gravimetric and volumetric storage capacity is necessary. These requirements have triggered a lot of interest for complex hydrides (metal alanates M(AlH4)x or borohydrides M(BH4)x). Here, reactive ball milling under hydrogen pressure has been developed for the synthesis of complex hydrides from their decomposition products. Two different kind of complex hydrides were selected: NaAlH4 as a model system and Ca(BH4)2 for its high hydrogen capacity. Sodium alanate NaAlH4 can store practically ca. 4wt% of hydrogen in the 100-150°C temperature range but this can be achieved only when adding a dopant to NaAlH4. In this work, different metal and metal chloride dopants for NaAlH4 are studied. The comparison of these dopants is used to better understand the catalytic and reaction mechanisms. Nevertheless, despite its good reversibility, NaAlH4 cannot be considered for mobile application because of its limited hydrogen capacity. Therefore, metal borohydrides have been considered more recently due to their high gravimetric and volumetric stored hydrogen densities. Among them, Ca(BH4)2 (11.5wt% H2) is interesting because of the predicted suitable thermodynamic properties. A new synthesis route has been investigated, using reactive ball milling of CaH2 and CaB6 under high hydrogen pressure (max 150 bar). The reversible decomposition/formation of Ca(BH4)2 was observed (60% yield) during cycling and was obtained using TiF3 as additive but cannot be achieved with TiCl3 as additive. The understanding of the difference observed when using these two additives is of crucial importance to further improve the kinetics of H2 sorption and the use of Ca(BH4)2 for hydrogen storage.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The impetus of this research was the synthesis and characterization of new Mg-based hydrogen storage materials. Synthetic methods included metal fluxes, distillations and traditional stoichiometric melts. Pure Mg or Mg-X (X=element other than Mg) eutectic fluxes were useful in synthesizing intermetallic single crystals. Distillations of Mg containing materials were used to modify the structure and properties of a material and to grow large dendrites of nearly pure Mg crystals. Synthesized materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and thermogravimetric methods. Analyses for magnetic, transport and hydrogen storage properties were conducted. To address the need for a method of screening newly synthesized products for hydrogen storage properties, a Sievert's-type volumetric system was built to activate and hydrogenate samples. The computer controlled system can hydrogenate samples at 0-2500 PSIG and 25-700 °C while collecting temperature and pressure data at 0.5 second intervals. Automatic absorption and desorption programs were also designed in LabView to allow for volumetric measurements. Samples activated and hydrogenated in the system could also be analyzed for subsequent desorption in a TGA. Stoichiometric melts of Mg-Ca-Si led to the formation of composites containing the controversial phase, Ca2Mg3Si; these were analyzed for phase composition and dehydrogenation properties.

Book excerpt: The move away from a petroleum based economy requires new materials to facilitate the move to alternative fuel sources. Safe methods of storing hydrogen gas are needed, as well as the ability to sequester carbon dioxide and other waste gases. Production of biofuels from plant materials requires efficient catalysts. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a promising class of compounds for these applications because they offer a combination of high porosity, structural integrity, and functional flexibility. The usefulness of MOFs for hydrogen gas storage and catalysis can be improved by adding active metal sites. There are two ways this can be accomplished. Firstly, one can select an organic linker with orthogonal binding affinities, meaning the affinities of the structural and functional sites are significantly different to allow the synthesis of compounds with one structural metal that defines the framework and a different metal that provides the functionality. Secondly, one can post-synthetically modify a previously synthesized MOF to add functionality that could not be incorporated into the structure during the initial synthesis. Herein, this thesis describes research into the synthesis of several MOF compounds. First, three structurally distinct cadmium linked, zinc functionalized tetrakis(carboxyphenyl)porphine compounds are synthesized and characterized. Second, metallation of an amine-containing MOF (IRMOF-3) by organolithium deprotonation followed by metal replacement is discussed.
