Book excerpt: How do we take stock of the state and direction of the world’s environment, and what can we learn from the experience? Among the myriad detailed narratives about the condition of the planet, the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) reports—issued by the United Nations Environment Programme—stand out as the most ambitious. For nearly three decades the GEO project has not only delivered iconic global assessment reports, but through its multitude of contributors has inspired hundreds of similar processes worldwide from the regional to the local level. This book provides an inside account of the evolution of the GEO project from its earliest days. Building on meticulous research, including interviews with former heads of the United Nations Environment Programme, diplomats, leading contributing scientists, and senior leaders of collaborating organizations, the story is told from the perspective of five GEO veterans who all played a pivotal role in shaping the periodic assessments. The GEO’s history provides striking insights and will save valuable time to those who commission, design and conduct, as well as critique and improve, assessments of environmental development in the next decade.

Book excerpt: Measurements, Indicators, and Research Methods for Sustainability presents a thorough and accessible overview of the ways in which sustainability is charted worldwide. Some articles introduce basic concepts, such as quantitative versus qualitative data or the weak versus strong sustainability debate; others examine how indicators in specific areas (climate change and soil conservation, agriculture, and mining) have been applied (or not) to different regions. Research analysts explain the modes and media through which these measurements are broadcast, stressing the importance of developing methods that can be understood by both experts and ordinary citizens. They also examine the process of monitoring, itself a controversial topic affecting national or international policy, law, rules, and regulations.

Book excerpt: Strategic Sustainability examines how organizations can implement environmental sustainability science, theories, and ways of thinking to become more competitive. Including examples and ideas implemented in various countries, it is based on known scientific principles about the natural world and organizational principles focusing on the work domain. The intersection of these two realms of research creates a powerful and new approach to comprehensive, seemingly contradictory issues. Daniel S. Fogel draws from disparate fields and creates a story about organizations, their future and how people are part of the problem and, more importantly, part of the solution. Readers will find ways to take action to improve organizations and avoid denigrating our natural environment, learning to be mindful of the urgency we should feel to improve our impact on the world. The focus on the natural environment provides a powerful focus for creating value in organizations and addressing the major challenges we all face. Advanced sustainability students, working professionals and board members, managers and legislators responsible for governing organizations or implementing public policy will find this book useful. A companion website features an instructor’s manual with test questions, as well as 38, 10-minute videos for classroom use.

Book excerpt: In 2003, UN Secretary-General Annan appealed to the international community to reform the United Nations system. A high-level panel was established to elaborate proposals, which shall be presented to the General Assembly in 2005. In this context, French President Chirac called for establishing a new United Nations Environment Organization (UNEO), to evolve from the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). France set up a working group on this issue, consisting of 26 countries and the EU Commission, and including both supporters and critics of the initiative. The aim is to work out a concept for a UNEO by 2005. In parallel, continued efforts are made to strengthen UNEP. Reform aims at enhancing its financial basis, expanding the membership of the UNEP Governing Council to all UN Member States and increasing the activities in the fields of science and capacity building. The present volume, which consists of a series of contributions by internationally renounced authors, analyzes gaps and weaknesses of the present system of global environmental governance, and highlights the various aspects, challenges and necessities, of a political and scientific nature alike, of both reforming UNEP and creating a new environment organization in context of the major United Nations reform effort.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Berlin, course: Marketing, language: English, abstract: Due to strong competition and a continuous market change, most companies engage in strategic planning today to become or stay competitive in the long run. Strategy is all-embracing. Strategy has to capture internal and external aspects, that means to comprise competencies and market opportunities. Strategy has to keep in view the own company, the customers and the competitors. The challenge is to create customer values and competitive advantages to assure benefits and growth. As a result, the starting point of every strategic decision demonstrates the recognition and the analysis of the company’s current situation containing a high variety of parameters. These parameters are generally defined by the company’s influence into internal and external parameters. However, the understanding of the company’s situation is only defined in absolute by analysing parameters and its bilateral dependencies. Therefore, the combination of the company’s internal factors and the external environmental circumstances presents the basis for the strategy development and the resulting organisational marketing goals and application of the marketing instruments. The SWOT analysis is a strategic planning tool used to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats of a company. It provides information that is helpful in matching the company’s resources and capabilities to the competitive environment in which it operates. The resulting SWOT matrix contrasts the results of the internal analysis (strengths and weakness) and the external analysis (opportunities and threats) to define strategic fields of action. That application of a SWOT analysis is therefore instrumental in strategy formulation and selection.

Book excerpt: The principle of public participation in policy-making and policy implementation features in many European Union directives and policy documents. It is also undeniably connected to the rise of what can be called the European e-society, in which digital technologies are expected to strengthen public involvement in democratic processes. One broad group of such technologies are commonly referred to as geo-visualisations. This book contains the results of a European project that explored the potential for using innovative geo-visualisation techniques in public participation processes for spatial planning. The approach taken in the project involved continual interaction between concept development, the technological possibilities, and their practical application in case studies conducted in Belgium, Poland, Portugal, Spain and the Netherlands. The structure of the book mirrors this procedure. Three chapters discuss the general concepts of spatial planning and participation, e-interaction, and innovation in organisations. Two chapters present the results of research into the communicative potential and the usability of 3-dimensional geo-visualisations. The translation of these concepts and findings into practice is reported in five chapters devoted to the case studies. The project generated greater understanding of the ways in which geo-visualisation can help to improve public participation in the process of finding solutions to spatial planning issues. This book and accompanying DVD with extra information, is therefore a valuable resource for professionals and practitioners already working with geo-visualisations in participatory spatial planning as well as those looking to do so. They can turn to this book for insights and inspiration.
