Download or read book New Voices, New Visions written by Catriona Elder and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Voices, New Visions brings together a collection of papers that engage with the ideas of nation, identity and place. The title New Voices, New Visions harks back to earlier scholarship that endeavoured to explore these issues. It therefore makes links between old and new stories of Australian identity, tracing the continuities, shifts and changes in how Australia is imagined. The collection is deliberately interdisciplinary, gathering work by historians, literary and film scholars, communication and cultural theorists, political scientists and sociologists. This mixed perspectives enables the reader to trace ideas, concepts and theories across a range of disciplines and understand the distinctive ways in which different disciplines engage with ideas of nation, space and Australian identity. The book is written in an engaging and accessible manner, making it an excellent text for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the fields of Australian Studies. It will be especially useful for the growing number of students living outside Australia who engage with Australian literature and culture. The book provides a range of topics that introduces students to key issues and concepts. It also situates these ideas in historical context. New Voices, New Visions engages with key contemporary issues in everyday Australian life: environment and climate change, immigration, consumerism, travel and cities. It explores these various topics by considering case studies, both contemporary and historical. For example the issue of attitudes to Asia are analysed through art; the topic of national symbols through the case of the crocodile; approaches to immigration via a popular reality television programme. The contributors to this book comprise some of the foremost Australian scholars as well as emerging scholars. This combination ensures a depth of knowledge but also a vibrancy. The editors are experienced scholars whose knowledge of the field is broad and they have brought a coherence to the material ensuring a strong narrative for the reader.
Download or read book ghostgirl written by Tonya Hurley and published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. This book was released on 2008-08-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. And if I should die before I awake, I pray the popular attend my wake. Charlotte Usher feels practically invisible at school, and then one day she really is invisible. Even worse: she's dead. And all because she choked on a gummy bear. But being dead doesn't stop Charlotte from wanting to be popular; it just makes her more creative about achieving her goal. If you thought high school was a matter of life or death, wait till you see just how true that is. In this satirical, yet heartfelt novel, Hurley explores the invisibility we all feel at some times and the lengths we'll go to be seen. Praise for ghostgirl: * Polished dark-and-deadpan humor, it's a natural fit with Gen Y, too." --Publishers Weekly (starred review) * "[Tonya] beats out witty teen-speak like a punk-band drummer, keeping the narrative fast-paced and fun yet thought-provokingly heartwarming. Goofy, ghastly, intelligent, electrifying." --Kirkus (starred review) *"Tim Burton and Edgar Allan Poe devotees will die for this fantastic, phantasmal read." --School Library Journal (starred review) * "Readers with a taste for black humor and satire will feast on Hurley's crisp, wise dialogue. Anticipate a well deserved cult following." --VOYA (starred review) "Written with deadpan wit...this is a 'Wonderful Life'-like tale." -New York Post "A sincere (and humorous) exploration of how we all feel invisible at one time or another...perfect read." -CosmoGirl

Book Synopsis Orthodox Christian Material Culture by : Timothy Carroll
Download or read book Orthodox Christian Material Culture written by Timothy Carroll and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although much has been written on the making of art objects as a means of engaging in creative productions of the self (most famously Alfred Gell’s work), there has been very little written on Orthodox Christianity and its use of material within religious self-formation. Eastern Orthodox Christianity is renowned for its artistry and the aesthetics of its worship being an integral part of devout practice. Yet this is an area with little ethnographic exploration available and even scarcer ethnographic attention given to the material culture of Eastern Christianity outside the traditional ‘homelands’ of the greater Levant and Eastern Europe. Drawing from and building upon Gell’s work, Carroll explores the uses and purposes of material culture in Eastern Orthodox Christian worship. Drawing on three years of ethnographic fieldwork in a small Antiochian Orthodox parish in London, Carroll focusses on a study of ecclesiastical fabric but places this within the wider context of Orthodox material ecology in Britain. This ethnographic exploration leads to discussion of the role of materials in the construction of religious identity, material understandings of religion, and pathways of pilgrimatic engagement and religious movement across Europe. In a religious tradition characterised by repetition and continuity, but also as sensuously tactile, this book argues that material objects are necessary for the continual production of Orthodox Christians as art-like subjects. It is an important contribution to the corpus of literature on the anthropology of material culture and art and the anthropology of religion.

Now in their 50s, they have recently been giving the Ockers a taste of Kiwi, having adventures all over the lucky country and playing golf wherever they go. And, as Anne Barry's highly entertaining collection of true stories shows, there's nothing these two won't try, even if the results can be unexpected, to say the least. Wherever the Barry's go, there is humour and action in spades. This hilarious book will both inspire you and give you the best laugh you've had in ages.

In the cradle of civilization, rocked by the waters of the blue Aegean, lies the tiny, barren island of Kalymnos. It is cloaked in antiquity and rich with the vibrant life of a proud and passionate people who have stubbornly endured the ravages of man and nature for three thousand years. Here is a moving story of this doomed, enchanted island, of a strong man and a strange, haunting woman who lived there, of a tormented girl who fled there, and of a wanderer who came, seeking... It is a story of unique power and simple splendor, a fiction rooted deep in truth. “...stirring...It is an elemental story of the raging sea and the rocky land, of the fundamental urges of man and woman...a story of great beauty and surging excitement...”—Boston Herald “...what they have seen, heard, felt in Kalymnos...make a vivid story, written as modern painters paint, not lingeringly, nor sentimentally, but with great splashes of significant color...”—New York Herald Tribune “...a lyrical and rugged account...of a virile race, almost pure descendants from the men who once sent their war galleys to ancient Troy...”—Springfield Republican “...a powerful and sad, beautifully written tale.”—Newark News “This is stark, brutal fiction based on fact. The dynamic, incisive and beautiful prose is worthy of a Hemingway...”—Grand Rapids Herald “Kalymnos as a place is most effectively presented, with a fine feeling for wind and weather, sea and sky, and a sustained brightness of natural detail. Also, the collective life of the islanders is very convincingly treated, with understanding and concern.”—Chicago Tribune “...superb...It paints murals of truth...”—Saturday Review
