Download or read book Oxidation of Amino Acids, Peptides, and Proteins written by Virender K. Sharma and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explains the role of reactive intermediates in biological systems as well as in environmental remediation With its clear and systematic approach, this book examined the broad range of reactive intermediate that can be generated in biological environments, detailing the fundamental properties of each reactive intermediate. Readers gain a contemporary understanding of how these intermediates react with different compounds, with an emphasis on amino acids, peptides, and proteins. The author not only sets forth the basic chemistry and nature of reactive intermediates, he also demonstrates how the properties of the intermediates presented in the book compare with each other. Oxidation of Amino Acids, Peptides, and Proteins begins with a discussion of radical and non-radical reactive species as well as an exploration of the significance of reactive species in the atmosphere, disinfection processes, and environmental remediation. Next, the book covers such topics as: Thermodynamics of amino acids and reactive species and the effect of metal-ligand binding in oxidation chemistry Kinetics and mechanisms of reactive halogen, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, sulfur and phosphate species as well as reactive high-valent Cr, Mn, and Fe species Reactivity of the species with molecules of biological and environmental importance Generation of reactive species in the laboratory for kinetics studies Oxidation of amino acids, peptides, and proteins by permanganate, ferryl, and ferrate species Application of reactive species in purifying water and treating wastewater With this book as their guide, readers will be able to assess the overall effects of reactive intermediates in biological environments. Moreover, they’ll learn how to apply this knowledge for successful water purification and wastewater treatment.
Book Synopsis Proceedings of the 15th International Symposium on Bioluminescence and Chemiluminescence by : Xun Shen
Download or read book Proceedings of the 15th International Symposium on Bioluminescence and Chemiluminescence written by Xun Shen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2009 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade, great advances have been made in fundamental research and in the applications of bioluminescence and chemiluminescence. These techniques have become vital tools for laboratory analysis. Bioluminescence imaging has emerged as a powerful new optical imaging technique, offering real-time monitoring of spatial and temporal progression of biological processes in living animals. Bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) methodology has also emerged as a powerful technique for the study of protein-protein interactions. Luciferase reporter gene technology facilitates monitoring of gene expression and is used to probe molecular mechanisms in the regulation of gene expression. Chemiluminescence detection and analysis have also found diverse applications in life science research; for example, chemiluminescent labels and substrates are now widely used in immunoassay and nucleic acid probe-based assays. The latest advances in this exciting field, from fundamental research to cutting-edge applications, are explored in this most recent volume of the biannual symposium series, the Proceedings of the 15th International Symposium on Bioluminescence and Chemiluminescence. The volume highlights advances in fundamental knowledge of luciferase-based bioluminescence, photoprotein-based bioluminescence, fundamental aspects and applications of chemiluminescence, luminescence imaging, fluorescence quantum dots and other inorganic fluorescent materials, phosphorescence and ultraweak luminescence, and instrumentation for measurement and imaging of luminescence.

Book Synopsis Experiences in Biochemical Perception by : L Ornston
Download or read book Experiences in Biochemical Perception written by L Ornston and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiences in Biochemical Perception discusses the breadth of contributions of I. C. Gunsalus, a versatile biochemist, in the field of biochemistry. This book explores the mechanism of electron transport to protein structure and documents the interface between the Gunsalus laboratory and the physicists. Organized into five parts encompassing 27 chapters, this book starts with a description of metabolic processes and the study of pyruvate oxidation. This text then illustrates how studies of microbial respiration led to the discovery of pyridoxl phosphate. Other chapters review dehydrogenases that participate in the dissimilation of branch-chain aromatic acids. This book further discusses the phosphorus–nitrogen bond in phosphorylated proteins and the inactivation of glutamine synthetase. The final chapter describes the elucidation of the function of the coenzyme biotin and generalizes about the use of bacteria in nutritional studies. This book is a valuable resource for readers and researchers engaged in the study of genetics, enzymology, microbiology, chemistry, and spectroscopy.
Book Synopsis What is What in the Nanoworld by : Victor E. Borisenko
Download or read book What is What in the Nanoworld written by Victor E. Borisenko and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-02-21 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third, partly revised and enlarged edition of this introductory reference summarizes the terms and definitions, most important phenomena, and regulations occurring in the physics, chemistry, technology, and application of nanostructures. A representative collection of fundamental terms and definitions from quantum physics and chemistry, special mathematics, organic and inorganic chemistry, solid state physics, material science and technology accompanies recommended secondary sources for an extended study of any given subject. Each of the more than 2,200 entries, from a few sentences to a page in length, interprets the term or definition in question and briefly presents the main features of the phenomena behind it. Additional information in the form of notes ("First described in", "Recognition", "More details in") supplements the entries and gives a historical perspective of the subject with reference to further sources. Ideal for answering questions related to unknown terms and definitions among undergraduate and PhD students studying the physics of low-dimensional structures, nanoelectronics, and nanotechnology.
Book Synopsis Autoxidation in Food and Biological Systems by : M.G. Simic
Download or read book Autoxidation in Food and Biological Systems written by M.G. Simic and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The material presented in this book deals with basic mechanisms of free radical reactions in autoxidation processes and anitoxidant suppression of autoxidation of foods, biochemical models and biologi cal systems. Autoxidation in foods and corresponding biological effects are usually approached separately although recent mechanistic developments in the biochemistry and free radical chemistry of per oxides and their precursors tend to bring these two fields closer. Apparent ability of antioxidants in diets to reduce the inci dence of cancer has resulted in scrutiny of autoxidized products and their precursors as possibly toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic agents. Mechanisms of any of these effects have been barely ad dressed. Yet we know now that free radicals, as esoteric as they were only a few decades ago, are being discovered in foods, biochem ical and biological systems and do play a role in the above-mentioned causalities. The purpose of the Workshop and the resulting book was to give a unifying approach towards study of beneficial and deleterious effects of autoxidation, based on rigorous scientific considerations. It is our hope that the material presented in this book will not only provide a review of the "state of the art" of autoxidation and anti oxidants, but also reflect the interaction which occurred during the Workshop between workers using model sytems, and food and biological systems.
