Book excerpt: Excerpt from Synopsis of the Proceedings of the Department of Massachusetts Woman's Relief Corps, Auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic: From Its Institution in 1879, Until the Close of the Year 1886; First to Seventh Department Conventions To Massachusetts must ever be accorded the credit of having first conceived, and carried into successful operation, a State organization composed entirely of women, ritualistic in form, and having an almost perfect system of Reports and Returns similar to that of the Grand Army of the Republic and its object the relief of sick or disabled veterans of the Union Army and their dependent families. To have assisted in laying the corner stone of the present grand structure, known the world over as the only auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic, will, I know, prove a lasting satisfaction to every one of its pioneers, and I trust this brief history will bring to many the happiness it has afforded me, of living over once again those days of anxiety and discouragements, but now so gloriously crowned by success and achievements worthy the highest endeavors of woman. We have sought to make this history as concise and yet correct as possible, and hope it may be a welcome guest with every member of the Woman's Relief Corps. Loyally and Fraternally yours, sarah E. Book Synopsis Women and Patriotism in Jim Crow America by : Francesca Morgan

This book was released on 2006-05-18 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Civil War, many Americans did not identify strongly with the concept of a united nation. Francesca Morgan finds the first stirrings of a sense of national patriotism--of "these United States--in the work of black and white clubwomen in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Morgan demonstrates that hundreds of thousands of women in groups such as the Woman's Relief Corps, the National Association of Colored Women, the Universal Negro Improvement Association, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Daughters of the American Revolution sought to produce patriotism on a massive scale in the absence of any national emergency. They created holidays like Confederate Memorial Day, placed American flags in classrooms, funded monuments and historic markers, and preserved old buildings and battlegrounds. Morgan argues that while clubwomen asserted women's importance in cultivating national identity and participating in public life, white groups and black groups did not have the same nation in mind and circumscribed their efforts within the racial boundaries of their time. Presenting a truly national history of these generally understudied groups, Morgan proves that before the government began to show signs of leadership in patriotic projects in the 1930s, women's organizations were the first articulators of American nationalism.

Book Synopsis Daughters of the Union by : Nina Silber
Download or read book Daughters of the Union written by Nina Silber and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2011-03-18 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daughters of the Union casts a spotlight on some of the most overlooked and least understood participants in the American Civil War: the women of the North. Unlike their Confederate counterparts, who were often caught in the midst of the conflict, most Northern women remained far from the dangers of battle. Nonetheless, they enlisted in the Union cause on their home ground, and the experience transformed their lives. Nina Silber traces the emergence of a new sense of self and citizenship among the women left behind by Union soldiers. She offers a complex account, bolstered by women's own words from diaries and letters, of the changes in activity and attitude wrought by the war. Women became wage-earners, participants in partisan politics, and active contributors to the war effort. But even as their political and civic identities expanded, they were expected to subordinate themselves to male-dominated government and military bureaucracies. Silber's arresting tale fills an important gap in women's history. She shows the women of the North--many for the first time--discovering their patriotism as well as their ability to confront new economic and political challenges, even as they encountered the obstacles of wartime rule. The Civil War required many women to act with greater independence in running their households and in expressing their political views. It brought women more firmly into the civic sphere and ultimately gave them new public roles, which would prove crucial starting points for the late-nineteenth-century feminist struggle for social and political equality.
