Book excerpt: It’s so far beyond “just one of those days” that Amanda McIntyre can’t think of a single thing that’s going right. The banking industry is toast, her career in tatters, her girlfriend is up to her ears in someone else and New York City has frazzled Amanda’s last nerve. It’s not hard for her best buddy Malcolm to persuade her to take time out on a trip to his Australian home. Malcolm’s sister Clancy is waiting at the airport and Amanda can’t see the silver lining around this particular dark cloud. Clancy seems to blame the pampered banker princess from the States for the near-collapse of the family business. She’ll tolerate the visitor, but only just. Amanda wants to run for home, yet one week becomes two...becomes four... Diana Simmonds is the author of Forty Love and Heart on Fire, and returns to lesbian romance with this irreverent tale of looking for—and finding—the dark cloud’s silver lining.

Download or read book Feminista written by Erica Kennedy and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sydney Zamora is fiercely independent, aggressively opinionated, and utterly self-made. She's reshaped her body (into the perfect sample-sale outfitted size 6, thank you very much), organized a life for herself as a celebrity journalist at hot magazine Cachet, and strides through the canyons of New York City like she owns them. There's just one problem: Sydney is so strong that she plays keep-away with men. But now that she's hitting her midthirties, she wants one. Badly. For her birthday, Sydney's sister ambushes her with the services of Mitzi Berman, $40,000 a shot Manhattan matchmaker extraordinaire. Mitzi also has her eyes on Max Cooper, the scion of Harvey's department store, the chicest place to shop in America. And nothing could make either Sydney or Max Cooper run faster than Mitzi, with her rules and her Brooklyn accent—that is, if they didn't concede her a point or two. Peopled with vivid, hilarious characters, Feminista is fast-moving fiction whose themes of independence, image and the com pli - cated relationship between the sexes in the working world recall the best of Rona Jaffe.

Download or read book Security and Privacy - Silver Linings in the Cloud written by Kai Rannenberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-08-07 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings contain the papers of IFIP/SEC 2010. It was a special honour and privilege to chair the Program Committee and prepare the proceedings for this conf- ence, which is the 25th in a series of well-established international conferences on security and privacy organized annually by Technical Committee 11 (TC-11) of IFIP. Moreover, in 2010 it is part of the IFIP World Computer Congress 2010 celebrating both the Golden Jubilee of IFIP (founded in 1960) and the Silver Jubilee of the SEC conference in the exciting city of Brisbane, Australia, during September 20–23. The call for papers went out with the challenging motto of “Security & Privacy Silver Linings in the Cloud” building a bridge between the long standing issues of security and privacy and the most recent developments in information and commu- cation technology. It attracted 102 submissions. All of them were evaluated on the basis of their significance, novelty, and technical quality by at least five member of the Program Committee. The Program Committee meeting was held electronically over a period of a week. Of the papers submitted, 25 were selected for presentation at the conference; the acceptance rate was therefore as low as 24. 5% making SEC 2010 a highly competitive forum. One of those 25 submissions could unfortunately not be included in the proceedings, as none of its authors registered in time to present the paper at the conference.

Book excerpt: “In this, her third novel, Kim Izzo renders the last voyage of the Lusitania in such terrifyingly accurate detail that we readers cannot help but feel we too are aboard that doomed ship—and in Winston Churchill’s ultra-secret lair, Room 40—as the ineluctable forces of history converge.” — Erik Larson, bestselling author of The Splendid and the Vile For readers of Kate Williams, Beatriz Williams and Jennifer Robson, a captivating novel of love and resilience during the Great War, inspired by the author’s family history. As the First World War rages in continental Europe, two New York heiresses, Sydney and Brooke Sinclair, are due to set sail for England. Brooke is engaged to marry impoverished aristocrat Edward Thorpe-Tracey, the future Lord Northbrook, in the wedding of the social calendar. Undaunted, Sydney and Brooke board the Lusitania for the seven-day voyage with Edward, not knowing that disaster lies ahead. While she begins as a secretary, it isn’t long before her skills in codes and cyphers are called on, and she learns a devastating truth and the true cost of war. As the days of the voyage pass, these four lives collide in a struggle for survival as the Lusitania meets its deadly fate.
Book Synopsis The Containment of Soccer in Australia by : Christopher J. Hallinan
Download or read book The Containment of Soccer in Australia written by Christopher J. Hallinan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, outdoor soccer was the second most popular organized sport for Australian children after swimming. It far outstripped the popularity of the three other football codes that are played in Australia – rugby league, rugby union and Australian Rules football. Yet the soccer participation phenomenon in Australia is matched neither by the media coverage of the game in these countries, nor by the academic interest in the game. With a few notable exceptions in academic sports history, the game of soccer remains understudied in comparison with the other football codes. And, apart from some interest that is generated by World Cup campaigns, the media coverage of soccer is largely marginalized, and becomes most emphasized when reporting on aspects of ‘hooligan’ crowd behaviour. This book investigates some of the ways that soccer has been maintained as marginal to Australian identity, and why the sport remains vitally important to some marginalized groups within these communities. This book was previously published as a special issue of Sport in Society.
