Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalogue of the Fishes Known to Inhabit the Waters of North America, North of the Tropic of Cancer: With Notes on the Species Discovered in 1883 and 1884 The Synopsis of the Fishes of North America, by David S. Jordan and Charles H. Gilbert (bulletin United Sf tes National Museum N o. 16) was finished in September, 1882, and was issued to the public about April 1, 1883. Since the publication of that work an active study of North Ameri can fishes has brought to light many species not included in the Synop sis, and has shown various errors in the nomenclature of species already known. The additions are chiefly in the Bassalian or deep-sea fauna of the Atlantic, in the tropical fauna of the Florida Keys, and in the fresh-water fauna of the lower part of the Mississippi Valley. It was at first determined to issue these addenda in the form of ah nual supplements to the Synopsis, but the publication of the supplement for 1883 having been delayed till January, 1885, it has been thought best to unite the lists for 1883 and 1884, and to put the matter in the present form. I have, therefore, given a list representing the present state of our knowledge of the fishes found north of the Tropic of Cancer, in American waters. In all cases where a species is included which is not in the Synopsis, or in which a name is used in the latter work, different from that here adopted, I have given an explanation, reference or description in the form of a foot-note. Species already fully described elsewhere in publications of the U. S. National Museum are not redescribed here. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Fishes: A Popular Treatise Upon the Game and Food Fishes of North America, With Especial Reference to Habits and Methods of Capture The work was the summary of the observations and reports Of a large corps of experts in ichthyology as well as fisheries and economics, originally employed by the Census Bureau. It contained a fund of information that could not be found in any other work accessible to the general public, and it still holds that place. Nevertheless, in the lapse of time, many changes had been made in the nomenclature of the species, not a few Species had been added, and several important groups of fishes that had been neglected required attention. The data in the work related to two independent subjects: one, the life history or habits of the Species; the other, the statistics of the fisheries. The former has not changed, and what was true fifteen years ago is still true the latter is constantly changing, but the relative values of the differ ent fisheries have not greatly varied. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautiful and definitive guide brings together the world's lead leading expert on North American trout and salmon, Robert Behnke, and the foremost illustrator in the field, Joseph Tomelleri. North America is graced with the greatest diversity of trout and salmon on earth. From tiny brook trout in mountain streams of the Northeast, to cutthroat trout in the rivers of the Rockies, to Chinook salmon of the Pacific, the continent is home to more than 70 types of trout and salmon. How this came to be, how they are related, and what makes them unique -- and so breathtaking -- is the story of Trout and Salmon of North America. The more than 100 illustrations of trout and salmon by Joseph Tomelleri showcased here exhibit a genius for detail, coloration, and proportion. Each portrait is made from field notes, streamside observations, photographs, and specimens collected by the artist. The result is a set of the most accurate and stunning illustrations of fish ever created. Robert Behnke has distilled 50 years of his research and writing about trout and salmon in completing this book. No one understands better than Behnke the diversity and conservation issues concerning these fishes or communicates so lucidly the biological wonders and complexities of their particular beauty. Also included are more than 40 richly detailed maps that clearly show the ranges of populations of trout and salmon throughout North America. An irresistible delight for anyone who appreciates natural history, Trout and Salmon of North America is a master guide to the natural elegance of our native fishes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Fishes These two movements may be made antagonistic by poor teaching. The book knowledge, containing as it does the precious lesson of human experience, may be so taught as to bring with it only dead rules of conduct, only dead, scraps of information, and no stimulant to original thinking. Its contents may be memorized without being understood. On the other hand, the self-activity of the child may be stimulated at the expense of his social well-being - his Originality may be cultivated at the expense of his rationality. If he is taught persistently to have his own way, to trust only his own senses. To cling to his own Opinions heedless of the experience of his fellows, he is pre paring for an unsuccessful, misanthropic career, and is likely enough to end his life in a madhouse. It is admitted that a too exclusive study of the knowledge found in books, the knowledge which is aggregated from the experience and thought of other people, may result in loading the mind of the pupil with material which he can not use to advantage.
