Book excerpt: This book concerns two major topics, smart antenna systems and wireless local-area-networks (LANs). For smart antenna systems, it d- cusses the mechanics behind a smart antenna system, the setup of a smart antenna experimental testbed, and experimental and computer simulation results of various issues relating to smart antenna systems. For wireless LAN systems, it discusses the IEEE 802.11 worldwide wi- less LAN standard, the operation of a wireless LAN system, and some of the technical considerations that must be overcome by a wireless LAN system designer. These two topics are combined in the discussion of the Smart Wireless LAN (SWL) system, which was designed to achieve the benefits which smart antenna systems can provide for wireless LAN systems while still remaining compatible with the 802.11 wireless LAN standard. The design of SWL calls for the replacement of the conv- tional wireless LAN base station (which are called access points in the 802.11 documentation) with an SWL base station, while leaving the - dividual terminal operation as unchanged as possible.

Book excerpt: As the growing demand for mobile communications is constantly increasing, the need for better coverage, improved capacity, and higher transmission quality rises. Thus, a more efficient use of the radio spectrum is required. Smart antenna systems are capable of efficiently utilizing the radio spectrum and is a promise for an effective solution to the present wireless systems' problems while achieving reliable and robust high-speed high-data-rate transmission. The purpose of this book is to provide the reader a broad view of the system aspects of smart antennas. In fact, smart antenna systems comprise several critical areas such as individual antenna array design, signal processing algorithms, space-time processing, wireless channel modeling and coding, and network performance. In this book we include an overview of smart antenna concepts, introduce some of the areas that impact smart antennas, and examine the influence of interaction and integration of these areas to Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks. In addition, the general principles and major benefits of using space-time processing are introduced, especially employing multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques.

In wireless communication systems, multipath fading, delay and interference occurred by reflection or diffraction. In a high-speed wireless communication, it becomes a necessity to separate desired signal from delay or interference signal. Thus to overcome these problems Smart antenna systems have been developed. Smart antennas employ a set of the radiating elements that are combined to form a movable or switchable beam pattern that follows the desired user. The arrays by themselves are not smart, it is the digital signal processing that makes them smart. The process of combining the signals and then focusing the radiation in a particular direction is often referred to as digital beam forming. Smart antennas are most often realized with either switched-beam or fully adaptive array antennas. A smart antenna system consists of an antenna array, associated RF hardware, and a computer controller that changes the array pattern in response to the radio frequency environment, in order to improve the performance of a communication or radar system. In the switched beam system there is the beam forming network which w

Book excerpt: The book addresses the current demand for a scientific approach to advanced wireless technology and its future developments. It gives a clear presentation of both antennas and adaptive signal processing which is what makes antennas powerful, maneuverable and necessary for advanced wireless technology. The book presents electromagnetic signal processing techniques that both control the antenna beam and track the moving station, which is required for effective, fast, dynamic beamforming. The first part of the book presents a comprehensive description and analysis of basic antenna theory, starting from short dipole antennas to array antennas. This section also includes important concepts related to antenna parameters, electromagnetic wave propagation, the Friis equation, the radar equation and wave reflection and transmission through media. The second part of the book focuses on smart antennas, commencing from a look at the traditional approach to beamforming before getting into the details of smart antennas. Complete derivation and description of the techniques for electromagnetic field signal processing techniques for adaptive beamforming are also presented. Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven beamforming is presented using computationally fast and low-memory demanding technique for AI beamforming is presented with the different excitation functions available. A novel method for fast, low memory and accurate, maneuverable single beam generation is presented, as well as other methods for beamforming with fewer elements along with a simple method for tracking the mobile antenna and station. In this section, for completeness, the use of antenna signal processing for synthetic aperture techniques for imaging is also presented, specifically the Inverse Synthetic Aperture Imaging technique. The third part of the book presents technological aspects of advanced wireless technology, including the 5G wireless system and the various devices needed to construct it. While the books’ main emphasis is theoretical understanding and design, it includes applications, and legal matters are also presented.

This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless LANs are networks that are typically set up to provide data connectivity to an access point for a set of user nodes. In such localized networks, since all nodes have "equal" right to the bandwidth resources of the access point, the nodes compete for the common wireless medium in a distributed manner. Wireless ad hoc networks are extensions of wireless LANs such that nodes connect without the intervention of an access point. It is well known that such networks employ omnidirectional antennas at nodes and access points, adversely affecting throughput performance. In ad hoc networks, poor single hop performance results in poor multihop throughput, especially if some nodes are path "bottlenecks". In this work, we study and evaluate the performance improvement in wireless LANs and ad hoc networks with multiple-beam smart antennas. Our work examines a variety of issues that arise with the deployment of smart antennas at nodes, at different layers of the protocol stack, especially those related to medium access control, PHY-MAC interaction, scheduling, mulithop performance, and analytical bounds on achievable throughput. We propose schemes for medium access control with spatial multiplexing based on Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA), to maximize one-hop throughput in wireless LANs and ad hoc networks. We develop an analytical model for the throughput in such networks for two different protocols, CSMA and Slotted Aloha, wherein nodes are equipped with smart antennas. Our model gives us insight into the choice of a medium access protocol based on the ambient traffic conditions, since we can predict the behavior of the protocol under different values of offered load. We also attempt to modify the basic protocols for improved performance with smart antennas. In addition, we examine the different types of smart antenna techniques that may be used at nodes of a mobile ad hoc network and study their relative merits and demerits. Further, we explore how efficient scheduling may be carried out in an ad hoc network where nodes are equipped with smart antennas, for which we study different heuristics. Finally, we perform multihop network simulation to evaluate the performance of multiple beam smart antennas at nodes in a distributed ad hoc network. Our analytical and simulation results are encouraging, and show that we can obtain drastic performance improvements in one-hop throughput with the use of smart antennas and suitably designed medium access protocols. Also, bottlenecks in congested areas (heavily loaded single hop) in multihop ad hoc networks may be cleared with such antennas. This provides tremendous improvement in the aggregate network throughput. In summary, our research on protocol design and throughput evaluation provides sufficient evidence for considering the deployment of smart antenna access points or nodes in wireless LANs and ad hoc networks.
